Volvo said that around 1,200 employee-held positions will be cut from its Swedish operations. The remaining job reductions would take place in various global markets, with most cuts targeting office roles.
Håkan Samuelsson, the president and CEO of Volvo Cars, acknowledged that these decisions were difficult but necessary.
'Volvo Cars has initiated negotiations with the relevant labour unions and will issue a notice for these office-based positions to the Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen) today,' said Volvo.
According to Volvo Cars, the exact number of reductions in other countries will be determined following a full organisational review as the company aims to complete these structural changes by autumn 2025.
'The actions announced today have been difficult decisions, but they are important steps as we build a stronger and even more resilient Volvo Cars. The automotive industry is in the middle of a challenging period. To address this, we must improve our cash flow generation and structurally lower our costs,' said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of the company.
Volvo Cars, owned by China's Geely Holding, reported a sharp drop in earnings for the first quarter of 2025 as its operating profit fell to 1.9 billion Swedish kronor from 4.7 billion kronor in the same period last year.
Volvo has confirmed that it will no longer issue financial forecasts for 2025 and 2026.

NEW DELHI: Reliance Jio has emerged as the world's largest telecom operator with over 480 million subscribers, including 191 million users on its fifth-generation (5G) network. It is also working with the Central government on the INDIAai initiative, and investing in satellite communications (satcom) as well as 6G technologies to be future-ready. 'Jio emerged as the world's largest data network with 488 million users, including 191 million on 5G,' Ambani said in RIL's annual report for FY25, released on Thursday. As of March 2025, Jio had nearly 191 million 5G users on its network, contributing 45% of its wireless data traffic. The telco has been able to significantly expand its 5G user base in India with a high per capita data usage despite the industry-wide tariff hike of up to 25% undertaken in July last year. 'Tariff revision introduced during the year was well absorbed, with no adverse impact on data consumption trends,' Reliance said. Jio, along with rival Bharti Airtel , offers commercial 5G services nationwide, including fixed wireless access (FWA) and high-speed mobile data. Vodafone Idea (Vi) recently said its 5G network has become available in 17 cities nationwide. 'The rollout of fixed wireless infrastructure has accelerated the growth of fixed broadband in the country. Fixed wireless technology with point-to-multi-point radios is taking services to currently underserved semi-urban/rural areas,' Reliance said, adding that India's fixed broadband user base is expected to grow multifold from the current 47 million premises over the next few years. Jio has connected over 18 million homes, and RIL attributed the acceleration in pace of home connects to the telco's 5G FWA solutions – JioAirFiber. 'Jio's AirFiber solution has been the primary reason for the acceleration in pace of home connects extending reach to all parts of the country, especially beyond the top 1,000 cities,' Reliance said, noting that Jio is confident of connecting 100 million homes with a combination of Fiber and AirFiber broadband solutions bundled with digital TV and on-demand entertainment. Jio's networks, as per the report, recorded a data consumption of 185 exabytes in the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2025. 'Jio is now the world's largest data operator, carrying over 17 exabytes of data traffic monthly with a ~60% share of wireless data traffic in India,' Reliance noted in the report. Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson earlier found that 5G subscriptions in India are expected to reach 970 million by 2030-end and may account for 74% of all mobile subscriptions by then. Jio's bets on AI, satcom, 6G Reliance said Jio is actively partnering with the government of India in its INDIAai mission, which has an outlay of ₹10,371.92-crore, to build a comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem to democratise computer access and develop indigenous AI capabilities. 'With an aim to streamline AI adoption, Jio is developing a comprehensive suite of tools and platforms called JioBrain, a powerful AI service platform that can be offered to enterprises across industries,' Reliance said, and added that that telco is already using AI for various operations such as network planning and maintenance, resource optimisation and customer services. The conglomerate said Jio will leverage its expertise in infrastructure, networking, operations, software and data, and collaborate with its global partners to enable the world's lowest AI inferencing cost in India to make AI available Everywhere for everyone. As per the report, Jio is working on future communication technologies, and actively researching and developing 6G technology with an aim to be a global leader in its development and deployment. 'To augment our technology leadership in building terrestrial networks, Jio is also building its own satellite communication platform and partnering with SpaceX to offer Starlink 's broadband internet services to its customers in India,' Reliance said. ETTelecom, on July 24, 2025 , reported that Luxembourg-based satellite operator SES's newly-inducted O3b mPower communications satellite systems would facilitate Jio's space broadband offering for enterprises in the country. Besides SES, Jio also has a partnership with billionaire Elon Musk's SpaceX, which provides low-Earth orbit (LEO) Starlink internet. Sunil Mittal-led Airtel, too, had partnered with Starlink this year. Parallelly, the telco is building its end-to-end managed services capabilities for enterprises to offer scalable connectivity combined with Cloud, IoT, managed Wi-Fi, private 5G, and other industry-specific solutions.

Thailand approves $600 million deal for Swedish fighter jets
Thailand approved the purchase of four Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets on Tuesday (August 5, 2025), the air force said, a week after reaching a ceasefire in deadly border clashes with Cambodia. The $600 million agreement for the Saab JAS 39 Gripens was first announced in June as part of a long-term plan to modernise the air force's combat capabilities. During five days of clashes with Cambodia that left more than 40 people dead, Thailand used its fleet of F-16s to strike military targets across the border. It was the deadliest border fighting between the two countries in decades. "The Cabinet has approved the purchase of JAS 39 Saab Gripen to strengthen the Royal Thai Air Force and protect Thailand's sovereignty," the air force said on its official Facebook page. A procurement committee began deliberations in August last year, concluding a 10-month review that favoured the Scandinavian-made jets over American F-16s. The kingdom already operates 11 older Gripens, as well as dozens of F-16s acquired in the 1980s. The country's total defence budget stands at 200 billion baht ($6 billion), which includes allocations for the army, navy and air force.
