Manhunt after Dem lawmakers were targeted in their homes by gunman

Daily Mail14-06-2025
A Minnesota lawmaker was killed and another wounded early Saturday in what authorities believe were targeted attacks at the homes of Democratic state officials. State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were killed when a gunman impersonating a police officer arrived at their Brooklyn Park home at around 3.35 am, Governor Tim Walz revealed during a press briefing. 'We're here today because an unspeakable tragedy has unfolded,' Walz said. 'State Representative Melissa Hortman, a Democrat , was assassinated, and her husband Mark was also killed.'
State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also shot multiple times at their Champlin home. Both underwent surgery and remain in critical condition, Walz said. Local police, sheriff's deputies, and the FBI have launched a frantic manhunt but the shooters remain at large. At a Saturday morning press conference, officials said neither of the gunmen are in custody, but several 'people of interest' have been brought in for questioning.
Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said the suspect's vehicle contained a 'manifesto' and a list of targets, including both lawmakers, according to The New York Times. The first shooting occurred just after 2am at Hoffman's home in Champlin, about 20 miles from Minneapolis. Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times, KSTP reported. The second attack took place at around 4am at Hortman's Brooklyn Park residence, eight miles south.
After that shooting, police engaged one of the suspects in a gunfight on the street, officials said. Drew Evans, head of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, confirmed that the suspect escaped during the exchange and is still on the run. Authorities believe the two incidents are connected and involve a suspect posing as law enforcement.
Walz addressed the situation on social media, condemning the 'targeted attacks,' and adding that he is activating the State Emergency Operations Center as police launch an urgent manhunt. 'I've been briefed this morning on an ongoing situation involving targeted shootings in Champlin and Brooklyn Park,' Walz wrote on X. 'I've activated the State Emergency Operations Center. Local law enforcement in Champlin and Brooklyn Park have the full resources of the State of Minnesota behind them.'
Police described the suspect as a white male with brown hair, wearing black body armor over a blue shirt and blue pants. Brooklyn Park Police issued a shelter-in-place order around 5:30 am, later expanding it to a three-mile radius around the Edinburgh Golf Course. Another emergency alert was issued around 7 am, advising residents to only open their doors if two officers are present and to call 911 to verify any officer's identity.
'Police are looking for a suspect in multiple targeted shootings who is armed and dangerous,' the alert stated. 'Suspect is white male, brown hair, wearing black body armor over a blue shirt and blue pants and may misrepresent himself as law enforcement.' The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office confirmed that an investigation is underway and Brooklyn Park is the lead agency. Authorities yet to confirm whether the lawmakers were the intended targets or if the attacks were politically motivated. Meanwhile, other Minnesota state officials have taken to social media to share their reactions and updates about the ongoing incident.
'I'm just learning of the events that took place last night due to getting a safety alert for elected officials. I never thought we'd be here,' Mounds View Mayor, Zach Lindstrom wrote on X. 'I cannot emphasize enough that this is not ok. Any type of violence against elected officials is not ok. Any type of violence against other people is not ok.' Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar wrote on X: 'This is a stunning act of violence. I'm thankful for all the law enforcement who are responding in real time. My prayers are with the Hortman and Hoffman families. Both legislators are close friends and devoted to their families and public service.'
Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, now the head of national gun violence prevention organization GIFFORDS, said in a statement on Saturday that she is 'horrified and heartbroken by last night's attack on two patriotic public servants.' 'My family and I know the horror of a targeted shooting all too well. An attack against lawmakers is an attack on American democracy itself. Leaders must speak out and condemn the fomenting violent extremism that threatens everything this country stands for,' Giffords, who was one of 13 people wounded in an Arizona supermarket parking lot in 2011, added.

Georgia man may have tried to enter CDC campus two days before he attacked agency

The Georgia man who shot at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention buildings on Aug. 8 apparently tried to enter the campus two days earlier but was turned away by security, according to an internal CDC email. Security video indicates 'a very high likelihood' that the 30-year-old shooter — Patrick Joseph White — tried to enter the campus on the late afternoon of Aug. 6, the email said. 'The video evidence does not 100% confirm the person's identity' but law enforcement thinks it was White, according to the email sent to CDC employees on Thursday. 'The probing of a site is a common practice for individuals planning to engage in violent acts,' Jeff Williams of the CDC's security office wrote in the email. The Associated Press viewed a copy of the email, which was first reported on by Stat News. White blamed the COVID-19 vaccine for making him depressed and suicidal. On Aug. 8, he opened fire from a spot at a pharmacy across the street from CDC's main entrance. He killed a police officer and fired more than 180 shots into CDC buildings before killing himself. No one at CDC was injured. Williams, in his email, said: 'Due to our existing security protocols, the shooter did not attempt to enter campus on Friday, August 8, prior to the attack.' A spokesperson for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the investigation is active and ongoing. "We have no further information to release at this time,' said the spokesperson, Sara Lue. ___ AP reporter Jeff Amy in Atlanta contributed. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Science and Educational Media Group and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Father-of-two who was gunned down in drive-by shooting outside pizza takeaway had beaten lung cancer just six months prior, heartbroken family reveal

