ECRL set to boost Kuantan Port as strategic trade gateway

The Star2 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: A top official of a global real estate consultancy envisages Kuantan Port to emerge as a key logistics and trade hub for Malaysia, leveraging its strategic location and connectivity via the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL).
Knight Frank Malaysia group executive chairman Sarkunan Subramaniam said that the port can be a strategic gateway linking largely underdeveloped East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia to global markets.
He said the 665-kilometre ECRL -- as a crucial land bridge spanning from Kota Bharu to Port Klang -- provides a vital overland corridor that positions Kuantan Port as a major entry and redistribution point for cargo bound for the West Coast.
"You now have a land bridge that allows goods delivered at Kuantan Port to be transported to Port Klang for re-export. This overland connectivity via the ECRL enhances Kuantan's value in the national logistics network.
"The largest port on the East Coast is Kuantan. It is not just a regional port anymore,' he told Bernama today.
When asked about calls to extend the ECRL to the Thai border, he said the proposal warrants a detailed feasibility study, especially in terms of potential economic impact and technical compatibility.
"The ECRL supports both passengers and freight, with a key cargo link between Kuantan Port and Port Klang.
"Extending it into Thailand needs to be evaluated based on whether it brings meaningful economic benefits, particularly for cargo, since passenger transport is already supported through other land links,' he added. - Bernama

Ringgit continues to retreat against greenback on profit-taking after recent gains

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit continued its retreat against the US dollar on profit-taking after recent gains to close lower on Friday. At 6 pm, the local note eased to 4.2420/2480 against the greenback from Thursday's close of 4.2340/2385. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said mixed signals from the US Federal Reserve (Fed) have also affected market sentiment, amid growing expectations for an interest rate cut. He noted that Fed officials remained divided on the timing and necessity for such a move. "Some believe inflation could remain persistent, justifying the need to maintain a restrictive monetary policy. Others, however, feel that a rate cut should happen sooner to stabilise growth momentum,' he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam also pointed out that the upcoming release of the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for July, scheduled for next Tuesday, is likely to intensify the debate among Fed members over the direction of interest rates. "The consensus estimates have pegged the inflation rate at 2.8 per cent, which is higher than 2.7 per cent in the prior month. As such, we will continue to see debate among Fed members on the direction of interest rates,' he said. At the close, the ringgit ended mostly higher against major currencies. It edged up against the yen to 2.8720/8763 from 2.8732/8765 at the close on Thursday, and improved against the euro to 4.9381/9451 from 4.9411/9463. However, it dropped versus the British pound to 5.7034/7114 from 5.6596/6656. The ringgit trended lower against regional peers. It dropped against the Singapore dollar to 3.3014/3064 from 3.2973/3013, declined against the Thai baht to 13.1173/1419 from 13.0954/1146, and was lower against the Indonesian rupiah at 260.3/260.8 from 259.9/260.3 previously. It slipped against the Philippine peso to 7.43/7.44 from 7.42/7.44. - Bernama

MATRADE Supports RM2.09 Trillion Export Target By 2030

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 (Bernama) — The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) supports the country's gross export growth target, averaging 5.8 per cent annually, to reach RM2.09 trillion by 2030. In a statement today, it said it will continue to play a strategic role in expanding global trade networks and intensifying export promotion in high-impact sectors aligned with MADANI economic principles. MATRADE chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the agency's initiatives will be coordinated to support the government's aspirations under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). "Priority will be given to strengthening the nation's export competitiveness by empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), exploring new markets, enhancing product innovation, and adapting to an increasingly complex and challenging global trade landscape by embracing digital and sustainable business models." "These efforts align with the 13MP's aspirations, which emphasise the importance of driving economic growth via increasing exports, strengthening economic inclusivity, and incorporating technology and innovation in strategic sectors," he said. Meanwhile, MATRADE chief executive officer Datuk Seri Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz said the export promotion programme focuses on key sectors such as electrical and electronic goods, halal, digital, agriculture, franchised products, and services. "These efforts also leverage MATRADE's network of overseas offices to help Malaysian companies effectively foray into international markets," he added. According to MATRADE, expanding export matching programmes, foreign market guidance, and the provision of capacity-building programmes such as seminars, workshops, and related courses will be implemented for MSMEs. It will also take strategic steps in planning export development and promotion programmes that align with government aspirations, particularly in developing high-growth, high-value industries. These include the electrical and electronics sector, games and digital animation, halal products, modern agriculture, global services and franchising.

Unlicensed Futures Trader Jailed 20 Years, Fined RM9 Mln For FCPO Fraud

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- The Sessions Court has sentenced an unlicensed futures trader to a total of 20 years imprisonment and a fine of RM9 million for unlicensed activities and derivatives fraud. The Securities Commission of Malaysia (SC), in a statement today, said that Judge Hamidah Mohamed Deril meted out the sentences yesterday after Mohd Azhidi Laili pleaded guilty to nine charges under Section 206(b) of the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007 (CMSA). It said Mohd Azhidi was sentenced to two years imprisonment and a fine of RM1 million in default three months imprisonment for each charge, with the jail terms to run concurrently. "If Mohd Azhidi does not pay the fine, he will face a further imprisonment of 27 months after the completion of his jail term," read the statement. Mohd Azhidi, who had falsely represented himself as a futures trader, committed the offences between May 2013 and March 2014 in Kuala Lumpur. "According to the facts of the case as admitted by Mohd Azhidi, he had deceived nine victims of a total of RM1.45 million for a purported futures crude palm oil (FCPO) investment scheme under AmFutures Sdn Bhd, which did not exist," the commission said. The court also sentenced Mohd Azhidi to two years' imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 58(1) of the CMSA for holding himself out as a representative of AmFutures Sdn Bhd without being licensed or registered for dealing in derivatives, and ordered the jail term to be served concurrently. Mohd Azhidi was initially charged by the SC on Feb 14, 2022, two days after his arrest, and he claimed trial to all the charges and was released on bail of RM250,000 with two sureties. He was also ordered to surrender his passport and to report to the SC's Investigating Officer once a month. "The trial proceeded from February 2023 to March 2025, after which he decided to change his plea to guilty. 28 prosecution witnesses, including seven victims, testified in court," read the statement.
