Ex-England player to join Lionesses' celebrations
Julia Brunton, 73, helped to pave the way for England's modern-day success when she was selected for the first FA-affiliated women's team since the 1921 ban on women's football was rescinded.
Ms Brunton, from Hove, East Sussex, said she had been invited along with her teammates as VIPs to celebrate the Lionesses defending their Euros title in a penalty shootout victory over Spain on Sunday.
She said: "I will be very proud – I can't believe it has come this far since I played."
Ms Brunton added: "We saw what happened to women's football after 2022, so I hope it will take off even more.
"It's so nice when I go to Hove Park and see so many girls in football kits these days. It's a lovely thing to be a part of."
Ms Brunton, nee Manning, was selected for England to play against Scotland in 1972 while playing in her home town of Lowestoft.
She won her first official cap the following year, against France.
Ms Brunton moved to Brighton and Hove when she got married, later playing for the Brighton and Hove Supporters Club, Brighton GPO and C&C Sports – all precursors to the official Brighton & Hove Albion women's team.
In 2022, 50 years on from the first game, Ms Brunton reconnected with her former teammates when she received an official England cap from the FA.
Despite England conceding in the first half, Ms Brunton said she "always had a feeling we would win" as Alessia Russo headed home England's equaliser and the Lionesses beat Spain 3-1 on penalties.
Following a reception at Downing Street on Monday, the Lionesses will mark their success with an open-top bus parade and celebration outside Buckingham Palace today.

Pep Guardiola: Manchester City squad still too big, situation is ‘not healthy'
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola reiterated after his side's win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday that he is still not happy with the size of his squad and that more departures are necessary. Goals from Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and a double from Erling Haaland saw City beat Wolves 4-0 at Molineux in their opening match of the Premier League season. Cherki and Reijnders both arrived this summer and made their debuts in the game, alongside goalkeeper James Trafford and left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri. City have also signed back-up goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea as well as midfielder Sverre Nypan, who is set to move to Middlesbrough on loan. Advertisement Several players have already left the club this summer. Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker both left to join Napoli and Burnley respectively, with James McAtee signing for Nottingham Forest. Jack Grealish has joined Everton on loan, while Vitor Reis will spend the 2025-26 season with Girona. Despite the departures, Guardiola has insisted that the squad is still too big and needs to be reduced before the end of the transfer window on September 1. 'Too much. Too many people,' Guardiola said after the Wolves game when asked about the issue. 'On the bench we had Nathan (Ake) and Gundo (Ilkay Gundogan). 'I like a deep squad to compete in all competitions but I don't want to leave players at home. It's not healthy. You cannot create a good vibe or atmosphere to compete. The club has known it since last season but the situation is what it is. In the next two weeks, people will talk with players and agents to find a solution.' Phil Foden, Rodri, Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol, and Savinho all missed Saturday's match through injury. Some members of Guardiola's squad continue to be linked with moves away. Forest are working on a deal to sign full-back Rico Lewis while Tottenham Hotspur made an approach for Savinho. This is not the first time that Guardiola has lamented the size of his squad. 'We have a long squad, too many players,' he said on June 22. 'We cannot go with 26 or 27 players this season because there would be more not playing. 'Step by step, maybe a few players are going to move.' Goalkeeper Ederson also missed the Wolves match through illness amid uncertainty over his future at the club following Trafford's arrival. Yesterday I saw (Ederson's) illness, gastroenteritis and after I didn't speak to the club,' said Guardiola. 'If the player wants to leave he has to leave but on the conditions of the club. There's no sense if he's not happy here but the final decision and the way to make the deal belongs 100 per cent to the club so I don't know what will happen in the next two weeks.' City return to action next Saturday when they host Tottenham in their second Premier League game of the campaign. () Spot the pattern. Joy for Lampard and Steel City woe - Aaron McLean's EFL takeaways
Saturday's EFL action provided the usual thrills and spills we've come to expect over the years. Former Peterborough, Hull and Bradford striker and Final Score pundit Aaron McLean gave his five takeaways from what we learned across the Championship, League One and League Two. 'Fantastic result for Frank Lampard' Coventry City came out on top of a topsy-turvy eight-goal thriller against Midlands rivals Derby County at lunchtime. The Sky Blues twice led but then went 3-2 behind before eventually running out 5-3 winners. McLean: "It's a fantastic result for Frank Lampard. At one point it might have seemed like they threw it away when they allowed Derby back into it, but it was great character from Frank Lampard's side. "I think it's definitely a statement. Since Frank's come through the door, he has restored belief in that club massively. "The progression they have made under him is massive and they will be looking to kick on now this season." Coventry beat Derby in eight-goal thriller Lampard following Derby County win Steel City becomes the city of woe There's not been much to cheer about in the Steel City so far this season. Both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday are pointless after their opening two Championship matches having changed their respective managers in the summer. The Blades, who lost last season's Championship play-off final to Sunderland, went down 1-0 at Swansea City, while beleaguered Wednesday lost 3-0 at home to Stoke City. McLean: "Really disappointing from Sheffield United, I think they're still suffering a hangover from last season. "Obviously with the change of manager as well, Ruben Selles coming in, at the minute things don't seem to be gelling. "Sheffield seems a tough place to be at the moment. When you look at Sheffield Wednesday, as well - the transfer embargo, the