CBI Finds Losses Over Rs 4,200 Crore In JNPA Dredging Project Corruption Case
Financial losses of over Rs 4,200 crore have been flagged by the CBI in a corruption case linked to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority dredging project, NDTV Profit reported. The case has exposed deep-rooted corruption, inflated costs, and rigged contracts.
A huge network of criminal conspiracy involved manipulated tenders, suppressed competition, and collusion between officials and private firms.
The investigation centred around senior officials of JNPA and executives from Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE). It found a pattern of systemic irregularities and abuse of authority.
The CBI's complaint highlighted two main instances of over-dredging that led to wrongful losses of Rs 365.90 crore in Phase-I and Rs 438 crore in Phase-II. These figures are presented as key findings that initially surfaced during the enquiry.
However, the investigation goes much deeper. The CBI document explicitly notes that these losses are part of a broader web of financial misconduct and criminal conspiracy, which includes inflated estimates, tender manipulation, and rigged bidding processes.
Some of the most serious findings were:
Rs 1,163 crore was added to the project cost due to the choice of a deeper 15-meter vessel draft (Option II) over the originally proposed 14-meter draft (Option I), without reassessment or justification.
A Rs 557 crore loss resulted from the adoption of composite dredging rates for hard and weathered rock, along with unnecessary pretreatment costs, instead of using differential rates.
The violation of PIANC (Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses) guidelines led to Rs 964 crore in losses due to unauthorized channel widening in both phases.
An additional Rs 430 crore was paid for over-dredging during Phase-II, despite no supporting evidence of required depth.
Sources told NDTV Profit that CBI officials said all accused, including former JNPA Chief Manager Sunil Kumar Madabhavi and Devdutt Bose of TCE, will be summoned for questioning.
"The investigation is ongoing, with further financial and criminal liabilities likely to emerge," a source added.

Officers from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched simultaneous searches on Saturday at the properties of Tamil Nadu Rural Development Minister I Periyasamy, his family members, and linked premises in Dindigul and Chennai, reviving a years-old disproportionate assets case that had been dismissed but was recently reopened by the Madras High Court. About a dozen ED officials, split into three teams and backed by armed Central Reserve Police Force personnel, arrived at three residential locations in Dindigul — Durairaj Nagar, Vallalar Nagar, and Seelapadi — around 7:30 am. Local DMK cadre quickly gathered near the sites as police tightened security. The searches targeted the minister's home, as well as that of his son and Dindigul East MLA I P Senthil Kumar and his daughter Indra. In Chennai, ED teams conducted searches at Periyasamy's official bungalow on Greenways Road under heavy Central Armed Police Force protection. Officers also visited the MLAs' hostel at the Government Omandurar Estate. Periyasamy, a senior leader of the ruling DMK, his wife Suseela, and sons Senthil Kumar and Prabhu had been acquitted by a Dindigul trial court in a Rs 2.01 crore disproportionate assets case dating back to 2006–2010. The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption alleged that the family had amassed assets in excess of their known income during his earlier tenure as minister. The acquittal was overturned in April by Justice P Velmurugan of the Madras High Court, who ordered a fresh trial. The family has appealed in the Supreme Court, with a hearing scheduled for August 18. The DMK responded sharply, framing the raids as politically motivated and timed to distract from what the party called the BJP's own electoral misconduct. 'This is an attempt to divert attention from vote chori (theft),' said DMK organisation secretary R S Bharathi, invoking a phrase used by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to describe alleged fraud. In a formal statement, Bharathi said: 'The BJP stands exposed for indulging in electoral fraud by using the Election Commission. The country is shocked over this. To divert attention from the illegal vote chori, the Enforcement Directorate is conducting searches at premises linked to Periyasamy.' Bharathi said the DMK 'would neither fear the ED nor Modi,' and accused the BJP of weaponising state institutions: 'The BJP was using empowered and autonomous bodies as its election instruments.' While the ED has not disclosed the specific trigger for Saturday's searches, the revival of the disproportionate assets case has heightened political tensions as Periyasamy remains an influential figure in the DMK. The outcome of the Supreme Court hearing next week could determine whether the disproportionate assets case proceeds to trial again.

Two persons arrested with suspected ambergris in Kochi
Kochi: City police on Friday arrested two young men with suspected ambergris, which is prohibited from being held or sold under wildlife protection laws. Arrested individuals were identified as Jineesh, 39, and Saumithran, 38, both hailing from Puthuvype. The accused were caught allegedly with 1.2kg of ambergris by Palluruthy police while they were transporting the item for sale after finalizing a deal. According to police, the seized ambergris is estimated to have a value of approximately Rs 2 crore in international market. Acting on a tip-off received by city deputy commissioner Ashwathy Gigi, the operation was led by Mattancherry assistant commissioner Umesh Goyal, along with Palluruthy station inspector A K Sudheer. The accused and the seized ambergris were handed over to Erumeli forest officer for further proceedings, said police. On Aug 6, city police seized over one kilogram of ambergris from West Kochi area and arrested two youths hailing from Fort Kochi and Lakshadweep. ‘Make in India' milestone: Electronics exports jump 47% in Q1; 99% of mobiles now made domestically
India's electronics exports have hit a major milestone, recording a sharp jump in the first quarter of the financial year 2025-26. Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal announced on social media platform X that exports touched $12.4 billion, marking a surge of more than 47% compared with the same period in 2024-25. "Our electronics exports have seen a surge of over 47% in Q1 of 2025-26 over the same quarter in 2024-25.
