Propper takes aim at Scottish football after Rangers exit

Propper left Rangers after only a year at Ibrox in what was a tough season for the 31-year-old, who was not in manager Russell Martin's plans for the new season.
But in a scathing assessment of football in Scotland, Propper wasn't impressed with the mentality, as he explained in a homeland interview.
He said: "In Scottish football, the crowd wants everything to happen immediately. That's what people want. The ball has to be kicked towards the goal as soon as possible.
"You see a lot of one-on-one duels, which means you end up playing in large spaces. It's kick and rush.
"That's part of the culture. That's how football is played. It's a completely different dynamic to here.
"I'm not a true man-marker and you certainly see a lot of that there.
"My better games came in the Europa League, where we reached the quarter finals deservedly.
"I rely on coaching and composure on the ball. That's why they brought me in. To make the transition to a more polished game.
"It was a different world for me, but it was wonderful to experience.
"Scotland truly breathes football. Footballers are revered. The nostalgia, the history, the sheer fanaticism in the stadiums. It's truly special.

"Celtic v Rangers has been a very special match for decades. And it still is, although Rangers unfortunately lost out in the significant games to Celtic.
"Rangers didn't win the title either and then everything suddenly turned upside down.
"There was a new owner and a new manager. They brought in new players, including players in my position. I took my time to assess that, but I realised it would be a difficult situation.
"So unfortunately, my adventure in Scotland ended prematurely."

Mikel Arteta shares the MOST IMPORTANT trait he looks for in a signing - and the two players he must gel with in Arsenal dressing room

Mikel Arteta has revealed the crucial trait he looks for in a transfer target and the two players any new signing must gel with in the Arsenal dressing room. As they continue to try and end their more than 20-year wait for the Premier League title, the Gunners have made a number of high-profile signings in recent years. They scooped England midfielder Declan Rice in a £105million deal a couple of years ago, in the same transfer window they splashed out more than £60m on rival Chelsea forward Kai Havertz. And the club's big spending certainly hasn't stopped this summer, with Arteta notably bolstering his squad with Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, Noni Madueke from Chelsea and the highly-sought after Viktor Gyokeres. But despite the undoubted quality on the pitch of Arsenal's glitzy new additions, Arteta revealed this week that a good personality is the most important trait he looks for in a player. He made the surprising revelation while speaking at the announcement of his new role as Under Armour's global ambassador this week, saying: 'Personality (is the most important trait. Without that, you have no chance. You have to look at somebody's eyes. The Gunners have bolstered their squad this summer with the signings of Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke, as well as Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi 'When I go to sign a player, sometimes it's on Zoom and I open the laptop. It's the first impression. 'Is this guy ready to put that jersey on, work in that dressing room and take all the noise that us surrounding his signing and deal with it in the right way? 'And then we go to the qualities and how this player is going to relate to other people because at the end, this player is going to have to glide into the dressing room. So, you have to imagine this personality and in this position and how they are going to connect with Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.' The Gunners are gearing up for the start of their Premier League campaign on Sunday, when they take on Manchester United at Old Trafford in an important game for both managers. After a dire first season at the helm, Ruben Amorim will be hoping to start his second term strongly after bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbuemo and most recently Benjamin Sesko. While Arteta will be looking to live up to fans' expectations of a trophy this season after plugging the hole up-front which blighted the Gunners last season with Viktor Gyokeres. But Amorim is more likely than most managers to be able to stop the powerful Swede having managed him at Sporting Lisbon. Indeed, in quotes which recirculated this week, back in March 2024 the Portuguese coach gave a brutal assessment of Gyokeres' game, highlighting a major flaw. 'There's a lot Gyokeres needs to improve on,' Amorim had said in the aftermath of Sporting crashing out of the Europa League to Atalanta by virtue of a 3-2 aggregate defeat. 'He plays the same way against a slow or a fast centre-back. Everything he does in the Portuguese First Division, he does against Atalanta. 'He can still improve his understanding of the game. He still lacks defensive reaction, and all coaches look at that.' Gyokeres will no-doubt be looking to get his Arsenal career off to a bang on Sunday with a goal against his former boss's new side.