A father-of-two who was killed in a horrific drive-by shooting had just beaten lung cancer months before his tragic death. Dale Stogden, 50, known as Brett, had only received the all clear in February after several rounds of chemo and radiotherapy. The former security guard was gunned down outside a pizza takeaway in Wakefield on August 12. A police investigation was launched following the shooting and three men have since been charged with Brett's murder. The trio appeared before Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday, where they pleaded not guilty and were all remanded to custody. A trial date has been set for February 24, 2026. Mr Stogden leaves behind two daughters - Piper, 18, and Alyssa, 20 - who led the tributes to their father describing him as the 'kindest and the funniest person in world'. And speaking to the Daily Mail on Thursday, their former foster mother Diane Green, 60, who is raising money for Mr Stogden's funeral through a Gofundme page, described him as a 'gentle giant'. She said: 'Everyone said he was a lovely man, always smiling and everybody described him as always being happy and smiling and joking. 'He was a gentle giant. 'He was always very pleasant and polite to me over the years.' Ms Green, from Barnsley, fostered the pair in 2013 when they were seven and eight years old but is no longer living with them. 'I was the first port of call,' she said. 'They called me when the news broke. 'I was at the hospital with the girls as their support. Contrary to some reports, I was not there to identify the body. 'I always kept contact with the family, including him. She told the Daily Mail how Piper and Alyssa's relationship with their father had been evolving in the run up to his heartless murder. 'They were building a different kind of relationship, as young women getting to know their dad,' Ms Green added. 'They were going out with him for meals, breakfast and walks along the canal. 'They also enjoyed listening to music together and having movie nights. 'They were just getting to know each other.' The former foster mother also revealed Mr Stogden had just recovered from his lung cancer ordeal months before the drive-by shooting. 'Brett was diagnosed with lung cancer last year. 'Alyssa managed his hospital appointments. He was given the all clear in February this year.' She added that his daughters had been battling through after the heartbreaking news this month but were struggling to pay for the funeral. Ms Green said: 'The whole thing is unbelievable - it is not supposed to happen to your family. 'They're quite resilient young girls. They're doing their best to try to give him a fitting send off. 'It is upsetting them, organising the funeral after having to also go to the hospital and identify the body. 'It is not something you expect to be doing at that age.' In a statement, his daughters said: 'Over this last year dad battled lung cancer - Alyssa organised all of his hospital appointments and went with him to St James' Hospital in Leeds. 'He got the all clear in February and now he is gone because of one viscous cruel act. 'Our favourite memories with him were when the 3 of us went to out for breakfast he was always joking around. 'Sometimes times we would walk to the canal and sit on bench and watch the ducks whilst listening to music. 'We would have a movie night watch the Simpsons & order deserts these are treasured memories. 'Dad had the biggest heart of gold and no matter what he was going through he always had a smile on his face. 'We will always remember dad as the kindest and the funniest person in world we will miss his smile, funny jokes and the good times we had together. 'We will really miss him, his voice, his smile and his hugs especially his hugs he was a gentle giant. 'We will miss and love you forever Dad our memories will keep you close I our hearts. 'We would like to thank West Yorkshire Police for dealing with our dads death so quickly and efficiently.' South Yorkshire Police have since confirmed Marc Carter, 19, Adam Ahmed, 20, and Leyton Davies, 27, have been charged with the murder of Mr Stogden. A spokesperson for the force said: 'Police investigating the death of a man in Wakefield have charged three males with his murder. 'The charges relate to the death of Brett Stogden, who died after a shot was fired from a vehicle on Doncaster Road on the evening of Tuesday, 12 August.'

NFL has increased security at its offices following a shooting that killed 4 people last month

The NFL has increased security at its offices following a shooting last month at a Manhattan building by a gunman authorities say was targeting league headquarters. 'We are working with the building and the other tenants within the building on building security,' NFL executive Jeff Miller said Thursday. The league previously recommended enhanced security measures at team and league facilities. The recommendations will be reviewed at a special league meeting on Aug. 26. NFL employees are back in their offices after working remotely in the weeks following the shooting that killed four people and injured a league employee. Investigators believe Shane Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, was trying to get to the NFL offices after shooting several people in the building's lobby, then another in a 33rd-floor office on July 28, before he killed himself, authorities said. Police said Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested that he had a grievance against the NFL over a claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease that can be diagnosed only by examining the brain after a person dies. Tamura played high school football in California a decade ago but never in the NFL. ___
