MUSCAT: The Royal Navy of Oman's (RNO) vessel Shabab Oman II left on Wednesday from Said Bin Sultan Naval Base, embarking on its seventh international voyage, 'Glories of the Seas', towards Europe.
The vessel carries the essence of Oman's rich maritime heritage and the achievements of its bright present, embodying the nation's enduring approach of fostering bonds of friendship, peace and harmony among the peoples of the world.
A formal farewell ceremony was held at Said Bin Sultan Naval Base under the auspices of Shaikh Abdulmalik bin Abdullah al Khalili, Chairman of the State Council. The event featured a visual presentation showcasing Oman's illustrious maritime history across the ages, highlighting the nation's seafaring legacy, contributions to navigation, and its role in strengthening ties between Oman and other civilisations. The Royal Oman Navy Band performed a musical display, presenting a variety of compositions.
Shaikh Abdulmalik bin Abdullah al Khalili, Chairman of the State Council, along with dignitaries, military leaders and senior guests, toured Shabab Oman II and received a briefing on the vessel, its voyage route and the national objectives of this journey. A visual presentation then highlighted the vessel's accomplishments during its regional and international voyages, as well as its role in promoting Omani culture worldwide.
Attendees also inspected the vessel's facilities and advanced maritime equipment, ensuring its readiness for the mission. The Naval Arts Team performed traditional maritime folk arts.
The ceremony was attended by several ministers, senior military and security officials, ambassadors from Arab and friendly countries, senior retired officers, military attachés and other distinguished guests.
During its seventh international voyage, Shabab Oman II will visit 30 destinations, docking at 24 ports across 15 countries. It will participate in the Bremerhaven Sail Festival, Amsterdam Sail Festival and the Tall Ships Races, along with other maritime festivals and celebrations. The six-month journey will cover over 18,000 nautical miles round trip. Accompanying the crew are 84 trainees from the Sultan's Armed Forces, other military and security services- and the Directorate-General of Scouts and Girl Guides at the Ministry of Education. The trainees will undergo a specialised programme covering sailing techniques, marine navigation, astronomy and other skills aimed at honing their practical and field capabilities. They will also help convey Oman's message of friendship, love and harmony to the world.
Shabab Oman II seeks to strengthen ties between Oman and nations worldwide by introducing Omani culture at each stop, showcasing the country's proud maritime history, ancient traditions and modern progress.
It is worth mentioning that the Royal Navy of Oman's Shabab Oman programme for sustainable peace and cultural dialogue has been recognised by the Unesco as one of the best practices for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage - an international achievement resulting from the vessel's dedicated efforts in fostering cross-cultural and civilisational communication. — ONA

Dhofar gears up for khareef with 100 tourist sites, 7,300 rooms

SALALAH, June 7 Dhofar Governorate is gearing up for its signature tourism season with a marked increase in hospitality capacity, as the number of licensed establishments reaches 100, offering 7,300 rooms, the Directorate General of Heritage and Tourism has confirmed. The expansion — driven by new hotel openings in Salalah, Taqah and Mirbat — is part of wider preparations for Khareef 2025, a key period for tourism in Oman. 'This capacity growth reflects our strategic focus on readiness and service excellence,' said Abdullah bin Omar al Sabbah Baaboud, Assistant Director of the Promotion Department in Dhofar. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, he noted, is working in tandem with stakeholders to upgrade tourism infrastructure and attract further investment into the hospitality sector. These efforts align with Oman Vision 2040, which positions tourism as a vital contributor to economic diversification and local development. According to official data, Dhofar welcomed 1.048 million visitors during the Khareef 2024 season, a 9 per cent year-on-year increase. Omani visitors surged by 70.1 per cent to over 734,500, while Gulf visitors rose 16.9 per cent, reaching nearly 177,000. Visitors from other Arab nations also posted a modest increase of 3.6 per cent. By end-2024, Dhofar had 83 licensed hotel properties offering 6,537 rooms. The additional supply — set to reach 100 hotels by summer 2025 — aims to meet rising demand and expand accommodation options for a diverse visitor base. The 2024 season also featured a significantly extended calendar of events, running for 90 consecutive days. Activities ranged from cultural showcases and family entertainment to sporting attractions such as the Salalah International Cycling Tour, drawing broad audience engagement across the governorate. The ministry implemented targeted marketing campaigns, participated in international travel exhibitions; and organised media and trade familiarisation trips. Social media outreach also intensified, partnering with regional influencers to reinforce Dhofar's profile as a leading monsoon destination. Officials expect further growth in visitor arrivals over the coming seasons, supported by continuous infrastructure upgrades and broader investment in tourism services. With Khareef tourism now a centrepiece of Dhofar's economic strategy, the governorate is on track to solidify its standing as a premier destination in the Arabian Peninsula.

