On Day 1 As MP, Kamal Haasan Raises Polarisation, Seeks Centrism

Chennai:
Actor-politician Kamal Haasan, freshly sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP, has released a deeply reflective open letter addressed to citizens of the country including his home state, Tamil Nadu.
He laid out his vision for the country, underscoring the need for centrism, ethical governance, diversity and national unity at a time he described as a "historic crossroads."
Mr Haasan, the founder and president of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), described his entry into parliament not as a formality, but as a solemn promise to uphold the Constitution with "fidelity, courage, and conscience."
"I do not arrive in parliament as a mere critic," he wrote, "but as a committed contributor to the idea of India. Where I must oppose, I will do so with reason. Where I must support, I will do so with conviction. And where I must advise, I will do so constructively - not to score points, but to build consensus."
In what is clearly a foundational declaration of his political ideology, Mr Haasan passionately advocated for centrism - not as a compromise, but as a conviction. He described centrism as the core ideology of MNM, calling it "the art of balance - of embracing both equity and efficiency, liberty and fraternity, tradition and progress."

Reiterating unity in diversity and drawing inspiration from India's freedom movement, Mr Haasan wrote, "It was not a monochrome march, but a magnificent mosaic - Gandhiji's non-violence, Ambedkar's constitutionalism, Nehru's pluralism, Patel's pragmatism, and Periyar's rationalism - all found space under the same sky." At the heart of this movement, he said, was a spirit of centrism that could once again help "rescue our Republic from the perils of division."
Mr Haasan warned that the country stands at a pivotal moment - "not of comfort, but of consequence." With the world's largest youth population, he said India is blessed with the energy of tomorrow but must not squander that future with complacency. "The cries for equity, for employment, for education, and for ethical governance must not echo unheard in the corridors of power," he said.
He promised to be a "clear, compassionate, and committed" voice for Tamil Nadu in Delhi. "I will not speak for one community but for the common good. Not for narrow gain, but for national growth," the letter read.
Mr Haasan paid homage to his late father, a freedom fighter who instilled in him the values of liberty, justice, and reform. "In my veins flows not just his blood, but his values - forged in the crucible of our struggle for independence, tempered by the dreams of Gandhiji, the intellect of Ambedkar, and the conviction of Periyar."
Mr Haasan launched Makkal Needhi Maiam in 2017 with a focus on clean alternative politics and development. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the party garnered around 4 per cenmt of the vote share across Tamil Nadu. In the 2021 assembly polls, he narrowly lost to BJP's Vanathi Srinivasan in Coimbatore South.
In 2024, Mr Haasan aligned with the ruling DMK, calling it "the need of the hour." Notably, a key DMK welfare scheme - Rs 1,000 monthly assistance to women - was first proposed by him during his 2021 campaign.
"I am honoured to begin with. I know I've a lot to do. Something is expected of me. I hope I live up to those expectations. I'll try my best to be honest, earnest and speak for Tamil Nadu and India," Mr Haasan told NDTV on Thursday.

CM Revanth Reddy Praises Congress' Legacy and Social Justice Efforts

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy highlighted the Congress Party's history of working for Dalit and Adivasi welfare during the party's annual legal conference in Delhi. He emphasised that Congress, which led India to independence, remains a party rooted among the people, unlike other parties such as BJP, BRS, JD, BJD, and RJD, which emerged after independence. Reddy criticised the current leadership under Modi, accusing them of neglecting social justice for the past 11 years and jeopardising the Constitution. He praised Congress for its 140-year fight for independence, its role in defeating the British, and leaders like Indira Gandhi, who fought terrorists and sacrificed for the country. He also recalled Sonia Gandhi's sacrifice in relinquishing the Prime Ministership during UPA-1, asserting the party's enduring commitment to social justice and national service.

