Capital A in the final stages of PN17 exit plan

KUALA LUMPUR: Capital A Bhd is in the final stage of its regularisation plan to exit the Practice Note 17 (PN17) status, with only 15 to 20 per cent of the process remaining, expected to be completed the latest by end of July 2025, said its chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
"Building an airline was very tough, getting out of PN17 is tougher. We are on the last 15 to 20 per cent, I can see the finish line.
"I think it is an exciting time for Capital A. We just have to cross that PN17 barrier, which I think we are almost there. It is out of my control, but I think our latest target is end of July," he told Bernama today.
Capital A fell into Bursa Malaysia's PN17 category of financially distressed entities in January 2022.
Fernandes said the group is working through a few final tasks before concluding its PN17 exit plan -- among them is to finalised the proposed disposal of its entire 100 per cent stake in AirAsia Aviation Group Ltd (AAAGL) and AirAsia Bhd (AAB) to AirAsia X Bhd (AAX).
AAAGL operates passenger airline services through subsidiaries in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia.
"Our plan requires three more things to be completed. First, the Thai Stock Exchange (SET) has to agree (on the proposed disposal) -- we have a backup plan if we cannot get it agreed, but I am confident we can get it agreed.
"Second, we need five consent letters from our creditors and we already have four, and third is the RM1 billion of equity, which we have," he said.
Fernandes added that once the proposed disposal of AirAsia's aviation business is completed, the group will seek court confirmation for its capital reduction plan.
Meanwhile, commenting on Capital A's plan for potential listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX), Fernandes said its board of directors has given approval and is very serious about pursuing the proposals.
He also reaffirmed the group's intention to list its brand management arm, ABC International, on the Nasdaq in the United States.
"Once we get out of PN17, two things i can say, one is the Hong Kong listing and two, we will go back to listing the ABC International, which was formerly known as Capital A International in America," he noted.

Bursa Malaysia opens lower, bucking Wall Street gains on weak sentiment

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia opened lower on Friday, bucking overnight gains on Wall Street, as a lack of fresh catalysts and waning risk appetite weighed on investor sentiment. The FBM KLCI fell 8.10 points, or 0.53%, to 1,518.56 at 9:18 AM, after opening 4.15 points lower at 1,522.47. Overnight, the S&P 500 climbed 0.38% to end the session at 6,045.26 points. The Nasdaq gained 0.24% to 19,662.49 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.24% to 42,967.62 points. On the local bourse, Nestle tumbled 88 sen to RM75.50, Malaysian Pacific Industries slid 74 sen to RM20.28, Carlsberg fell 16 sen to RM19.46 and MISC lost 15 sen to RM7.55. Among the gainers, Hengyuan Refining Co rose 17 sen to RM1.89, Hong Leong Financial Group added eight sen to RM16.72 and Petron Malaysia Refining & Marketing gained 10 sen to RM3.84. Inter-Pacific Research noted that although the FBM KLCI continues to edge higher, market conditions remain largely insipid, lacking strong buying catalysts, as investors await further details on the U.S.-China trade developments. The research house said that until more clarity emerges, the key index may continue to dither and remain largely rangebound. This is due to a lack of fresh leads, compounded by persistently low market interest, despite recent attempts to break above the upper band of the rangebound trend around the 1,525 level. 'Consequently, further upsides could still be a challenge as investor's wait-and-see stance is likely to prevail, which could also see mild bouts of profit taking ahead of the weekend. 'For now, the supports remain at 1,520 and 1,516 points, while the hurdles are at 1,530 and 1,535 points, respectively,' Inter-Pacific said. Meanwhile, Rakuten Trade said the FBM KLCI ended marginally higher on Thursday as selective accumulation on blue chips continues.

