30 students from Thiruvananthapuram to attend I-Day celebrations in New Delhi
Organised by Mera Yuva Bharat, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and Global Givers Foundation, the fifth edition of the talent hunt was in three-levels. Students participated in quiz and elocution competitions at the school level, radio jockey contests and debates at the taluk level, and reels and PowerPoint presentations at the district level. The students had to present the idea of a scheme to solve a pressing issue in the final round.
Tenth-grader Uma S from Government Girls High School Cotton Hill submitted a bottom-up method of waste management as her project, focusing on how practices from homes will end up in a cleaner country.
A Plus-I student of Government Vocational & Higher Secondary School, Pirappancode, Karthik B, suggested a scheme of regularising sanitation workers rather than maintaining them as contract-based employees.
Abhishek M Nair, an economics student from Mar Ivanios College, spoke about how the idea of a septuagenarian woman -- of turning used milk covers into furniture -- could be implemented nationally as a scheme.

Bhubaneswar/Keonjhar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded the efforts of two women-led changemaker groups in Odisha who are creating forest fire awareness through devotional music and reviving Santhali weaving, during his monthly 'Mann Ki Baat' radio address. Highlighting the deep connection between culture and conservation, the PM spoke about Radhakrishna Sankirtan Mandali, a folk music troupe from Murgapahadi village in Keonjhar district. "Have you ever heard about people being made aware of forest fires through kirtans? You may not believe it, but this amazing work is happening in Keonjhar district of Odisha. Here, there is a group named Radhakrishna Sankirtan Mandali," he said. Modi further said the troupe was working for environmental protection. "The inspiration behind this initiative is Pramila Pradhan Ji. To protect the forest and environment, she has added new lyrics and new messages to traditional songs. Her troupe travels from village to village, raising awareness against the hazards of forest fire. I never imagined that he would recognise my efforts." Divisional forest officer (DFO) of Keonjhar, Dhanraj H D, said the incidents of forest fire reduced significantly, thanks to awareness created by the troupe. "The number of fire points in Ghatagaon range reduced from 288 in 2023 to 80 in 2024 and 26 in 2025. Awareness through cultural groups, including sankirtan, has played a significant role," he added. Modi also appreciated another women's collective from Mayurbhanj district that has been quietly reviving Santhali handloom. "There is a success story in Mayurbhanj district. Here, more than 650 tribal women have given a new life to Santhali saris. These women are earning thousands of rupees every month. They are not only making clothes but also creating their own identity," said Modi. Khandu takes pride as PM hails Roing's citizen-led drive

Thanjavur scholar wins PM's praise for preserving, promoting Tamil manuscripts
Dr. Mani Maran, a 55-year-old Tamil scholar from Thanjavur, has won praise from for his work in preserving Tamil manuscripts and promoting their interpretation. The Prime Minister appreciated the scholar in his Mann Ki Baat event on Sunday, and called for similar efforts nationwide. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now For the past decade, Maran Manivasagam, aka Mani Maran, has been conducting evening classes near his house where students, working professionals, and researchers learn to read Tamil manuscripts. "I was concerned that the upcoming generation might not learn to interpret Tamil manuscripts. So, I started classes under the name 'Eadagam' to enlighten them about interpreting Tamil palm leaf manuscripts and to understand ancient knowledge," Maran told TOI. The scholar has been working in the Tamil Manuscript department of Saraswathi Mahal Library in Thanjavur for around 25 years. Maran has a doctorate in the subject 'Water Management in Ancient Tamil Literature' from Bharathidasan University. He has been collecting, researching, preserving, and digitising ancient manuscripts on history, science, astrology, medicine, and literature. On Sunday, Maran was taken by surprise as the Prime Minister spoke about him in 'Mann Ki Baat'. Modi called Maran an inspirational personality who has taken the responsibility of preserving extraordinary knowledge. "If such efforts are made across the country, our ancient knowledge will not remain confined within walls; it will become a part of the consciousness of the new generation," he said. Modi cited a govt initiative called 'Gyan Bharatam Mission' in this year's budget, under which ancient manuscripts would be digitised.