Election Commission has become PM Modi's 'puppet': Mallikarjun Kharge

Amid a row over the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday (August 2, 2025) alleged that the Election Commission has become a "puppet" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha also accused PM Modi of seeking to divide society and said he chose to be on a "maun vrat" (vow of silence) on important issues during the auspicious month of Shravan. Addressing the inaugural event of the day-long conference on 'Constitutional Challenges - Perspectives and Pathways', he claimed the Constitution was in danger under PM Modi and the BJP rule, and asserted that it is the duty of every Congress leader and worker to protect it. "We all know that the Constitution of India is not just a legal document, but the soul of our democracy. It grants every Indian the right to justice, freedom, equality and fraternity. "But today, the Constitution is in danger. Leaders in power are talking about changing the Constitution. If the BJP had won 400 seats in the 2024 elections, they would have changed the Constitution. But this is the strength of the country's people, they gave a tight slap on the face of those who were saying '400 paar'," Kharge said. He said it is the achievement of the Congress, credit for which goes to Rahul Gandhi, who "did not abandon the Constitution and launched a campaign to save it". Claiming that 65 lakh voters were being disenfranchised in Bihar under the SIR, he said the EC "wants to take away" the voting rights of all the poor and marginalised and minorities, who would otherwise vote for the Congress as they were "fed up" with the BJP rule. Alleging that voters were "changed" in the Maharashtra Assembly elections and Lok Sabha elections, he said the Congress now has "proof" as Rahul Gandhi also explained how voters were changed in an assembly constituency in Karnataka. He said, "How can there be nine voters in a small room and nine thousand voters in a single hostel in Maharashtra? "Then you should understand this: Is this Election Commission or Modi ji's puppet?" The Congress has also been questioning the turnout figures in the Maharashtra Assembly election last year which was won by the BJP-led alliance. The Election Commission has dismissed allegations of irregularities as "unfounded". The BJP has alleged that the Congress is attacking constitutional bodies as it is unable to accept its successive defeats. At the conference, Mr. Kharge also alleged that discrimination against minorities and Dalits has become a common practice in BJP-ruled states. The Congress chief also accused Prime Minister Modi of trying to polarise society with his statements during the elections. "He always talks about chicken, Mughals, Mangal-sutra in elections and he always talks about dividing the society. The people of the country chose him and elected him to protect the Constitution, but he is working to crush it. "If anyone is crushing the Constitution, it is the Prime Minister and the BJP," he alleged. Taking on the PM, Mr. Kharge said Prime Minister Modi sits in his office after coming to Parliament and does not attend the House. "He watches the proceedings of Parliament on TV there. If you just want to watch the proceedings, come to the House and see it face-to-face. I don't understand what he is afraid of," Mr. Kharge said. Noting that a battle of ideologies is going on in the country, he said while the Congress is protecting the Constitution, the BJP is attacking it. "The soul of India is enshrined in the Constitution. It is the strength of every citizen, their right to move forward and live with dignity. We will protect the Constitution at all costs," he stressed. Claiming that the Opposition's voice was being stifled in Parliament, Mr. Kharge said former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar was used by the government to do that in the Rajya Sabha. He claimed that Mr. Dhankhar would suspend opposition MPs and not allow them to speak, but when he started asserting that he was independent, he was "threatened and pressured". He claimed that when Mr. Dhankhar allowed a notice for the Opposition's motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma, he was "threatened and pressured" by the government. The Congress president also claimed that people from the BJP said the words 'Socialist and Secular' should be removed from the Preamble of the Constitution, but the BJP has kept the words 'Socialist' and 'Secular' in the party constitution. "People from BJP-RSS cannot remove the words Socialist and Secular, because they do not have the power that the people of this country have," he said. Mr. Kharge said the responsibility of protecting democracy lies with the judiciary, the election commission and the media. But a judge used derogatory words for people of a particular religion and no action was taken against him and the government removed the Chief Justice of India from the process of appointing the Chief Election Commissioner, he said. "In such a situation, this is not democracy, but dictatorship," Mr. Kharge alleged.

US appeals court keeps bar on Los Angeles federal immigration arrests

A federal appeals court late on Friday affirmed a lower court's decision temporarily barring US government agents from making immigration-related arrests in Los Angeles without probable cause. Rejecting the Trump administration's request to pause the lower court's order, the three-judge appeals panel ruled that the plaintiffs would likely be able to prove that federal agents had carried out arrests based on peoples' appearance, language and where they lived or worked. President Donald Trump called National Guard troops and US Marines into Los Angeles in June in response to protests against the immigration raids, marking an extraordinary use of military force to support civilian police operations within the United States. The city of Los Angeles and other Southern California municipalities joined a lawsuit filed in June by the American Civil Liberties Union accusing federal agents of using unlawful police tactics such as racial profiling to meet immigration arrest quotas set by the administration. A California judge last month blocked the Trump administration from racially profiling immigrants as it seeks deportation targets and from denying immigrants' right to access to lawyers during their detention. In Friday's unsigned decision, the judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit largely rejected the administration's appeal of the temporary restraining order. The judges agreed with the lower court in blocking federal officials from detaining people based solely on 'apparent race or ethnicity,' speaking Spanish or accented English, or being at locations such as a 'bus stop, car wash, tow yard, day laborer pick up site, agricultural site, etc.' The Department of Homeland Security and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside business hours. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the order a victory for the city. 'The Temporary Restraining Order that has been protecting our communities from immigration agents using racial profiling and other illegal tactics when conducting their cruel and aggressive enforcement raids and sweeps will remain in place for now,' she said in a statement. Mohammad Tajsar, senior staff attorney at the ACLU Foundation of Southern California, welcomed the ruling in statement: 'This decision is further confirmation that the administration's paramilitary invasion of Los Angeles violated the Constitution and caused irreparable injury across the region.'