protests, and the results on the pitch, there's so many things going wrong. "It's sad to see because it's such a big club, when they are winning games, Hillsborough is one of the best places in the country to play. "The fans don't have their football club at the moment and until it is sold there are going to be more dark days like today." Three goals and a funeral on day of protest at Wednesday Stoke cruise to win at stricken Sheff Wed Ronald gives Swansea edge over Sheffield United Surprise package Stevenage early pace-setters in League One Stevenage's 2-0 home victory against Northampton Town sent them to the summit of League One. Their third league win out of three means Alex Revell's side are now the only team to have a 100% record in the third tier. McLean: "Alex Revell has really got the boys playing. What he has done in a short space of time, along with his 10 new signings so far, he's made them believe in the project. "Last season, they were probably a bit inconsistent and that's probably why they fell away but, if they continue to play in the way that they are playing, they will definitely be challenging for a play-off spot." Stevenage 2-0 Northampton Town Alex Revell: 'This is just the start of it' Ten-man Blackpool see off League One favourites Huddersfield Ten-man Blackpool claimed a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Huddersfield Town at Bloomfield Road, with all of the goals coming in the first 31 minutes. Forward Niall Ennis went from hero to zero as he received a straight red card in the first half after scoring a quick-fire double for the Tangerines but Steve Bruce's side held on to claim their first points of the season. McLean: "Great result for Steve Bruce and Blackpool. They did a job today against one of the favourites for the title in Huddersfield. "They've made a lot of big signings, Alfie May notably being the biggest - he guarantees Town goals, but Steve Bruce has done what he has done year in, year out. "He brings together a group of players who are going to work hard. For them to win 3-2, after being down to 10 men, just shows the character that they've got within their dressing room." Blackpool 3-2 Huddersfield Town Bruce: 'We needed something like today' MK Dons 'are going to take some stopping' MK Dons put in a five-star performance to thrash Cheltenham Town in League Two. Paul Warne's side were widely tipped for promotion in the summer and, following an opening-day draw, have now registered back-to-back victories in the fourth tier as they climb into the early-stage promotion places. McLean: "They've spent a lot of money, they've brought in a lot of experienced players, Nathanial Mendez-Laing and Callum Paterson - they have benefited from the woes of Sheffield Wednesday. "They've come in and hit the ground running - Paterson, two goals and two assists so far to kick the season off. "Now that they're on a roll, I think they are going to take some stopping." Cox thrills as Invincibles hit record Hundred score
The Hundred men's competition, The Kia Oval Oval Invincibles 226-4 (100 balls): Cox 86* (29) Welsh Fire 143 (93 balls): Bairstow 50 (28); T Curran 4-15 Oval Invincibles won by 83 runs Scorecard. Table Jordan Cox lit up The Hundred as Oval Invincibles smashed the record for the competition's highest total by piling up 226-4 in an 83-run victory over Welsh Fire. Cox crashed 86 not out from just 29 balls in a thrilling display of six hitting at The Oval and the Invincibles comfortably passed the previous record score - Manchester Originals' 208-5 against Northern Superchargers in 2022. England right-hander Cox hit 10 of the innings' 17 sixes in front of a jubilant home crowd. Openers Tawanda Muyeye and Will Jacks laid a platform of 76 in 39 balls before Cox, after a steady start, exploded into life by hitting four sixes in one set of five balls from Hundred debutant Ajeet Singh Dale. The seamer then dropped Cox on 45 but the only further catching opportunities came for those in the stands. Cox put on 97 in only 39 balls with Sam Curran who made 34, while Jacks' 38 from 28 was the next highest score. Invincibles' dominance continued into the chase as Stephen Eskinazi was caught off Jason Behrendorff's first ball and Cox then produced one more special moment by clinging on to a spiralling catch running back from mid-on to dismiss Steve Smith for seven. Fire were bowled out for 143, making it the third-biggest defeat in The Hundred, although by hitting eight further sixes they ensured the match featured the most sixes in one match in the competition. Two-time defending champions Invincibles join Superchargers and Trent Rockets on 12 points at the top of the table but go top courtesy of their impressive net run-rate. Rockets win after Hose suffers serious ankle injury Capsey stars as Invincibles blow away winless Fire The Hundred 2025 - fixtures, results & reports Cox creates carnage at The Oval The 17 sixes hit by Invincibles is the most in a Hundred innings across its four previous seasons. Cox's 10 also equalled the individual record held by Liam Livingstone. Remarkably, he took only eight runs from his first eight balls before flogging Singh Dale over the leg side for his first three boundaries. A wide and a dot ball followed after which Cox, who was left out of England's white-ball squads on Friday, played an audacious reverse scoop over third man to the seamer's final ball. From there the hitting was relentless. If Invincibles bowled short Cox whipped the ball over fine leg or powered it over extra cover. When the seamers went full they were hit at a strike-rate of 308. "None of the bowlers seemed to be able to calm themselves down and it multiplied," former England bowler Steve Finn told BBC Two. "The way Jordan Cox played was freakish. "It wasn't bludgeoning. It was timing the ball." After Curran was caught, Donovan Ferreira emerged and crashed his first ball for six. The 200 was reached in 91 balls and when Tom Curran flicked the 96th for four a new highest Hundred score had been reached. There was still time for two more Cox sixes - one a glorious checked drive - but Muyeye perhaps summed up his side best. "For me it feels like playing for [Michael Jordan's six-time NBA winners] Chicago Bulls in the 90s, in terms of cricket," he said. "That's how good everyone is." What is happening on Sunday? The highlight of Sunday's action is the cross-Pennine derby between Manchester Originals and Northern Superchargers. The women's game at Old Trafford begins at 11:00 BST and the men's 14:30. Birmingham Phoenix also host London Spirit on Sunday. The women's game is at 14:30 and then men's 18:00.