Rangers ‘interested in signing Premier League left-back, 32, as Russell Martin eyes replacement for Jefte'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT's no secret that Russell Martin needs to sign another left-back before the transfer window closes. The Rangers boss could be seriously lacking options in that department in the coming days and weeks as Jefte looks set to depart, while Ridvan Yilmaz is out of favour as well. 3 Jefte is on his way out of Rangers Credit: Willie Vass 3 Ridvan Yilmaz could join him in heading for the exit door Credit: PA 3 Russell Martin reportedly has his eyes on a Premier League star to replace them Credit: Getty Brazilian ace Jefte is reportedly closing in on a big-money move back to his homeland, with Palmeiras nearing a £6million deal for the 22-year-old. Yilmaz, meanwhile, has been nowhere to be seen after losing his shirt number to Max Aarons when he joined on loan from Bournemouth. He has been linked with a move back to Besiktas all summer and it looks increasingly likely that he'll also call it a day in Glasgow before the window closes. That leaves Gers in desperate need of a replacement and reports from Spain suggest Martin is looking at an experienced defender to take their place at Ibrox. According to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Anouna, Rangers have expressed interest in signing veteran full-back Alex Moreno, who Martin will know well from his time managing down south. Moreno, who can also be deployed on the wing, is currently at Aston Villa but spent last season on loan at Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest, where he made 15 appearances in the league. The 32-year-old joined Villa from Real Betis in January 2023 and has since made 48 appearances for the club in all competitions, but looks set to leave this summer after 18 months down south. He has just one year left on his contract and several clubs are believed to be circling, including the Light Blues. The report claims that his old club Betis are leading the race for his signature, but they also face stiff competition from the Ibrox club and La Liga rivals Girona. It is claimed, though, that the Spaniard's preferred option would be a move back to his former team in Spain. Rangers players look terrified and exposed under Russell Martin Moreno first burst onto the scene with Llagostera as a youngster before sealing a move to Mallorca in 2023, where he spent a season before joining Rayo Vallecano. That's where he began making a name for himself as he spent four full seasons - enjoying stints in La Liga as well as the second tier. Betis then snapped him up in 2019 and he came a regular starter for the side, helping them clinch the Copa del Rey in the 2021/22 season. Rangers working on nine deals as 49ers grant Russell Martin transfer wish

The Light Blues are in the market for new faces after a sluggish start to the season domestically Rangers are in the midst of a major rebuild under Russell Martin - with the new boss having to put his style of play in place while churning out results from big games. ‌ The new Ibrox owners Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises have so far green-lit nine new faces that have come through the door - and helped the club secure a Champions League playoff showdown with Club Brugge. ‌ And while things have gone to plan so far in Europe and the push to reach the £40million jackpot in the league phase, domestically Martin has two draws to his name so far in the Premiership going into Saturday's Premier Sports Cup clash with Alloa. ‌ That sluggish start on home soil looks to have jolted more moves in the market - with defence a key area that is to be improved. But going into the clash with Alloa, Martin was playing has cards close to his chest over a deal: 'He doesn't play for us so I can't tell you anything about the kid. "I've never spoken to him in my life. So yeah I don't really know. It's true. I'm not kidding you on. I don't know.' Jack Butland has been the stand-out performer for the Light Blues so far this summer - but boss Martin has already admitted earlier in the window he would like to bring in a third goalkeeper to rival the England cap and Liam Kelly. He said: "I think you need to have two good goalkeepers, ideally three at a club like this. I think it's the same as any position." ‌ Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles is on the agenda witha bid reportedly rejected from Rangers. And while the cash-strapped club are said to be demanding over £1million for the shot-stopper, The Sheffield Star report the club are "unable to offer any real assurances over the future." ‌ As it stands Wednesday don't have a senior goalkeeper coach, while it is claimed "players getting their wages is far from a guarantee" and they are "unlikely to be able to offer an improved contract" to the 20-year-old. In terms of outgoings, Jefte is inching closer to a move back to Brazil to join Palmeiras In a £6million deal and has been left out of the Champions League squad for the playoff clash with Club Brugge. Boss Martin said: 'The club will update you as and when something happens. He's in this morning so I guess that's all I can tell you as the manager right now.' ‌ Fringe men also appear to be heading for the Ibrox exit. Ridvan Yilmaz has dropped out of the Ibrox picture under Martin with Besiktas president Serdal Adali revealed this week that the club are in talks over bringing the 24-year-old back to the club - with reports in Turkey suggesting talks remain ongoing over a fee. Jose Cifuentes is also reportedly in talks over another loan exit after a year on loan at Aris Saloniki. ‌ Rabbi Matondo is said to be in talks over a move to Gaziantep FK - while reports south of the border suggest a loan move to Cardiff City is also an option. Leon King and Clinton Nsiala are free to explore their options after dropping out of the first-team picture - while the door could be opening for Ben Davies to return to Birmingham City. The centre-back was a key player for City last term as they secured a return to the English Championship. City star Krystian Bielik has now joined West Brom which could restart an exit plan for Davies.
