Smartphones before 13? Study warns of long-term mental health issues

Children who start using smartphones before the age of 13 may be at a higher risk of developing mental health issues as young adults, says a new study published in the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities.
The study is based on analysis of data from the Global Mind Project, which has surveyed nearly two million people across 163 countries.
What does the study say?
Researchers from the Sapien Labs mapped the data on young adults using the Mind Health Quotient (MHQ), a self-assessment tool that measures social, emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being, to generate an overall mental health score.
The study revealed a striking pattern - the earlier a person received their first smartphone, the worse their mental health outcomes tended to be by early adulthood.
A key finding shows that younger age groups have worse mental health than older ones, with 41 per cent of individuals in the 18–34 age group experiencing issues that seriously affect their daily lives
Forty-eight per cent of females aged 18–24 who got a smartphone at age five or six report having suicidal thoughts. In comparison, only 28 per cent of females who got a smartphone at age 13 report the same.
For males, 31 per cent who got a phone at age five or six report suicidal thoughts. This dropped to 20 per cent for those who got a phone at 13.
Age of access to social media accounted for about 40 per cent of the overall association between age of smartphone ownership and mental health.
The study also observed that in English-speaking countries, young adults got access to smartphones and social media earlier than those in Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. On average, they received their first smartphone at age 11, compared to 14–16 in other regions.
Mental health red flags
The research found that early users are more likely to experience:
Suicidal thoughts
Low self-worth
Social withdrawal
Aggressive behaviour
Children who began using smartphones at a young age were also more likely to feel disconnected from others and reported difficulty forming meaningful relationships.
The data shows that getting a smartphone before age 13 often leads to earlier use of social media, despite age restrictions. This early access is linked to higher chances of cyberbullying, sexual abuse, weaker family bonds, and poor sleep.
The experts also note that while the Covid-19 pandemic may have amplified this association, the consistency of these trends across global regions points to a broader developmental impact of early smartphone access.
Why timing matters
Experts believe that early adolescence is a sensitive period for brain development. Excessive screen time, especially on social media and messaging apps, may interfere with learning real-world social cues and coping mechanisms. Overstimulation, cyberbullying, and unrealistic social comparisons could all be contributing factors to the observed mental health issues.
Dr Tara Thiagarajan, lead author of the study, warned that the earlier children are immersed in digital environments, the greater the risk of psychological disruption down the line.
If more children keep getting smartphones and using social media at younger ages, the impact could be serious. Projections suggest that this trend alone may cause mental health issues in nearly one-third of the next generation.
A call for digital boundaries
The study says that limiting smartphone and social media use during childhood could have major benefits-
It may reduce serious mental health issues in up to 8.5 per cent of young people.
It could lower the rate of suicidal thoughts by up to 20 per cent.
It may also improve emotional resilience and self-confidence in around 12 per cent of the younger population.
Proposed policy measures-
1. Mandatory digital literacy and mental health education
Introduce compulsory lessons in schools covering online safety, cyberbullying, algorithm awareness, and predator risks. This prepares children for responsible social media use and builds digital confidence.
2. Enforce age rules and hold tech companies accountable
Ensure tech platforms follow age restrictions through better verification and penalties for violations. Like tobacco or alcohol regulations, corporate responsibility can reduce harm and ease pressure on parents.
3. Restrict social media for people under 13
Strictly enforce age 13+ rules on social platforms by blocking access on devices used by children. While verification and monitoring are challenges, this reinforces existing legal limits.
4. Limit smartphone access with safer alternatives
Delay personal smartphone access and offer basic 'kid-friendly' phones without social media or addictive content to meet communication and learning needs without the risks. Enforcement may be difficult, but the long-term benefits are significant.
What parents can do
Parents and guardians play a key role in shaping digital habits. Here are some ways to protect young minds:
Delay giving a smartphone until the teen years
Encourage outdoor play and face-to-face social activities
Set daily screen time limits
Talk openly about online experiences and feelings
Use parental controls and monitor app usage
Experts recommend delaying smartphone access until ages 14 to 18, encouraging more face-to-face interactions, and promoting screen-free routines at home and in schools.

