Caesars Virginia gifts Danville Fire Department new truck

DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) – Caesars Virginia has already brought in millions of dollars in gaming tax revenue for the city of Danville. In honor of International Firefighters' Day, Caesar's Virginia hosted a ceremony for the Danville Fire Department on Tuesday morning.
The casino gifted it a $1.6 million, custom-built firetruck that took almost four years to build.
'We have a tremendous relationship with the fire department, and they were absolutely integral in us being able to get this facility open,' Chris Albrecht, the general manager of Caesars Virginia, said. 'The chief, the fire marshal and their teams were here almost every day for several months making sure that we were testing everything in this facility to make sure it was ready to go on opening day.'
While this was the first formal presentation of the truck to the fire department, it has been in use since February 15th. It works out of fire station one, and responds to all fire calls across the city, and it will assist in crashes.

Before the new one, the city's trucks only had ladders, which made aerial work a bit risky, but this truck has one key addition.
'This truck actually has a platform on it that we can work out of,' Danville fire chief David Coffey said. 'It just makes it more safe and efficient for our firefighters from an aerial approach, and as well as rescues.'
One of the main reasons for this presentation was to celebrate the partnership the casino has formed with the city.
It is something Caesars values tremendously.
'We want to continue to show that a lot of us are invested in seeing the success of Danville,' Albrecht said. 'It's really through these opportunities with our local organizations that we search those out to make sure that things aren't just going great today but continue to do so in the future.'
Chief Coffey has noticed the effort the casino has put in to maintain that strong partnership.
'Caesars has been a really good partner here in the city of Danville,' he said. 'We've had a great working relationship, and we look forward to that for many years to come.'
Caesars is hosting an event Wednesday night at 2 witches winery and brewing company, to talk with local nonprofits on how the two sides can work together to give back to the community.

Copper Cove Golf Club owners 'devastated,' by Friday fire

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A Friday morning fire heavily impacted the golf cart barn and pool system at Franklin County's Copper Cove Golf Club, just a week ahead of Memorial Day. 'First and foremost, we're glad that no one was hurt,' said co-owner Kelly Crovo, who also serves as the club's PGA general manager. 'All the other stuff can be replaced, and we're going to do everything we can to do that.' Crovo said the fire claimed their entire fleet of golf carts. 'This is quite devastating to be frank,' he said. 'If the clubhouse burned down and the carts didn't, we'd be better off. Because the carts are what we make money on. Without any carts, there is no revenue.' The cart barn also housed the club's pool system and restrooms, both of which were also heavily damaged. Crovo said that was especially disappointing, as they are now unsure when or if the pool will be able to open this summer, which impacts additional members of the community. Fires move fast, so should you: Danville FD gives tips on fire safety 'We've already hired people for pool attendants and lifeguards,' he said. 'So it affects not only us. It affects people in the community. A lot of people, this is what their income is, so it's a little rough right now.' Crovo said that projecting timelines for when certain services will be back online is still difficult, as they make their way through the extent of the damage and work to determine the cause of the fire. He said they will have a better idea of what the next few weeks will hold after meeting with insurance on Monday. For the time being, the club has arranged for rental carts to arrive this Wednesday, and they are hoping to be open for Memorial Day Weekend. The driving range and golf course remain open, and folks can still walk the course. 'We appreciate everyone who comes out and plays,' said Crovo. 'We'd love to have more. I feel like the golf course is in the best shape it's been since we owned it.' They ask that anyone interested in playing call the pro shop for scheduling while their online reservation system is temporarily down. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ‘A lot of sleepless nights': Copper Cove Golf Club owners building back after May fire

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The owners of Copper Cove Golf Club say they are in the process of rebuilding what was lost in a May 16 fire that claimed the Club's entire fleet of 52 golf carts and heavily damaged the pool system. 'We've never experienced anything like this personally or professionally,' said co-owner and club PGA general manager Kelly Crovo, who called the past two weeks, 'stressful.' Crovo said the fire marshal's office determined there was no foul play involved and that the cause was likely due to an animal biting through a hotwire or the battery in the range cart exploding. The fire happened just a week ahead of a typically very busy Memorial Day Weekend, when the pool had been scheduled to open. 'We were busy, but financially we could have done way better had we had a full fleet of carts,' said Crovo. RELATED STORY | Copper Cove Golf Club owners 'devastated' by Friday fire He said the money from golf cart rentals makes up at least 85 percent of the club's total revenue. 'Obviously we have costs involved with that too, but the margins are a little larger on [the cart rentals] than say buying a soda, a beer, and kind of food product,' said Crovo. They did not head into the weekend empty-handed, as they received 26 rental carts the Thursday prior to Memorial Day and 10 more from Roanoke Golf Carts to use for the weekend. Crovo said they are still waiting on a second shipment of 26 rental carts to replenish the 52 they lost in the fire. They have also begun taking stock of the damage to the pool system, which was housed in the same building as the golf carts. 'The number one priority right now is still in trying to remove the debris from inside the barn and the bathrooms,' said Crovo. 'Once we get that all clear, then we'll have a better understanding of what we need to do.' They have received a preliminary quote on the repairs required to reopen the pool, but Crovo said he and co-owner Billy McBride do not want to rush anything. 'Billy and I have agreed that we want to build back and try to build back better and more efficient,' said Crovo. 'But we want to do it in a timely manner but not a rushed manner.' That being said, they are working hard to get everything back online as soon as possible. 'We know that not only is it our livelihoods, but we've got a lot of people here that we hire and it's their livelihood too,' said Crovo. 'It's quite a bit of a weight.' They had already hired pool attendants, lifeguards, and extra people to help out the food and beverage staff. 'We're still trying to keep everybody employed,' said Crovo. 'It's just a lot of people are having less hours than what they normally would.' The owners say the best way the community can continue to help out is by coming by to play a round of golf. The 18-hole course, driving range, and food and beverage services are all operational. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
