From Isan to KL: Mama Lek is back, bringing their excellent Thai beef noodles from Setapak to Wisma Cosway
KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 27 — A little over two years ago, Malay Mail's Lee Khang Yi wrote about Mama Lek, a small, family-run stall in Setapak that serves excellent Thai beef noodles.
The family hails from Kelantan, and Mama Lek herself is originally from the Isan region in northeastern Thailand.
It was a humble operation, but the noodles were a hit — 'a home run' for my colleague — and in 2024, Mama Lek was recognised with a Thai Select Award by the Malaysian office of Thailand's Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP).
They announced plans to relocate in October last year, and earlier this week, Mama Lek debuted as a full-fledged restaurant on the ground floor of Wisma Cosway.
Here, they face stiff competition from the many eateries offering affordable, hulking portions (like a chicken chop for RM8) to the hordes of office workers pouring through the building at lunch hour.
It's only been a week, but Mama Lek has already proven to be a hit with the office lunch crowd. — Picture by Ethan Lau
But when I visited at half past one on a weekday, Mama Lek was bouncing like a club on Friday night.
Thankfully, unlike a club, the wait was much shorter, not even five minutes, and inside, the place smelled far better: eau de boeuf over vapes and bad BO.
Aside from the obvious shift in atmosphere (namely air conditioning), there are now a few branding flourishes: printed bowls, messages on the chopstick holders, and a card on 'how to enjoy Thai beef noodles like a Thai,' with instructions for seasoning using the condiment caddy, which includes fish sauce, chilli flakes, chilli oil and chilli vinegar, and for making your own nam jim with the latter two.
Not sure what to do with the condiments? The card has you covered. — Picture by Ethan Lau
You now order via a QR code, and the options span the gamut: beef ball noodles (RM16.90 for 5 balls), braised beef and balls (RM23.90), fresh beef and balls (RM21.50), beef tripe and tendon (RM25.80), and the signature beef mix (RM33.50) with a little bit of everything: braised beef, fresh sliced beef, tripe, tendon, tongue, and beef balls.
There's also a tom yum variation on the beef noodles, and, staying true to their pork-free roots, the only non-beef alternative is chicken noodle soup.
Understandably, prices are higher than at the old location, but that's expected when you move into a city-centre building.
I settled for the mix, though they had run out of tongue when I visited and made up the difference with other parts of the cow.
The broth is every bit as magical as promised: a thick, heavyset, beefcake of a broth, teeming with depth and collagen for a luscious mouthfeel.
It gets even better with a touch of fish sauce and chilli vinegar — the beefy flavours are bedded in, and the acidity lifts everything just a bit.
Make sure to make your own 'nam jim' with the chilli oil and vinegar. — Picture by Ethan Lau It's perfect for dipping. — Picture by Ethan Lau
The thin slices of just-cooked beef are best dipped into a nam jim of chilli oil and vinegar, spicy and savoury with just the right amount of tang.
The brisket is impressively tender, and so are the soft and slippery tendons. Magic in a bowl.
It's heartening to see a humble family-run stall make the leap into a proper restaurant without losing the soul of what made them great in the first place.
The bowls may be branded now, and the air-conditioning much appreciated, but the essence is still the same: rich broth, tender beef, and a mother's love and care in every detail.
It can be hard to snap a discreet photo of the front when the family running it is as friendly as they are — Eric, in particular, is very warm and approachable. — Picture by Ethan Lau

Thai military prepared for 'high-level operation' if Cambodia border row escalates
By Juarawee Kittisilpa, Panu Wongcha-um BANGKOK (Reuters) -Thailand's military said it is ready to launch a "high-level operation" to counter any violation of its sovereignty, in the strongest words yet in a simmering border dispute with Cambodia that re-erupted with a deadly clash last week. The army said in a statement late on Thursday that its intelligence gathering indicated Cambodia had stepped up its military readiness at their border while diplomatic efforts were ongoing, describing that as "worrisome". The statement was in sharp contrast with one from the government just hours earlier, when it urged Cambodia to positively engage in dialogue via an existing mechanism between them. "The army is now ready for a high-level military operation in case it is necessary to retaliate against the violation of sovereignty," it said, ahead of a meeting of its armed forces top brass scheduled for Friday. "Operations of units at the border have been conducted carefully, calmly and based on an understanding of the situation to prevent losses on all sides, but at the same time, are ready to defend the country's sovereignty to the fullest extent if the situation is called for." Cambodia's government did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Thai military statement on Friday. The governments of the two countries had for days exchanged carefully worded statements committing to dialogue after a brief skirmish in an undemarcated border area on May 28 in which a Cambodian soldier was killed. Although the two countries have a historic rivalry, their governments enjoy friendly ties, partly due to the close relationship between their influential former leaders, Thailand's Thaksin Shinawatra and Cambodia's Hun Sen, whose daughter and son respectively are now the prime ministers in their countries. The issue comes at a tricky time for the Pheu Thai Party-led administration in Thailand as it battles to revive a flagging economy that could be hit by steep U.S. tariffs, while facing a challenge to its popularity having paused a signature cash