Six-year-old Chhavi Sharma, who was affectionately called 'Bittu' by her family, was bitten by a stray dog on June 30 while going to her aunt's house in the same area. According to the family, the dog attacked her without any provocation. The family found out about the bite when Chhavi came crying and bleeding to the aunt and collapsed on the doorstep. 'We washed her wounds and immediately took her to the Dr BR Ambedkar Hospital, where her anti-rabies treatment began,' the girl's aunt, Krishna Devi, told PTI. Doctors administered her first vaccine dose and scheduled the remaining doses for July 3, 7 and 28. However, Chhavi's condition worsened by mid-July when she started vomiting while in school on July 21. That night, the six-year-old lost strength in her limbs and stopped speaking, after which the family took her to a private hospital where doctors suspected rabies. Just a few days before her final dose of the vaccine, Chhavi died on July 25. Chhavi's family alleged medical negligence from the first hospital, stating that despite the first visit, she could not even lift her hand by the second week. The family alleged that even when they kept going back, the hospital refused to pay attention. "Had they paid attention, maybe our daughter would have been alive today,' Krishna Devi said. Chhavi, who lost her mother as a baby during the Covid-19 pandemic, was raised by her paternal uncle and aunt. She brought life into the home, her family said, 'but after her death, now there is silence." Stray dogs bit at least 4 people before This was not the first incident of a dog bite. Pooth Kalan residents say that they have filed multiple complaints about the stray dogs in the area, but no one has paid any attention. According to him, more than 2.000 dog bite cases are reported in Delhi every day. Seeing the menace, MCD recently formed a subcommittee to set up shelter homes for these dogs in each city zone. "Getting your heart checked once a year is sufficient. There's no need to panic and visit hospitals out of fear," said Sharan Prakash Patil, Karnataka's minister for medical education on Tuesday. The belief that these cases are occurring only in Hassan is incorrect, Patil said.(ANI) 'The average number of heart attack cases is similar to last year,' Patil said, clarifying that there is no need to panic over the reportedly 'increasing' cases of heart attacks. 'The government is taking appropriate measures,' he affirmed. What caused panic in the state? Patil noted that after reports of a surge in heart attack cases in the state's Hassan district, patients have been swarming hospitals like the renowned Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, in Bengaluru. 'There has been a rise in people seeking preventive checks as well. This has created an unusual situation,' he added. He assured that a study is being conducted on the deaths of 24 individuals in Hassan. Further talking of the deaths in Hassan, he said that based on preliminary findings, among the 24 cases, only 10 were due to heart attacks and that the remaining were due to other causes. Does Covid-19 vaccine trigger heart attacks? Patil clarified that there is no link between the Covid-19 vaccine and the heart attack cases. 'People should not doubt the vaccine. The belief that these cases are occurring only in Hassan is incorrect,' he confirmed. 'Focus on lifestyle' Patil urged people to focus on leading a healthy lifestyle instead of being scared of heart attacks. He stressed on getting adequate sleep, and exercising regularly. 'Only those showing symptoms of heart-related illness should go for a medical check-up. Don't rush to hospitals without a reason,' he advised. Have heart attack cases increased in the state? An expert analysis led by cardiologist KS Ravindranath at Bengaluru's Jayadeva Hospital discovered that the number of deaths from heart attacks has not increased. According to a release by the authorities, in January, 178 people were admitted, with 11 deaths reported. In February, 10 out of 181 patients died, in March, 9 out of 200 died and in Bengaluru, 2,165 were hospitalised, with 101 deaths reported. Do children need screening? Karnataka health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said that there is no need for screening children for heart diseases. 'We will be organising awareness programmes through Jayadeva Hospital. We are also taking strict action on roadside food vendors and unhygienic food preparation methods,' he said. Reiterating what Patil said about a healthy lifestyle, Rao urged people to stick to traditional dietary practices. He also recommended yoga as a highly beneficial habit.