Wall Street dips as Middle East tensions rise; Boeing drops

NEW YORK: Wall Street's main indexes slipped on Thursday as signs of rising tensions in the Middle East hurt risk sentiment and investors sought more clarity on Washington's recent trade deals with China. Boeing declined 4.7 per cent after an Air India 787-8 Dreamliner jet crashed minutes after taking off in India's western city of Ahmedabad, killing more than 200 people. Underscoring increased volatility in the Middle East, President Donald Trump said on Wednesday US personnel were being moved out of the region as it could be a "dangerous place" and the United States would not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. "The clearing out of our embassies in the Middle East of non-essential employees sends a signal that we're anticipating some turbulent times," said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners. A senior Iranian official said on Wednesday Tehran will strike US bases in the region if nuclear negotiations fail and conflict arises. China on Thursday affirmed a trade deal with the US, saying both sides needed to abide by the consensus. Traders are still waiting for more details on the trade framework discussed. At 10:06 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 140.49 points, or 0.33 per cent, to 42,725.28, the S&P 500 lost 5.58 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 6,017.36 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 39.52 points, or 0.20 per cent, to 19,576.35. Five of the 11 major S&P 500 sub-sectors fell. Communication services dropped the most, with an about 0.7 per cent decline, while utilities gained 0.8 per cent. Alphabet declined 1.1 per cent, while Nvidia nudged 0.3 per cent higher. Among other movers, Oracle shares rose 12.1 per cent after the cloud service provider raised its annual revenue growth forecast. US-listed shares of gold miners also advanced, as bullion prices hit a one-week high. Newmont gained 2.4 per cent, Harmony Gold was up 2.1 per cent and AngloGold Ashanti rose 5.2 per cent. After a tame consumer price report on Wednesday, softer-than-expected producer price data and largely unchanged initial jobless claims helped reduce investor jitters around tariff-driven price pressures. Traders are pricing in 53.7 basis points of rate cuts by year-end, per data compiled by LSEG. They are penciling in a 60 per cent chance of a 25 bps cut in September, according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool. Policymakers are widely expected to keep rates unchanged next week. With investors increasingly expecting Trump to reach favorable trade agreements with several countries in the coming weeks, the benchmark S&P 500 index is just 2.1 per cent below its record high touched in February. The tech-heavy Nasdaq is about 2.9 per cent from record levels hit in December. Goldman Sachs trimmed its US recession probability to 30 per cent from 35 per cent on easing uncertainty around Trump's tariff policies. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.35-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 2.03-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq. The S&P 500 posted four new 52-week highs and three new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 24 new highs and 39 new lows. Strengthening TVET reforms with commission set-up

MELAKA: A proposal to set up a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) commission is being mulled, in line with the broader TVET reform agenda, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said the recommendation emerged from impressive achievements under the National TVET Council chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, including a notable rise in student participation. 'I appreciate the council's work and as someone monitoring progress first-hand, there are proposals worth considering, among them establishing a commission for TVET. 'We shall assess how swiftly this can be implemented given current developments,' he said when launching the National TVET Day 2025 celebration. 'With the number of students and types of training increasing, I will look into whether current facilities are adequate and how to create synergy between government-linked companies, private sector players and existing TVET institutions.' The Prime Minister also underscored TVET's pivotal role in creating a skilled workforce capable of meeting future industrial needs. He said TVET graduates deserve a better starting salary, reflecting their skills and strong employability. 'Previously, we set the minimum wage at RM1,700. But for TVET fields with employment rates of up to 98%, such a salary is inadequate. 'We aim to increase the starting pay to RM3,000 where feasible,' he said, adding the adjustment would reflect deserved recognition by multinational and local companies. Anwar also said an additional RM40mil has been announced for the National TVET Council, along with RM10mil in aid for Melaka's TVET entrepreneurship initiatives. 'It is crucial for students to seize this opportunity to contribute to national development. 'Unlike many of our neighbours, Malaysia is one of the few nations that provides such strong support, financial and otherwise, for TVET students,' said the Prime Minister. The three-day National TVET Day includes nine sectoral exhibitions ranging from transportation, aerospace and electronics to agriculture, construction and services, with over 60 employers offering some 5,000 job opportunities.
