NEW DELHI: India's thirst for oil will rise increase than any other country at a million barrels per day (bpd) over the next five years, making it the main driver of global demand growth, the International Energy Agency said in its forecast to 2030 released on Tuesday.
India currently consumes under 5 million bpd, 85% of which is met through imports. Higher dependence will weigh on the country's energy security at a time when, as the IEA report says, the global oil market is in turmoil due to regional military conflicts, trade tensions and resetting of supply trajectory following the OPEC+ decision to unwind production curbs.
'India's stellar expansionary trajectory will continue unabated, with GDP growth averaging 6.4% over the forecast period.
This is the highest by far of any major economy,' says the report. It identifies 'structural advantages such as an expanding middle class with growing spending power and young population dynamics' as the main propellers of oil demand.
'Additionally, improved infrastructure will help to boost mobility and car ownership. Oil demand will grow at a relatively fast rate as changing spending patterns, urbanisation and industrialisation make India's economy more energy intensive.'

For the record, the report gives a rider saying, 'With conflicts in the Middle East region at risk of intensifying and trade negotiations ongoing, uncertainties surrounding our forecasts are substantial'.
Aware of the situation, India has charted a multi-pronged course to reduce import dependence with focus on raising domestic production, tapping unconventional sources such as biogas and ethanol, speedy electrification of the mobility sector combined with a thrust on expanding renewable energy capacity.
Transport fuels will lead the oil demand growth, says the report, describing it as a 'global anomaly' in an oblique reference to expanding fleet of electric vehicles (EVs). Jet fuel demand will rise the fastest, 'benefitting the most from population growth of 5% between 2025 and 2030 and rapidly expanding middle class keen to spend on luxury goods and services, including foreign travel.'
Citing the current low car ownership, the report projects an upside for expansion in petrol demand.
'Our models assume a 40% increase in the size of the car fleet by 2030 – a rate of expansion that comfortably outstrips the impact of efficiencies and EVs, with growth in the latter category mainly in two- and three-wheelers'.
For diesel, which accounts for a third of India's total oil use, the report projects an aggregate gain of 380 kilo-barrels per day over the forecast period, 'buoyed by secular trends such as urbanisation, industrialisation and the building out of the country's infrastructure.'
Demand for industrial-linked products will only marginally lag the growth rate for retail-oriented transport fuels, with annual increases in gasoil, naphtha and LPG/ethane of 3.3%, 2.0% and 2.5%, respectively. The report says government schemes such as 'Ujjwala' for expanding access to clean cooking fuel will boost LPG demand.

This isn't the first warning — back in April, after imposing reciprocal tariffs on 60 countries (excluding pharma at the time), Trump had hinted that pharma tariffs would come in at 'never seen before" levels and were under active review. 'Pharma tariffs are going to come in at levels you haven't really seen before. We are looking at pharmaceuticals as a separate category. We will be announcing that sometime in the near future, and not too distant future. It's under review right now," Trump had said back in April. The US Commerce Department is currently investigating pharma imports under Section 232, which evaluates the impact of imports on national security. If such tariffs are imposed and companies are unable to pass on the cost, analysts at Citi estimate Indian firms with high exposure to the US generics market could see a 9%-12% one-time hit to their Ebitda.

Last year, basmati fetched an average price of over Rs 3,300 per quintal in the private market, ranging between Rs 2,531 and Rs 3,550. Paddy was sold at around Rs 2,400 per quintal under the minimum support price (MSP) regime. Although paddy offers slightly higher yields, basmati's added advantages are fuelling the shift. "Unlike paddy, basmati requires significantly less water, which aligns with the govt advisory of promoting sustainable farming amid growing water scarcity. Early-maturing basmati varieties like PUSA 1509 also allow farmers to grow a third crop—typically vegetables such as potatoes or peas—between the wheat and rice cycles, adding to their income," explained Tejinder Singh, chief executive officer of Amar Singh Chawla Wala, makers of the popular Lal Qila basmati brand, said. This year, the agriculture department aims to bring at least 10,000 additional hectares under basmati cultivation. "We're seeing unprecedented interest in basmati, especially in the high-yielding, disease-resistant PUSA 1692 variety, which delivers 22 to 24 quintals per hectare," said Dr Baljinder Singh Bhullar, chief agriculture officer. Dr Raman Kumar, subject matter specialist (plant protection), added that PUSA 1509 is a preferred short-duration variety, giving farmers sufficient time to plant another vegetable crop. "Farmers are increasingly opting for PUSA 1121, 1509, 1692, and similar basmati variants," he said. Farmers are also optimistic about prices this season, partly due to geopolitical developments especially Israel-Iran war. "Earlier, our basmati shipments were often returned due to pesticide residues, but with the ban on use of pesticides, Punjab's basmati is high in demand abroad. This year we expect it will fetch a handsome price due to demand from West Asian countries," said Ravinder Singh, a farmer from Amritsar.
