Reds' Elly De La Cruz is returning from mourning his sister's death. Here's what we know

If Elly De La Cruz had his way − and if his flights back to Cincinnati from his native Dominican Republic all cooperated − he might have been in uniform and starting for the Reds' series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
That seemed to be De La Cruz, based on how Reds manager Terry Francona described the situation on Friday. De La Cruz departed Cincinnati post-game Wednesday afternoon to mourn the death of his older sister in the Dominican Republic. Then, De La Cruz began his trek back to Cincinnati, but a flight on his itinerary was cancelled Friday, so he'll arrive back to Cincinnati later, Francona said.

"He'll be here later tonight," Francona told reporters in his office Friday afternoon. "He was actually trying to get here in time for the game but one of his flights got cancelled, so he's getting here later."

Elly De La Cruz was expected to be back with the Reds Friday night without ever having gone on the bereavement list following the death of his older sister. He returned to the Dominican after Wednesday's game. The Reds were off Thursday.
From Francona to De La Cruz's teammates, their position was uniform that De La Cruz should take as much time away from the team as he needed. But it was also noticeable that the words "bereavement list" never entered the public discourse from the Reds's side, nor was an announcement of De La Cruz officially receiving that roster designation made. Additionally, there was no corresponding roster move to indicate De La Cruz was on the bereavement list.

A bereavement list designation would have allowed De La Cruz to be away from the team for three to seven days. Some thought he could miss all or most of the weekend series against the Diamondbacks, which continues Saturday with a scheduled 4:10 p.m. game followed by Sunday's scheduled 1:40 p.m. game to close out the series and the six-game homestand for the Reds.
Francona didn't explicitly indicate whether or not De La Cruz would be available Saturday, but at least the Reds player should be back in Greater Cincinnati.
De La Cruz had the full support of his club and teammates throughout this week as he played the final game of a series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, followed by all three games of this week's series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

D-backs catcher Gabriel Moreno leaves game in the 6th

CINCINNATI (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno left Friday night's game against the Cincinnati Reds after being struck on his right hand by a wild pitch from right-handed reliever Cristian Mena. With the Diamondbacks leading 3-2 in the sixth, Mena's pitch bounced in front of home plate and hit Moreno on his throwing hand. After consulting with the training staff, Moreno made a few throws but couldn't continue. Manager Torey Lovullo said X-rays were negative. 'Taking him out of the game was precautionary, the trainer recommended it after watching him throw the ball' Lovullo said. 'There's substantial swelling in that area. We'll see how he wakes up and feels tomorrow.' Jose Herrera replaced Moreno behind the plate. Moreno was 0 for 2 and looking to extend his seven-game hitting streak. He was batting .281 with four homers and 17 RBIs in 49 games.

UFC 316's Waldo Cortes-Acosta plans Serghei Spivac KO, enter heavyweight title contention

Waldo Cortes-Acosta feels he's on the cusp of title contention, and it's hard to disagree. The Dominican heavyweight has quietly put together an impressive run in the UFC, picking up six wins in the seven fights he's had since joining the promotion. These victories include two knockouts, and several notable names such as Ryan Spann, Robelis Despaigne, Chase Sherman and former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski. Advertisement This Saturday at UFC 316, Cortes-Acosta (13-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) looks to continue to bolster that resume and go on a five-fight winning streak when he takes on top-10 ranked heavyweight Serghei Spivac. He thinks a win over Spivac (17-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) will open up big opportunities for him in the division. "Yeah, I do feel the attention and the importance of the event," Cortes-Acosta told Hablemos MMA in Spanish. "This fight can push me, can catapult me to the top, and put me in the title conversation. Maybe I win this one, one more after that, and I'm ready for a title shot, God willing." Cortes-Acosta has his path to victory mapped out for Spivac. Avoid the ground game and keep the fight in his realm. "I see it as a striker vs. wrestler," Cortes-Acosta said. "I don't think he has the hands to match me in the octagon. Like I've said, every fight I'm evolving. I never stop evolving. I feel stronger and I'm heavier now." Advertisement There are high expectations for Cortes-Acosta in this matchup. He sees himself finishing the "Polar Bear" "I expect the knockout," Waldo-Acosta said. "Come Saturday, I'll be knocking on the door, and it will be opened."
