Our 2025 running backs preview can be found below:
At the top
Buffalo Bills running back James Cook gets the hand during first half action during the Buffalo Bills divisional game against the Baltimore Ravens at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park on Jan. 19, 2025.
James Cook will once again lead the way for the Bills. Cook eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing barrier for the second consecutive season, ending the year with 1,009 yards on 202 carries. Cook was a threat in the passing game as well, catching 32 passes for 258 receiving yards.
Cook broke out, finding the end zone 18 times (16 rushing and 2 receiving) last year.
While Cook played in fewer than half of the offensive snaps last year, his efficiency when he has the ball in his hands makes him the first option out of the backfield. Cook's elusiveness from the handoff and improvements in the receiving game make him a three-down offensive weapon.

According to quarterback Josh Allen and head coach Sean McDermott, the Bills have the best third-down back in the game, Ty Johnson. Johnson doesn't put up gaudy numbers, but the veteran always seems to make things happen when the ball is in his possession. Johnson exploded against his former team, the Detroit Lions, in Week 15, catching five passes for 114 yards. In addition, Johnson made arguably the best catch of the postseason against Denver in the Super Wild Card round of the playoffs.

The Bills also have Ray Davis in the fold. A 2024 fourth-round pick, Davis is a solid depth option for Buffalo. He is a strong runner between the tackles. During his rookie year, Davis carried the ball 113 times for 442 yards and three touchdowns. The Kentucky product added 17 receptions for 189 yards and three touchdowns.
Buffalo brought back Frank Gore Jr. on a reserve/futures contract. Veteran Darrynton Evans rounds out the group. Both Gore Jr. and Evans will most likely land on the team's practice squad this year.
In 2025...
Buffalo Bills running back James Cook (4) takes a breather while the defensive line is on the field during second half of the Bills home game against the New York Jets at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park on Dec. 29, 2024.
The most intriguing offseason story centers on Cook and his contract status. Cook enters the final year of his rookie deal, and he's alluded to the type of money he feels like he deserves. At this point, it's been more of a media story than anything else, but it's still worth monitoring. Cook showed up for mandatory offseason activities throughout the summer.

On the field, expect Cook to continue his efficient play. He will play approximately half of the offensive snaps. A third consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season would mean wonders for Buffalo and Cook's wallet.
The Bills will rely on Davis and Johnson when called upon. Johnson has been a reliable and responsible third-down back, and there's no reason to believe that will change. Davis, for his part, will push for an expanded role, especially if Buffalo thinks Davis could take the reins in the backfield in the years beyond this season.

How to watch the USMNT vs. Costa Rica: Tournament legacy on the line in 2025 Gold Cup
The United States returns to the Concacaf Gold Cup quarterfinals Sunday under the dome at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, facing a depleted but familiar Costa Rica squad with tournament pedigree and a long memory. Here's how to watch as the USMNT tries to keep its tournament run on track against an old rival. Advertisement International streaming via Concacaf GO. Chris Richards was everywhere in the group stage, breaking up plays, winning headers and volleying in the match's only goal in a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia. The U.S. finished atop Group D after defeating Haiti and reminded viewers that, for all its volatility, this young squad still knows how to close. Now comes Costa Rica. These teams know each other well, and while the U.S. enters as the favorite — BetMGM has the squad listed at -175 — recent history says this fixture tends to get complicated. Costa Rica will be without striker Manfred Ugalde and winger Carlos Mora (both suspended), as well as injured attackers Ariel Lassiter and Warren Madrigal. It's a short bench, but not a soft opponent. Up front, the USMNT still lacks a clear finisher. Haji Wright remains unavailable, and no striker has fully claimed the job. Off the field, the most competitive battle may be for bragging rights in the team's Clash Royale matches. The U.S. has reached the semifinals in all but one Gold Cup since 1991. A win keeps them on script. A loss would mark just the second time in 34 years they've missed the final four. Streaming and ticketing links in this article are provided by partners of The Athletic. Former Fever Player Reveals Striking Similarity Between Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers
Former Fever Player Reveals Striking Similarity Between Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. NaLyssa Smith, who the Indiana Fever traded to the Dallas Wings in February, has the privilege of having been teammates with both Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers. Advertisement Smith played alongside Clark during the latter's historic rookie campaign last year, and the 6-foot-4 forward is now teammates with Bueckers in the former UConn star's debut season. Smith spoke to reporters on Friday ahead of the highly anticipated matchup between the Fever and the Wings, and one of the things she opened up on is the striking similarity between Clark and Bueckers. According to Smith, playing alongside two of the top young stars in the WNBA provides a similar experience for her in terms of fan reception. 'It's the same experience,' Smith said, via Nathan Baird of IndyStar. 'Going on the road, they all sound like home games, too. They're cheering loud for Paige and for the team. They're very similar environments. Advertisement 'That's why them two together in this arena — it's going to be insane.' Former Indiana Fever forward NaLyssa Smith (1) shares in an interview a similarity between Caitlin Clark and Paige McSchooler/for IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK Much like Clark did last season, Bueckers has also taken the WNBA by storm as a rookie. As Smith pointed out, the fact that Bueckers draws in hordes of fans during road games is a testament to this fact. Unfortunately, Clark and Bueckers' first meeting had to be postponed. This was after the Fever superstar was ruled out of Friday's game due to a groin injury. As Smith said, the first-ever WNBA clash between these two would be "insane," but at this point, the fans will need to wait a bit more before it finally happens. Dallas Wings Coach Issues Statement on Paige Bueckers' Injury After Big Game Against Fever
Dallas Wings Coach Issues Statement on Paige Bueckers' Injury After Big Game Against Fever originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Paige Bueckers went off for the Dallas Wings on Friday night, dropping a team-high 27 points on 9-of-18 shooting, with six assists, two steals, two blocks and two triples against the Indiana Fever. Advertisement Unfortunately for Dallas, Bueckers' offensive explosion still wasn't enough to carry them to a victory against a Fever side that was missing the services of the injured Caitlin Clark. In the end, Indiana scored a big road win against the Wings, 94-86. Bueckers, though, ended up on the sidelines on Saturday night as Dallas played in the second night of a back-to-back set. The Wings ruled their star guard out against the Washington Mystics due to a right knee injury. Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers is ruled out on Saturday due to a knee Miron-Imagn Images As it turns out, however, Wings fans need not worry about Bueckers' sudden injury absence. Head coach Chris Kolcanes spoke to reporters before the Mystics game and revealed that the issue is not serious. Advertisement "Just precautionary, some soreness," Kolcanes said, via Joey Mistretta of ClutchPoints. "Just doing our due diligence and managing what's best for her long-term health." Bueckers' absence from the Mystics game came as a bit of a surprise, considering how she looked perfectly fine against Indiana. Based on Kolcanes' statement, it appears that the decision to have her sit out on Saturday involved wanting to give the No. 1 overall pick some rest on the second night of a back-to-back. As such, barring any unforeseen setbacks, Bueckers should be back in action in Dallas' next game, which will be on Thursday against the Phoenix Mercury.
