Bluesfest Day 9: Kaytranada spins a chill DJ set to wind down the fest

Kaytranada closed out the 31st edition of Bluesfest on Sunday with a solo DJ set that wound down the nine-day party with a chill vibe that was not too heavy, not too loud and fully danceable.

With about 10,000 in attendance, it wasn't a massive crowd by Bluesfest standards, especially for an artist who pulls in many millions of views on his YouTube channel. But as the only electronic headliner on this year's program, he had the attention of a demographic that came dressed for the dancefloor, which, in this case, was the rain-dampened dirt in front of the Canadian War Museum.

The Haitian-born Montrealer, aka 32-year-old Louis Kevin Celestin, didn't talk much as he conjured a groove-driven set, his surging bass lines dripping with hip hop-laced beats, and often topped off by the ethereal sound of angelic vocals floating overhead.

Add a non-stop barrage of strobe-powered lights pulsing to the beat and a closing blast of fireworks, and it was a blissful night for the throngs of fans dancing together on the plaza, including a handful of young women on their boyfriends' shoulders.

The instrumental jam band of Canadians barely noticed the change in weather. They were focused on unravelling some intense grooves to warm up the dancers for Kaytranada, and drummer Alexander Sowinski was urging everyone to get loose and shake it out.

'We came to take you on a ride,' Sowinski declared, giving a special shoutout to the band's friends and family in the audience. Turned out it was a homecoming for their Ottawa-born bassist, Chester Hansen, a Canterbury grad.

The ride was a musical one that took us down into the funky depths, over a tapestry of jazz and up into the psychedelic atmosphere, with a wonderful salute to the rhythms of Brazil along the way.

When the rain hit, Sowinski and his cohorts got even deeper into it, gaining momentum with the increasingly heavy precipitation. Most of the audience scattered in search of shelter in the museum, but a devoted bunch stuck it out to shake and shimmy in the rain.

MuchMusic launches interview archive on new YouTube channel

A deep library of MuchMusic's celebrity interviews has found a new home on YouTube. Bell Media says Much Rewind launched last week as the official public archive of pop-culture moments that once aired on the nation's music TV station. So far, the collection is slim, with little more than a handful of interviews that include pop singer Christina Aguilera, rappers Missy Elliott and Eminem, and late R&B singer Aaliyah. But MuchMusic head Dave Krikst expects that number to grow, with fresh uploads of old interviews each week. "What it is, at the moment, is great interviews. What it will be, I think, is to be determined," Krikst said Friday. "What we wanted to do is start slow." Much Rewind arrives years after MuchMusic fans began calling for its media owner to dig into its vast treasure trove of footage, which includes 45,000 archival tapes, and rescue clips that have languished since Much effectively stopped operating as a music TV channel. Since then, many viewers have uploaded copies of their grainy VHS tapes to YouTube and created a publicly sourced archive. The official YouTube channel features digitized footage that often looks better than it did when it originally aired on MuchMusic. Still up in the air is whether musical performances might appear in the archive. Bell Media has wrestled with Canadian record labels over fair-use rights for songs featured in some of its archival footage, which is the main reason a documentary on MuchMusic was pulled from its Crave premiere last year and has yet to materialize. Krikst said he hopes Much Rewind will eventually host footage of musicians who played live at MuchMusic's Toronto studio. He said he's presently in talks with Universal Music Canada to upload a performance by the Tragically Hip. Until those details are ironed out, sit-down interviews are the main content. Most of the archival footage appears raw and unedited, which is not usually how interviews aired on MuchMusic, where the conversations were edited and interspersed with music video clips. The six uncensored interviews uploaded as of July 28 involve chats between Much VJs and era-defining stars of the '90s and '00s. Master T asks late R&B singer Aaliyah about making music with R. Kelly, who's now serving 30 years in prison time after being convicted of sex trafficking and racketeering. WATCH | An interview with late R&B singer Aaliyah on Much Rewind: VJ Bill Welychka settles down with the notoriously prickly Oasis brother Noel Gallagher for his foul-mouthed take on why the musician thinks Robbie Williams and the Spice Girls lack talent. On the more unexpected side of the time capsule is Gwen Stefani's conversation about her debut album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. It unfolds as the No Doubt singer is nestled on a couch surrounded by the Harajuku Girls, her backup dancers at the time, who are frozen in poses for the duration of the 40-minute interview. "We wanted to get some of the great interviews, wild interviews and entertaining interviews up," Krikst said. He added that Much Rewind will aim to react to news events of the week as best it can. For instance, after rock star Ozzy Osbourne died on Tuesday, his team began looking into whether they could draw on his past MuchMusic interviews and post them in the coming days. Ultimately, Krikst hopes Much Rewind becomes a reliable source for historic moments. Shorter clips from some interviews will be posted on Much Rewind's Instagram and TikTok accounts, while Much's current crop of VJs may also take a more active role in contextualizing some of the footage. "I think some of that's just going to be organic," Krikst said.

Published by Scholastic Canada in partnership with the Fox Family, new alphabet picture book supports cancer research in Canada TORONTO, July 28, 2025 /CNW/ - Today, on what would have been Terry Fox's 67th birthday, the Fox Family and Scholastic Canada are releasing a new picture book T is for Terry: An ABC of Courage. Launched as part of the year-long celebration marking the 45th anniversary of Terry's Marathon of Hope, this beautifully crafted book brings his extraordinary dream to life for young readers—one letter at a time. Written by Denise Dias and illustrated by Noémie Gionet Landry, T is for Terry captures the essence of Terry's inspiring journey through a heartfelt and hopeful alphabet. "Each year, more than 10,000 schools across Canada participate in the Terry Fox Run, demonstrating just how deeply Terry's story continues to resonate with young Canadians," says Jessie Alder, Terry's niece. "With T is for Terry, we're excited to offer families another meaningful way to share his legacy and to foster a spirit of courage and generosity from an early age." Readers will learn how the loss of Terry's leg became the spark for his mission to help others, the unwavering love and support he received from family, friends, and Canadians across the country, and the unforgettable symbols of his journey—the van, his iconic shoes, and his unshakable determination. "Writing this book gave me the opportunity to reflect deeply on Terry's legacy and the values he stood for," says Denise Dias, author of T is for Terry: An ABC of Courage. "My hope is that as young readers explore Terry's story through letters of the alphabet, they'll feel inspired and understand that they too can make a difference in the world." To celebrate the launch of T is for Terry, the Terry Fox Foundation is hosting a free, family-friendly community event on Monday, July 28, 2025 at 1:00 pm at the Scarborough Civic Centre—the historic site where Terry spoke during his Marathon of Hope in 1980. The celebration will include remarks from special guests, including members of Terry's family, a book reading and signing, and a variety of fun, educational activities for kids, such as face painting and colouring, designed to share Terry's inspiring story with a new generation. Already selected as an official 'Heather's Pick' at Indigo, T is for Terry: An ABC of Courage is available now, in both English and French, at book retailers and e-tailers across the country. All royalties will be directly donated to the Terry Fox Foundation, supporting ground-breaking cancer research in Canada to help finish the marathon against cancer that Terry started.
