VATICAN: A previously unseen video recorded on January 8 shows the late Pope Francis addressing young people participating in "Listening Workshops."
The initiative was founded in Italy by Luca Drusian and brings together young people and adults to discuss various topics, in hopes of exploring the beauty of being heard and listening to others.
The video was published on Sunday, a day after the late Pope's Requiem Mass, by the Italian weekly magazine Oggi ("Today").
In the video message recorded in the Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis urged young people to always "listen to your grandparents—they teach us so much."
'Dear boys and girls, one of the most important things in life is to listen—to learn how to listen," said the late Pope. "When someone speaks to you, wait for them to finish so you can really understand, and then, if you feel like it, respond. But the important thing is to listen.'
Pope Francis noted that many people are unable to truly listen to other people, since they are already formulating their response as the other person speaks.
"Look closely at people—people don't listen," he said. "Halfway through an explanation, they'll answer, and that doesn't help peace. Listen—listen a lot.'
The late Pope's video message was released as hundreds of thousands of teenagers gathered in Rome to celebrate the Jubilee of Teenagers.
Around 200,000 people came out to St. Peter's Square to attend Mass for the second day of the Novemdiales, or "nine days" of mourning for Pope Francis.
Though the Mass on Divine Mercy Sunday was in suffrage for Pope Francis, Cardinal Pietro Parolin invited young people to embrace the late Pope's teaching on mercy, so that they might discover the path to peace for their personal relationships and for the entire world.--Vatican News

For only in this way can each of us hear within the voice of the Spirit crying out: 'Abba! Father!' and then, as a result, listen to and understand others as our brothers and sisters," he said."Naturally, the more we let ourselves be convinced and transformed by the Gospel -- allowing the power of the Spirit to purify our heart, to make our words straightforward, our desires honest and clear, and our actions generous -- the more capable we are of proclaiming its message," the pope fact, he said, "the Gospel assures us that we are not alone in making our decisions in life. The Spirit sustains us and shows us the way to follow, 'teaching' us and 'reminding' us of all that Jesus said.""Pope Francis frequently encouraged us to reflect on the maternal dimension of the church and her defining qualities of tenderness, self-sacrifice and the capacity to listen," he said."We hope that those qualities will be increasingly present in the people of God everywhere, including here, in our great diocesan family: in the faithful, in pastors and, first of all, in myself," Pope Leo encouraged the Diocese of Rome's "process of listening" to the world and its communities to respond to current challenges and "to propose sage and prophetic initiatives of evangelization and charity.""I would like to express my firm desire to contribute to this great ongoing process by listening to everyone as much as possible, in order to learn, understand and decide things together, as St. Augustine would say, 'as a Christian with you and a bishop for you,'" Pope Leo asked everyone to support him "in prayer and charity, mindful of the words of St. Leo the Great: 'All the good we do in the exercise of our ministry is the work of Christ and not our own, for we can do nothing without him.'"He expressed his love and affection for the faithful of Rome "and my desire to share with you, on our journey together, our joys and sorrows, our struggles and hopes. I too offer you 'the little I have and am.'"Following the Mass, the pope appeared at the balcony of the basilica, where he briefly addressed a large crowd of people, wishing them as he did the afternoon of his election May 8, "Peace be with you."The Holy Year dedicated to hope, he said, encourages the faithful to be living witnesses of Christ's hope to the world, "a world that is suffering a lot" because of war, violence and poverty."Thank you for walking together," he said, "Let us all walk together."The pope then got in an open popemobile and headed to the patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major where he venerated the "Salus Populi Romani," ("Salvation of the Roman People"), a Marian icon in a side the prayers and final blessing, he stood and prayed at the tomb of his predecessor, Pope Francis, upon which lay a single white Leo then spoke to the people gathered outside the basilica, thanking them "from my heart" for their presence to be with their new bishop, "united as members of the Diocese of Rome."Before going to St. John Lateran for the Mass, Pope Leo also met with Rome's mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, in a brief ceremony at the bottom of the steps below city Leo said he felt the "serious but enthusiastic responsibility of serving all members" of the Diocese of Rome, "having at heart, above all, the faith of the people of God and, therefore, the common good of society.""We are partners, each in its own institutional setting," he said. And yet, as he was about to take possession of the city's cathedral, "Today I can say for you and with you, I am Roman," which was met with great May 25, the pope led a crowd in St. Peter's Square in praying the "Regina Coeli" at noon. Speaking from the window of the Apostolic Palace, the pope said, "Let us resolve to bring (the Lord's) love everywhere, never forgetting that each of our sisters and brothers is a dwelling place of God and that his presence is manifested above all in the little ones, in the poor and the suffering, who ask us to be thoughtful and compassionate Christians."--Vatican News

Chinese diocese unveils statue of Jesuit missionary Giulio Aleni

Known as 'Confucius of the West,' Aleni reached Fuzhou in 1625 and founded the Jesuit mission in Fujian Province May 21, 2025 A sketch of Jesuit priest Giulio Aleni. (Photo: BEIJING: A Catholic diocese in China has unveiled a statue of an Italian Jesuit missionary to mark the 400th anniversary of his arrival and honor his legacy in the region. The Diocese of Fuzhou unveiled the statue of Father Giulio Aleni, following a May 16- 17 seminar, the Vatican's missionary news service Fides reported on May 20. Bishop Joseph Cai Bingrui of Fuzhou unveiled the statue installed outside the Cathedral of Saint Dominic. Aleni, known as the 'Confucius of the West,' arrived in Fuzhou in 1625. He is credited with founding the Jesuit mission in Fujian Province, according to the Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Christianity (BDCC). Before reaching Fuzhou, Aleni landed in Beijing in 1613 and had started his ministry there, BDCC said. Experts from China, Hong Kong, and Italy attended the diocese-organized seminar, recalling the missionary's contributions as astronomer, scholar, geographer, and mathematician. The seminar included three presentations on Aleni and his work in China. The seminar participants also took a guided tour of places where Aleni had visited or worked in the Fuzhou area. Born in the Italian province of Brescia, Lombardy, in 1582, Aleni joined the Society of Jesus in 1610 and was sent to China three years later. After landing in Macau, he spent 40 years in China. Along with missionary work, Aleni also taught mathematics, which he considered a tool for connecting with the highest cultural circles of Chinese society, Fides reported. Aleni was the provincial of the Jesuit province of Huanan (southern China) and built more than 20 churches. He is said to have baptized some 10,000 Chinese into the Catholic faith. He died in May 1649 at Yanping, where he had taken refuge from the soldiers of the Qing court, Fides reported. His tomb is located on the Mount of the Cross in Fuzhou. Fides reported that Aleni adopted the ideas and practices followed by his Jesuit confrere Matteo Ricci, and published some twenty scientific, philosophical, spiritual, and doctrinal works. After Ricci, Aleni was considered the best expert of the Chinese language among his fellow community members. His 1628 work, The True Origin of All Things , dedicated to the question of Creation, was widely recognized and reprinted numerous times, Fides reported. In 1635, Aleni recounted the life of Jesus through the work True Exposition of the Words and Works of the Incarnate Lord of Heaven. --
