The June 30 board meeting was called by mayor Sunita Dayal, and the councillors with a resounding majority rejected the proposal of a property-tax hike as per the new structure, saying the tax will burden residents by multiple times.
The councillors later started protesting on July 18 seeking minutes of the board meeting which had discussed the proposal for hiking property tax on June 30.
'Since the June 30 meeting, we have been demanding official minutes. But officials were not ready to give us. On Sunday, the officials arrived and accepted three demands. They also issued a letter to this effect. So, we suspended our agitation,' said Gaurav Solanki, councillor from ward 76 of Vaishali – 1.
On Sunday, the corporation officials issued a letter to the councillors saying minutes of the meeting will be issued on July 25 and made available to the mayor by 10am. The letter also stated that hiked property tax bills being sent to the mobile numbers of the taxpayers will be stopped till further order. Also, the rebate of 20% (applicable upon payment of taxes till July 31) will be extended till September 30, and its proposal will be put in the upcoming board meeting, it added.
'The Kanwar Yatra is going on well and officials and staff are engaged in different works along with the councillors. Another meeting was held today (on Sunday) with the councillors at the corporation headquarters. The secretary of the House was instructed to take immediate action on the three demands and issue a letter to the councillors,' municipal commissioner Vikramaditya Malik said in a statement on Sunday.
A public interest litigation filed by three former councillors against the proposed hike is pending in the Allahabad high court, with the next hearing on July 29.

Cong set to corner govt as assembly monsoon session begins on Monday

Bhopal: The 12-day monsoon session of the MP assembly begins on Monday, and is likely to witness sharp exchanges, with the Congress gearing up to corner the Mohan Yadav govt on a range of issues -- from law and order and corruption to financial distress. The 12-day session will have 10 meetings. Three bills and a supplementary Budget will also be tabled during the session. Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar convened a meeting of party MLAs on the eve of commencement of the monsoon session to discuss issues to be raised and prepare a strategy with his fellow MLAs on effectively cornering the state govt on key issues. Following the meeting, Singhar said the issues like corruption in recruitment exams conducted by departments and agencies of the state govt, dispossessing tribals from the land in their possession, blatant corruption prevalent in the state, drugs abuse on the rise among youths and involvement of persons allegedly affiliated to the BJP in drugs supply, early recruitment on vacant posts, caste census in a transparent and time-bound manner and raising the OBC reservation to 27 percent are some more issues identified in the meeting on which the Congress MLAs will prominently raise during the session. The govt, on the other hand, will try to turn the tables on the Opposition citing its achievements particularly efforts of the chief minister to attract investment in the state receiving overwhelming response both in the country and abroad, which shall not only bring hefty industrial investment in the state but also create thousands of jobs, plans afoot to promote use of solar power among farmers, new medical colleges coming up, MP Sri Air Ambulance scheme for critically ill patients, procurement of summer moong from the farmers and welfare schemes being run by the state government to reach out to the poor and the needy. The principal secretary, Vidhan Sabha, AP Singh said the House would transact a lot of business during its 10 sittings. The assembly secretariat has, so far, received 3377 questions from the members, 226 call attention motions, one notice for adjournment motion and detained discussion under section 139 and 23 private members' Bill. The state government will present three Bills in the House and a supplementary budget will also be presented during the session. The assembly speaker Narendra Tomar inspected the assembly building on Sunday to take stock of preparedness for the monsoon session. When asked by media persons present on the occasion about his circular banning protests and sloganeering in the assembly premises, he said "It's nothing new". The Congress had criticised the circular saying it's an attempt to suppress the voice of dissent.

Dhankhar's exit: A cautionary tale for political ambitions

The concentration of power in the hands of the Chairman and the manner of its exercise are reflected in the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha. The suspension of opposition members, instances of switching off their microphones, and the open bias reflected in the allocation of subject matters to be raised and discussed in the House are all matters of record. The frequent public articulations of the Vice President questioning the theory of the Constitution's 'basic structure' and that the laws made by Parliament must get primacy within the constitutional framework, and reprimanding members of the House raising objections to and questioning the constitutionality of legislation initiated, are also reflected in the proceedings of the House. The Chairman's conduct, both within and outside the House, often aligned with the BJP's agenda and ideology. He frequently commented upon the necessity of enacting and implementing a legislative framework in which the power to appoint judges to the higher judiciary was vested in the government. Despite all this, the Vice President resigned on July 21, 2025, citing alleged health reasons that prevented him from continuing in office. It is pretty clear from subsequent events that the reason the Vice President resigned had nothing to do with his 'precarious' health, but rather with his actions, both known and unknown to the public. What is evident is that his announcement in the Rajya Sabha regarding the motion moved against Justice Yashwant Varma riled the government because the Lok Sabha, which was also seized of a similar motion by more than 100 Members of that House, had not dealt with it. This appears to be the trigger point for the Vice President's resignation, apart from other possible reasons that we may not be aware of. The meeting of the Business Advisory Committee held at 4:30 pm on the day of his resignation, not being attended either by the Leader of the House, or the Minister of Law & Justice, or, for that matter, the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, was an ominous signal, a precursor to what was to follow. The fact that he has not been given a farewell, and that none in the BJP visited him to inquire after his health, along with the tepid tweet from the Prime Minister, suggested that the government was no longer in a mood to tolerate him.

Monsoon session: Congress issues whip to Lok Sabha MPs for 3 days as House to debate on ‘Operation Sindoor'

The Congress has issued a whip to its Lok Sabha MPs, mandating their presence in the House for three days starting Monday, with a debate set to take place on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. The ruling alliance and the opposition are set to lock horns over the two issues steeped in national security and foreign policy imperatives. The BJP-led ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition parties are expected to field their top guns during the discussion in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. A whip has been issued by the Congress mandating the presence of its MPs in the House for three days starting Monday. Sources said Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will speak on the issues amid indications that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may make an intervention to convey his government's "robust" stand against terrorism. After the first week of the Parliament's Monsoon session ended up in a virtual washout due to opposition protests over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar and other issues, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said on July 25 that the opposition has agreed to the start of a discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha on Monday and in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. The two sides have consented to a marathon 16-hour debate in each House, which invariably stretches longer in practice.
