If Rishabh Pant plays as specialist batter, then who will keep wickets for India in the 4th Test?

First Post2 days ago
Besides the stinging dilemma about Jasprit Bumrah, Team India faces a headache regarding the role of wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant ahead of the start of the 4th Test. Considering the batter sustained a finger injury during England's first innings at Lord's and did not keep wickets for the rest of the match, it is uncertain whether Pant will enter the Manchester Test as the designated keeper or if his role will be restricted to a specialist batter. Back-up keeper Dhruv Jurel filled in for him behind the stumps at Lord's. Thus, a similar case could prevail in the 4th Test.
STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
Team India successfully enforced the substitute fielder role at Lord's, and hence, Dhruv Jurel was introduced to the scene. As a proxy keeper, Jurel was decent behind the wickets, but on occasions, his inexperience was apparent. Nevertheless, the batting duty still had to be carried out by Rishabh Pant, who managed to score 74 and 9 in the match. He looked to attack and played his routine game in both innings, giving out the impression that the injury did not affect his batting. This way, both areas were effectively covered without any compromise.

Who can keep wickets if Rishabh Pant starts as a specialist batter?
As per a latest update, Rishabh Pant has not fully recovered. Therefore, there are realistic chances that he will feature at Old Trafford as a specialist batsman. In this situation, India will have to start with a new keeper, as the ICC rule does not allow any team to start the match with a substitute on the field. In this case, either KL Rahul or Dhruv Jurel, the other two options available in the squad who can keep wickets, will have to start the match as the designated wicketkeeper.
KL Rahul will be in the playing XI. Hence, he can replace Rishabh Pant as the wicketkeeper in the 4th Test. In this case, Rishabh Pant can start as a pure batter, and India can start the Test with the same XI that took the field in the 3rd Test. However, in case Dhruv Jurel comes into the XI as the wicketkeeper, then someone will have to make way for him.

India Star Out Of England Tour As Injury Troubles Continue To Mount For Team Ahead Of Manchester Test: Sources

India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is set to be ruled for the remainder of the ongoing England tour. This comes as another blow for Team India ahead of the Manchester Test, starting July 23, with pacers Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep also doubtful for the game at Old Trafford having picked up injuries while training. Sources have told NDTV that Reddy has been ruled out for the remaining matches as he has suffered a knee injury while training at the gym, with scans later revealing a ligament tear. So far, Reddy has played played two matches after missing out the opener in Leeds. His performances have been far from impressive. In the second Test at Edbaston, he scored a solitary run in both the innings and also failed to pick up a wicket. In the third Test at Lord's, with Reddy managed 43 runs across both the innings and picked up three wickets. The sources also confirmed that Reddy skipped the nets on Sunday, alongside Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar. On Sunday, the Indian players and head coach Gautam Gambhir met with the Manchester United players at the Red Devils' training facility. During the meet-up, Team India vice-captain and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant gifted a signed bat to Manchester United football team captain Bruno Fernandes. India's right-arm seamer Mohammed Siraj was also bowling to a Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire. However, Reddy was nowhere to be spotted. Anshul Kamboj has been added to the squad as an injury replacement and was spotted with the rest of the Indian team as they met Fernandes and co. Recapping the Lord's Test of the ongoing series, an unfortunate dismissal of Mohammed Siraj at the hands of Shoaib Bashir, with the ball rolling back into the stumps after a landing on the pitch, marked the end of India's stubborn resistance at Lord's, with Ravindra Jadeja left stranded following a heartbreaking 22-run loss. India lost the match despite dominating England for large parts of the game, with Jasprit Bumrah being one of the standout performers. He took seven wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings.

ICC asks USA Cricket to hold elections within three months

The International Cricket Council (ICC) at its annual conference on Saturday kept USA Cricket (USAC) on notice and asked the board to undertake comprehensive governance reforms. 'The ICC reiterated its previous position and confirmed that the organisation remains on notice. USA Cricket is required to undertake comprehensive governance reforms, including but not limited to completing free and fair elections within a three-month period,' the apex body said in a statement. The ICC had issued a notice to USA Cricket in July last year for non compliance with its governance rules, after the country had co-hosted the T20 World Cup with West Indies. The move aims at USAC getting a 'national governing body' status from the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, which is a requisite for the sport to be included at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. News reports had stated that the ICC is working towards suspending the US board, but with cricket's return to the Olympics at stake, the ICC is extending a chance to USAC to set its house in order.
