ASU Polytechnic program helping to train new air traffic controllers

Yahoo24-05-2025

The Brief
The U.S. is facing a severe shortage of air traffic controllers.
A program at Arizona State University's Polytechnic campus is helping to train those who are interested in the field.
The facility used by the program simulates a Phoenix Skyt Harbor Airport terminal.
PHOENIX - With the United States facing a severe shortage of air traffic controllers, students headed to college might want to look into the aviation field.
For students interested in studying air traffic management and aviation, Arizona State University's Polytechnic campus in Mesa has them covered, with a state-of-the-art facility simulating Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport's Terminal 4.
What One Student Said
"You get such a newfound appreciation for it, but it's even just helped my pilot career in knowing what to expect, or even just visualizing other things. It's truly been incredible and a really fun experience, too, to get both sides of it. Like OK, here's the pilot realm. Here's what I'm experiencing," said Anna Ruffley.
Dig deeper
Roffley is studying to be a pilot, but she said she is grateful for the program and technology offered by ASU Polytechnic that will prepare her for any situation.
Inside the simulator building, students learn every detail of air traffic control procedures and operations.
"The blue screen is called the AZDE-X Airport Surface Detection Equipment, and that kind of helps controllers keep track of airplanes on the ground, on the taxiways, on the runways. Another tool that they can use to help separate airplanes," said John Delugt with ASU Polytechnic.
The 80-to-100-student program helps students gain not only a strong background in aircraft operations, but various skills and and business principes needed to work under the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The program will be receiving new additions to their technology this summer, in hopes that new Sun Devil additions will become employed to work for the busy skies soon.

Microsoft Warns 750 Million Windows Users As Upgrades Stop

New upgrade warning has just hit. Getty Images Microsoft has responded days after news that its critical Windows 11 upgrades have essentially stopped. October's deadline for 750 million users to upgrade to Windows 11 or lose security updates is fast approaching. And that latest data is alarming. As spotted by Windows Central, 'Microsoft has threatened Windows 10 users to upgrade to be on the 'right side of risk'.' And while 'it's accurate that Windows 11 will be more secure than an unsupported Windows 10, some feel the ad is too aggressive.' The comes after major PC maker Asus also warned Windows 10 PCs are 'magnets for security threats,' with the cybersecurity nightmare of hundreds of millions of PCs suddenly falling off support on October 14 now beginning to come true. Windows 10 versus Windows 11 (global share) Statcounter The comments below the YouTube video reflect the usual frustration with warnings to upgrade to Windows 11. 'Using the end of support for your old operating system as a selling point for your new one is actually insane,' says one, while another reflects the bigger issue: 'casually saying like everyone has enough money to buy a new laptop.' Windows 11 upgrade process had seemed to be getting on track, with several months of steady progress seeming likely to continue. But that is not the case. A month ago, Windows 11 was within 10% of Windows 11 globally for the first time, albeit that still left more than half of all users on Windows 10. That has changed and is getting worse. Windows 10 versus Windows 11 (U.S. share) Statcounter Statcounter's data at the end of May shows Windows 11 market share has declined globally and in the U.S., the key market where it has the largest relative share. After four months of progress the other way, this reversal sees Windows 10 holding stubbornly above 50%, with Windows 11 around 10% behind. Per those YouTube comments, the issue for at least 240 million of those 750 million Windows 10 users is that they need to upgrade their PCs as current ones are not eligible for the free upgrade. That's not cheap and is a factor. That said, most Windows 10 users can upgrade but are choosing not to — at least not yet. And time is running out.

A Killer New 'Predator' Movie Is Quietly Releasing This Week. Here's How To Watch

If you love the 1987 action/horror classic Predator, there's some very good news. While the next live action movie, Predator: Badlands, won't hit theaters until November 7, this week, there's another new Predator movie sneakily coming to streaming. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the same guy who brought us Prey in 2022, a new animated movie called Predator: Killer of Killers is hitting Hulu this Friday. Here's what to know about the plot, the trailers, and when to stream the newest Predator Killer of Killers will hit Hulu on Friday, June 5, 2025. If you have Disney+ with a Hulu add-on, you can stream it that way, too. There have been two major trailers for Killer of Killers, one that reveals the basic premise of the movie, and another, a behind-the-scenes video detailing how this animated movie tries to take striking concept art and bring it to life. Unlike other Predator movies, Killer of Killers is an anthology concept, meaning the roughly 90-minute film has three sections, each depicting people battling Predators in different historical periods. The movie starts with ancient Vikings, moves to feudal Japan, and eventually, depicts Predators attacking WWII fighter planes. There is a method to this madness, though. All three stories are linked, and by the end of the movie, you'll see why. If the concept of Predators battling humans in historical settings sounds familiar, it should. In 2022, Trachtenberg's film Prey depicted a Comanche woman named Naru (Amber Midthunder) battling a Predator in 1719. The vibe of Killer of Killers very much follows the mood of Prey, and if you're paying attention, there's even some pretty big Easter eggs connected to that movie. Presumably, all of this is setting up the next big movie, Predator: Badlands. Starring Elle Fanning, that sci-fi action flick hits theaters on November 7.
