Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that a new offensive in Gaza will be an intensive military operation aimed at defeating Hamas, but stopped short of detailing just how much of the enclave's territory would be seized.
"Population will be moved, for its own protection," Netanyahu said in a video posted on X. He said Israeli soldiers won't go into Gaza, launch raids and then retreat. "The intention is the opposite of that," he said.
Earlier, Israel's security cabinet has unanimously approved a plan to expand military operations in the Gaza Strip, an Israeli official, though the move will only be implemented after US President Donald Trump visits the region next week.
The decision comes amid ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement with Hamas, which Israel hopes to finalise before escalating its military efforts in the enclave.

Israeli navy strikes Yemen's port of Hodeidah, army says
DUBAI: The Israeli navy carried out attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen's Red Sea port of Hodeidah, the army said on Tuesday, in an ongoing campaign that usually involves airstrikes. Houthi-run Al Masirah TV said Israel targeted the docks of Al Hodeidah port with two strikes. There were no immediate reports of casualties. The Israeli army said in its statement that the port is used by the Houthis to transfer weapons. The strikes come after the Israeli military on Monday urged the evacuation of the Houthi-controlled ports of Ras Isa, Hodeidah and Salif. Since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, the Iran-aligned Houthis have fired at Israel and at shipping in the Red Sea, disrupting global trade, in what it says are acts of solidarity with the Palestinians. Israeli air strikes target Sanaa airport in Yemen Most of the dozens of missiles and drones fired towards Israel have been intercepted or fallen short. Israel has carried out a series of retaliatory strikes. Israel has severely weakened other allies of Iran in the region - Lebanon's Hezbollah and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. The Tehran-backed Houthis and pro-Iranian armed groups in Iraq are still standing.

Russia's latest drone strikes hit Kyiv, maternity ward in Odesa, Ukraine says
KYIV: Russia launched another prolonged drone attack on Ukraine, killing two people and damaging swathes of Kyiv as well as striking a maternity ward in the southern port of Odesa, officials said early on Tuesday. The overnight strikes followed Russia's biggest drone assault on Ukraine on Monday - part of stepped-up operations that Moscow said were retaliatory measures for Kyiv's recent brazen attacks in Russia. At least four people were hospitalised in the capital as a result of the hours-long attacks that hit seven of the city's 10 districts, city officials said. 'You can't break Ukrainians with terror,' Andriy Yermak, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's chief of staff, said in a Telegram post after the attacks. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for tougher sanctions on Russia and air defence to strengthen Ukraine following the attack. 'Russia rejects any meaningful peace efforts and must face new, devastating sanctions. Already now. There is no more time to wait,' he said. Air raid alerts in Kyiv and most Ukrainian regions lasted five hours until around 5 a.m. (0200 GMT), according to military data. 'A difficult night for all of us,' Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military district, said on Telegram. 'Throughout the night, the enemy relentlessly terrorized Kyiv with attack drones. They targeted civilian infrastructure and peaceful residents of the city.' The Kyiv attack sparked fires in residential and non-residential neighbourhoods and open space areas, city officials said. Reuters' witnesses heard and saw countless loud explosions shaking the city and lighting the night sky. Photos and videos posted on Telegram channels showed heavy smoke rising in the early hours of the morning in different parts of Kyiv. The scale of the attack was not immediately known. Moscow has stepped up its attacks on Ukraine following Kyiv's strikes on strategic bombers at air bases inside Russia on June 1. Russia fired record 479 drones at Ukraine overnight Moscow also blamed Kyiv for bridge explosions on the same day that killed seven and injured scores. The attacks come despite pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump on both sides to move towards a resolution on the war. Moscow and Kyiv returned to negotiations for the first time in more than three years, but outside an agreement on the exchange of war prisoners, there has been no tangible progress. In addition to swarms of drones and missiles launched in recent days, Russia has also been advancing further on the ground along the frontline in eastern Ukraine, claiming on Tuesday to take more territory there. In the southern port of Odesa, a 'massive' overnight drone attack targeted an emergency medical building and a maternity ward, as well as residential buildings, Oleh Kiper, governor of the broader Odesa region, said on Telegram. Two men were killed in the attack, and nine people were injured, according to the Ukrainian prosecutors. Patients and staff were safely evacuated from the maternity hospital, Kiper added. He posted photos of broken windows in what looked like a medical facility and of damage to the facade of several buildings. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war. But thousands of civilians have been killed in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian.

Israeli forces seize Gaza aid boat carrying Greta Thunberg
OCCUPIED JERUSALEM/ASHDOD: Israeli naval forces boarded and seized a charity vessel carrying Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, which had tried to break the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip on Monday. The British-flagged yacht, Madleen, which is operated by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition, had aimed to deliver a symbolic amount of aid to Gaza later on Monday and raise international awareness of the humanitarian crisis there. 'If you see this video, we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by Israeli occupational forces or forces that support Israel,' Thunberg, 22, said in a video released by the FCC, filmed before the vessel was captured. 'I urge all my friends, family and comrades to put pressure on the Swedish government to release me and the others as soon as possible.' The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed that the vessel was under Israeli control. Israel has called Thunberg an 'antisemite' and dismissed the aid ship as a stunt. 'The 'selfie yacht' of the 'celebrities' is safely making its way to the shores of Israel. The passengers are expected to return to their home countries,' the ministry wrote on X. All passengers were safe and unharmed, it later added: 'They were provided with sandwiches and water. The show is over.' Rima Hassan, a French member of the European parliament who was also on board, posted on X that the crew had been 'arrested by the Israeli army in international waters around 2 a.m.' A photograph showed the crew seated on the boat, all wearing life jackets, with their hands in the air. Israel's foreign ministry later distributed a photo showing Thunberg in a green hat and orange life vest, smiling while a soldier held out a sandwich. CREW ARRESTED The yacht is carrying a small shipment of humanitarian aid, including rice and baby formula. The Foreign Ministry said it would be taken to Gaza. 'The tiny amount of aid that was on the yacht and not consumed by the 'celebrities' will be transferred to Gaza through real humanitarian channels,' it wrote. The Swedish foreign ministry said it was in contact with Israeli authorities. 'Should the need for consular support arise, the Embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will assess how we can best help the Swedish citizen/Greta Thunberg resolve her situation,' a Swedish Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in a written statement to Reuters. French President Emmanuel Macron's office said the president has asked Israeli authorities to release the French nationals on board as soon as possible. The French and Spanish foreign ministries said they had requested consular protection for their citizens aboard. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz ordered the military on Sunday to prevent the Madleen from reaching Gaza, calling the mission a propaganda effort in support of Hamas. Katz said he had instructed that upon the boat's arrival at Ashdod port, the activists will be shown videos of atrocities committed during the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, which triggered the Gaza war. Hamas condemned the seizure of the boat as 'state terrorism' and said it salutes its activists. Israel has imposed a naval blockade on the coastal enclave since Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007, saying it aims to stop weapons from reaching the militant group. The blockade has remained in place through conflicts including the war which began when Hamas-led militants rampaged through southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing more than 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, by Israeli tallies. Israel's retaliatory offensive against Hamas has since killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, according to health officials in Hamas-run Gaza, and destroyed most of the homes of its 2.3 million residents. At the start of March this year, Israel also sealed off Gaza by land, letting no supplies in for three months, arguing that Hamas was diverting aid. Over the past two weeks it has let in some food to be distributed by an Israeli-backed group. Scores of hungry Palestinians have been killed trying to reach it. The United Nations' special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has supported the FFC operation and on Sunday, urged other boats to challenge the Gaza blockade.