handout to tens of millions of people. The party of the billionaire Shinawatra family has a troubled history with the Thai military, which twice toppled its governments in 2006 and 2014 coups. Deadly clashes between Cambodia and Thailand last erupted in 2011 over the Preah Vihear, a 900-year-old temple at the heart of a decades-long row that has stirred nationalist sentiment on both sides. The International Court of Justice in 2013 ruled in favour of Cambodia in clarifying a 1962 decision to award it jurisdiction over the temple, saying part of the land around it was Cambodia's and Thai troops must withdraw from the area. Cambodia said this week it is committed to peace and plans to resolve the issue by referring disputes over four parts of their border to the ICJ and has asked Thailand to cooperate. Thailand says it does not recognise the court's jurisdiction. (Reporting Juarawee Kittisilpa; Writing by Martin Petty; Editing by John Mair)

Musk declares war on Trump as split over ‘big, beautiful' bill gets personal
A stunning day of insults traded between two of the world's most powerful men followed the public division between Musk, formerly head of the DOGE initiative, and the president who saw the Tesla chief off with an Oval Office goodbye just one week ago. As the tweets and posts kept coming, stunned watchers from across the political spectrum were breaking out the popcorn. By the end of the afternoon, the pair's myriad assortment of friends and political allies were desperately (and publicly) calling for a truce. It may already be too late. Elon Musk, known for his ability to dial every interpersonal conflict up to 100 at the drop of a hat, did so on Thursday. In multiple tweets, he insinuated that the US president was in the 'Epstein Files' — the so-called investigation into sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein, who died by suicide in a Manhattan detention center. That was the reason, Musk said, the unredacted investigation into Epstein's death was not released, and for so many questions remaining about the wealthy pedophile and the activities he and his network of influential friends got up to. Musk sent more than 50 in total throughout Thursday. In one, he acknowledged that Trump's tariffs were projected by some economists to have put the US on course for a recession by the end of the year. In another, he groused that Trump was 'ungrateful' for his help in winning the 2024 election. By the end of the day, it was clear that Musk had blown far past the point of retaining any allies in the Republican caucuses on Capitol Hill. His rapid descent into personal attacks and insinuations of darker conspiracies afoot was sure to lose even the unhappiest critics of the 'one big, beautiful bill' who were originally thrilled to see Elon in their camp. Especially after Musk responded 'yes' to a tweet from Malaysian Twitter troll and political commentator Ian Miles Cheong, stating that Trump should be impeached and JD Vance should take over. Trump, for his part, fired back occasionally but was clearly satisfied to sit back and watch the world's richest man spin out. Declining to address any of his former ally's insinuations, Trump wrote: 'I don't mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago. This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress.' Musk may have unknowingly ceded ground in the dispute by devolving into personal attacks — particularly one most frequently uttered by left-leaning critics of the president on Twitter. It was hard to see the feud as anything but the result of bruised egos: at one point, Musk posted a 'raised-eyebrow' emoji in a quote tweet of grainy, years-old MSNBC footage showing Morning Joe discussing Trump appearing on camera at a party with the disgraced financier and accused sex trafficker. Whatever the case, the bromance between Trump and Musk is now officially over and would take a miracle — or a rewriting of immediate history — to repair. Don't expect to hear the word 'DOGE' out of Trump's mouth any time soon. This feud is likely to get worse before it gets better, as there are few men the two respect sufficiently who could moderate efforts to repair the growing rift. Instead, this is likely to be the end of Elon Musk's politicking for the Republican Party. Already publicly having committed to taking a step back, Musk comes out of the first half of 2025 having been burned in ways that few people in human history can really say they've experienced. After spending a record sum to elect Trump and Republicans in 2024, Musk devoted significant time and energy to DOGE, only to see the results loudly denounced by vast swaths of the electorate and torn apart by the press. His personal brand, and that of his company, were tied to the effort only to see his reputation torn to shreds, Tesla's profits plummet, and his relationship with the president end in tragedy. In a way, the real winner of Thursday's social media brawl was Mike Johnson. The Speaker of the House just watched someone who was poised to become the biggest obstacle to further progress on the budget reconciliation plan seemingly self-destruct in record time. There are many still publicly hoping that the bill will undergo changes in the Senate. Some want to divide it up, while several members of the House Freedom Caucus have lamented that more cuts to Medicaid and other programs were not included. 'I'm all in for more cuts to the bill. It's big, but it's not beautiful yet,' wrote Rep. Andy Ogles in an X post Thursday morning, which would be reposted by Musk. By the end of the day, Ogles was trying to put lipstick on a pig. 'Some are focused on the big beautiful brawl — but everyone in Congress should be focused on making the Big Beautiful Bill better,' he wrote later in the day. If Musk doesn't reverse course over the next few hours or days, the conservative holdouts against the 'big, beautiful bill' in the House and Senate may see much of their political cover evaporate.