A Celebration of Heritage and Friendship

The moment you stepped into the grand hall of the Sheraton Hotel in Muscat on June 4, 2025, there was an immediate sense of vibrancy and warmth that filled the air. As if the colours of over 7,000 islands had gathered in one place, the entrance was lined with stalls bursting with Filipino cuisine, each offering traditional dishes that beckoned like an invitation—aromatic, colourful, and full of stories. The lively chatter and infectious smile of Filipinos—posters, banners, and handmade crafts—created an atmosphere that felt more like a lively festival than a formal celebration. The sights and smells pulled everyone into a shared experience: a moment to honour history, culture, and ongoing friendship. This event, which brought together representatives from both nations at the Sheraton Hotel in Muscat, marked two important milestones. First, the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence—an ode to resilience, hope, and a rich cultural history rooted in shared stories of struggle and triumph. And second, the 45th year since diplomatic relations officially blossomed between the Philippines and Oman, a relationship built on cooperation, understanding, and mutual benefit. Under the patronage of His Excellency Dr Nasser Rashid al Maawali, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy of Oman, and with a delegation of distinguished officials, the event isn't just a celebration; it's a reflection of two nations that have grown ever closer across decades. Bridging Continents: 45 Years of Collaboration and Growth Looking back over the past four and a half decades, the relationship between Oman and the Philippines has expanded far beyond diplomatic courtesies. It's a journey grounded in shared economic interests, cultural exchange, and the contribution of Filipinos in Oman's development. Today, nearly 50,000 Filipinos work across Oman—teachers, engineers, healthcare workers, accountants, and service industry professionals—each one a bridge that connects the two countries through daily exchange, hard work, and friendship. Over the years, Oman and the Philippines signed several key agreements that solidified their ties. These included labour agreements ensuring the welfare of Filipino workers, cooperation in trade and investment, cultural exchanges, and collaborations in tourism. Such measures have allowed both countries to benefit from each other's strengths—Oman's strategic position and growing economy, and the Philippines' vibrant culture and human resources. In his speech, Philippine Ambassador to Oman, His Excellency Raul S. Hernandez, expressed heartfelt thanks to the Omani government. He praised Oman's ongoing support for Filipino workers and the government's commitment to maintaining a welcoming environment. Ambassador Hernandez also emphasised the importance of continuing the dialogue and cooperation to foster mutual growth, citing new opportunities that could strengthen the partnership further. A Night of Culture, Music, and Culinary Delights The highlight of this celebration was not just the speeches and formalities but the evening's programme—an immersive showcase of Filipino culture through music, dance, and food. As the night unfolded, performers from the Philippines took to the stage, revealing the rich musical repertoire that spans traditional folk songs, lively jazz, and contemporary pop. Local and overseas-based Filipino musicians, many of whom are promising talents, shared their craft, creating an electric and heartfelt atmosphere. Of particular cultural significance was the performance of "Singkil," a traditional dance rooted in the Muslim community of southern Philippines. The dance features intricate footwork, flowing movements, and the use of decorative umbrellas and waist bells. It tells a story of Queen Mantsa and her noble retinue, symbolising grace, strength, and the cultural diversity of the Philippines. Its inclusion in the programme was a deliberate effort to highlight the importance of Muslim heritage in Filipino history—an acknowledgment of the country's diversity and the unity within its different communities. Adding to the evening's vibrancy were performances by students from the Philippine School in Oman. Their participation demonstrated the enthusiasm and pride of the Filipino youth in sharing their culture and storytelling traditions with the wider Omani community—further cementing the bonds that communities help forge between nations. On the culinary front, guests were treated to a selection of beloved Filipino dishes. The aroma of crispy fried adobo, rich kare-kare with its peanut sauce, and freshly prepared lumpia drifted through the hall. Desserts like leche flan, halo-halo, and beautifully crafted Filipino sweets were shared, delighting guests from Oman and the Philippines alike. The Omani attendees, some trying Filipino delicacies for the first time, expressed their approval and eagerness to explore more. The food was not just a taste but a sensory journey into Filipino life and culture, stirring conversations and some good-natured comparisons with local Omani cuisine.
