Africa's premier surf festival returns to Ballito for 56th edition

The Citizena day ago

The countdown is on as Ballito prepares to host Africa's biggest surf and lifestyle festival – the iconic Ballito Pro.
The official launch took place at a media and sponsors' breakfast at Fiamma Grill last Friday.
Presented by O'Neill, the festival has been held in Ballito since 2009, originally starting in Durban in 1969. The world's longest-running professional surfing contest will run from June 22 to July 6 at Willard Beach. This year marks the 56th edition of the festival, themed 'sea.sound.waves' to honour the unifying power of sport and music.
'This year's theme takes its inspiration from the positive energy produced by the ocean and sound waves,' said event organiser Collette Bundy.
The 15-day festival will feature a variety of sporting, leisure and music events. Bundy said the Ballito Pro generates an estimated R40-million boost to the local economy.
'It is important to create economic opportunities for local businesses and the community,' she added.
KwaDukuza mayor Ali Ngidi echoed these sentiments, welcoming guests from across South Africa and the world.
'It is important to showcase KwaDukuza's tourism potential to investors and highlight the beauty of our region,' he said.
The surfing kicks off with Rookie Rippers, an U12 to U18 boys' and girls' surf competition from June 22 to 24.
The Ballito Pro Junior (June 25-26) will see rising stars compete for the World Surf League (WSL) Africa Junior Qualifying Series (JQS) men's and women's titles.
The Ballito Open, now a QS 2 000 ranked event, runs from June 27 to 29, while the main Ballito Pro Challenger Series is set for June 29 to July 6.
Some of the world's best surfers will line up in Ballito this year, including South African Olympian and Championship Tour (CT) regular, Matthew McGillivray. He will be joined by eight other CT surfers in the men's draw, while former winners Sarah Baum and Sally Fitzgibbons, among others, will thrill on the women's side.
O'Neill brand director Paul Canning said one of the most recognisable features of the Ballito Pro is its unique annual themes.
'The Ballito Pro is the highlight of our year and I'm grateful to be involved as a sponsor. We appreciate KwaDukuza's support in showcasing surfing,' he said.
Additional highlights include the Ballito Skate Jam on June 28 with R30 000 in prize money, and the much anticipated Corona Free Concerts, from July 2 to 4.

Highland glory on display at Pretoria high school

Pretoria Boys High School was transformed into a scene from the Scottish Highlands this weekend, as it played host to the annual Pretoria Highland Gathering – a day bursting with tradition, music, and festive flair. Pipe bands from across South Africa descended on the school's historic grounds, dressed in full regalia, to compete in stirring performances that echoed across the lawns. Residents were treated to a colourful craft market and a smorgasbord of food stalls that satisfied every craving, while kids enjoyed dedicated activities and Highland dancing displays. The rhythm of bagpipes was matched only by the buzz of excitement from the crowd. Attendee Belinda Ormiston, who travelled from Johannesburg, said she came to cheer on her son, a member of the King Edward VII (KES) pipe band. 'I did want this special moment for both of us, and I hope they will win,' she said at the time. Reabetswe Taele from Ekurhuleni, a proud member of another competing band, praised the warm hospitality. 'Pretorians are so welcoming, and I would come to compete again. All the pipe bands here are the best, and I wish them all the best of luck,' she said. In addition to the musical spectacle, attendees explored a dazzling car display by the Pretoria Old Motor Club, an art and photography exhibition, and relaxed in the beer and tea gardens. The day reached its emotional peak with the Massed Pipes and Drums, a breathtaking finale that united all bands in a stirring show of unity and sound. Kaizer Chiefs re-visit interest in R9-million Sundowns Bafana star!

Kaizer Chiefs are once again interested in signing this Mamelodi Sundowns man. Kaizer Chiefs are planning to raid PSL champions and rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns for players. Amakhosi now have SIX Sundowns players on their radar ahead of the 2025/26 season. Furthermore, they are now re-visiting their interest in this R9-million Masandawana player. Terrence Mashego is once again on Amakhosi's radar. However, this time Chiefs have a very good chance of securing the Sundowns defender. This is because he was excluded from Sundowns Club World Cup squad. So, this is a clear indication that he is not in Portuguese coach, Miguel Cardoso's future plans at the club. Now, Chiefs have identified him as one of their main transfer targets, acccording to Phakaaati. 'With Chiefs now prioritising reinforcements on the left side of their defence, sources close to the club suggest Mashego is high on their shortlist. His absence from Miguel Cardoso's Club World Cup squad may be the clearest indication that he's not in the coach's plans,' the publication reported. Meaning, Chiefs have their best chance of signing their Sundowns target so far. Meanwhile, he needs regular gametime to revive his national team ambitions. Mashego was a part of Bafana Bafana squad that claimed Bronze but has struggled to return to the national setu p following due to lack of playing time at Sundowns. Therefore, a move to Chiefs will be in the best interest of both parties involved with the Soweto giants in the market for some recruitments at the back. According to Transfermarkt , Mashego is valued at over R9 million. Meanwhile, these are the most expensive and valuable Sundowns players.
