Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said that the media has played a crucial role in nation-building from the time of independence to the present day. Appreciating the dedication of media persons who base their writing on the national interest, he said that freedom of the media is a pillar of a strong democracy and reflects the positive vision of Prime Minister Sh Narendra Modi.The Chief Minister was speaking as the chief guest at the annual convention of the Haryana Union of Working Journalists, held on Friday in Rohtak.
On the occasion of Hindi Patrakarita Diwas (Hindi Journalism Day), he extended his congratulations and best wishes to all media persons and saluted the 'sentinels of the pen.' Haryana Education Minister Sh Mahipal Dhanda, former Minister Sh Manish Grover, and Baba Kapilpuri Ji Maharaj were present as special guests. The Chief Minister formally inaugurated the convention by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Meanehile, Member, Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC), Bhupender Chauhan said that to assist candidates applying for CET 2025, the commission has launched a special helpline service. He said that candidates can call the mobile number 9063493990 to get any information related to CET registration.

The Madras high court on Tuesday said the fundamental right to privacy is not absolute and that the state has to prevent social harm, as it dismissed petitions challenging the Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority (Real Money Games) Regulations, 2025. Online gaming companies challenged the regulations, mandating a 'blank hour' midnight to 5am ban on gaming and an Aadhaar-based user verification system. A bench of justices SM Subramaniam and K Rajasekar said the regulations amounted to 'reasonable restrictions' that govern all fundamental rights. It added that a user's fundamental right to privacy cannot be considered absolute and needs to be balanced with public interest. 'When put on a scale, public interest overweighs the right to privacy,' the bench said as it read out the operative part of the judgment. The ruling reinforces the state's authority to regulate online gaming, particularly real money games, to prevent social harm and protect vulnerable users. It could set a precedent for other states grappling with the potential for addiction and negative social consequences associated with online gaming. The ruling potentially empowers states to implement similar regulatory measures to safeguard health and well-being, even if it means limitations on the operational freedom of online gaming companies and users. The court reserved its order on April 30, saying the state government can 'step in' if online real-money games were addictive and caused social harm, provided the regulations balanced the fundamental rights of users and gaming companies. Senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi and Sajjan Poovayya, representing gaming companies that offer online real-money games, opposed the regulations. They argued that the Union government already regulated such games. The lawyers said the Tamil Nadu government was trying to indirectly prohibit online gaming under the guise of protecting users from addiction. Online gaming platforms, including Play Games 24x7, Head Digital Works, and Junglee Games India, particularly opposed provisions prohibiting users under 18 from playing real-money games, 'know your customer' registration with Aadhaar for opening gaming accounts, and ban on playing during 'blank hours'. The gaming platforms challenged the rule mandating compulsory pop-up caution alerts, including those cautioning that online games are 'addictive.' The state government defended the regulations, citing alarming levels of addiction to online gaming. It said that users often included minors and that addiction was ruining their health.

Devdutta Majhi from West Bengal's Katwa secures top rank among girls in JEE (Advanced)
Devdutta Majhi from West Bengal's Purba Bardhaman district emerged as this year's top-ranked female candidate in the common rank list (CRL) of JEE (Advanced) 2025, with an overall rank of CRL 16. Ms Majhi, who topped from the IIT Kharagpur zone, obtained 312 marks out of a total of 360. In this year's JEE (Mains) examination, she had also secured a top rank in the Session 2 Paper 1 (BE/BTech) with a perfect 100 percentile score. 'I am very happy with the results. I had a good feeling after the examination, I knew it went well. I love mathematics a lot, so I want to join the BTech course for maths and computing at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore,' Ms Majhi told The Hindu on Monday. She added that her second choice would be the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. 'For my preparation, I did not join any particular coaching institute. I would study diligently at home, and I appeared for several mock tests for practice,' Ms Majhi said. Ms Majhi has a proven record of academic excellence. A student of Katwa Durgadasi Chaudhurani Girls' High School in Purba Bardhaman district, she ranked sixth in the State in this year's class 12 board examination conducted by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education. In 2023, in the class 10 Madhyamik board examination conducted by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, Ms Majhi had secured the first rank in the State by scoring 697 out of 700 marks. Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, took to social media to congratulate Ms Majhi. 'Today's JEE Advanced 2025 examination results show that you have been topper among all girls in the entire country, and the highest rank holder in the IIT Kharagpur zone. You achieved top ranks in our Secondary and Higher Secondary examinations earlier, and now you are the topper girl of India!' Ms Banerjee wrote. Despite many girl students proving their merit in these pan-India entrance examinations, the gender ratio among students, particularly in the IITs, remains largely skewed. According to the Union Ministry of Education's response to a question in the Lok Sabha in 2023, the government had decided to push for female representation in IITs by increasing their enrollment in the IITs' programmes from 8% to 14% in 2018-19, 17% in 2019-20 and 20% in 2020-21 through supernumerary seats. Furthermore, the Central government also encouraged the institutions to improve their gender ratio through special scholarships for female students, counselling activities for JEE (Advanced)-qualified female students, special open house outreach programmes for female high school students to encourage them towards Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), etc.

J-K DGP reviews security arrangements for Amarnath Yatra, Eid-Ul-Adha and upcoming events
Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 2 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir (J-K) Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat, on Monday, chaired a joint meeting with officers from the Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) at Police Control Room Kashmir to review the security arrangements for the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra-2025, Eid-Ul-Adha and other upcoming events. At the onset of the meeting, the participating officers briefed the chair regarding the proposed security arrangements for the conduct of Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra-2025 and the upcoming Eid-Ul-Adha, emphasising the significance of effective coordination among the various forces. According to a release, during the meeting, J-K DGP issued directions for implementing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and also emphasised the importance of proactive measures in mitigating risks and ensuring the safety and security of the participants. He also directed the field officers to intensify their efforts to dismantle the terror ecosystem, ensuring robust security arrangements for the upcoming events. DGP instructed the officers to bolster security measures and mitigate potential risks by deploying Anti-Sabotage teams along the yatra routes. He also directed the officers to enhance surveillance and threat detection capabilities by utilising advanced technologies and real-time monitoring. The meeting concluded with a resolve to ensure the highest level of preparedness and coordination for the smooth and successful conduct of all the events. The meeting was attended by Spl. DGP Coord. S.J.M Gillani-IPS, ADGP Armed, Anand Jain-IPS, IGP Kashmir, IGP POS PHQ J&K, IG CRPF Srinagar, IG CRPF KOS, IG BSF, all range DIsG of Kashmir Zone, DIG Pers, DIG Traffic Kashmir, DIG IR Kashmir, DIG AP Kashmir, DIG SSB, DIG ITBP, all district SSsP of Kashmir Zone and other senior officers. Shri Amarnathji Yatra is scheduled from July 3 to August 9. As the sacred yatra approaches, coordination between departments, early security deployments, and structured logistical planning are being emphasised to ensure the safe passage and spiritual experience of every pilgrim heading to Baba Barfani's darshan. The holy festival of Eid al-Adha, also known as the 'festival of sacrifice' or Greater Eid, is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic or lunar calendar. This year, the festival is likely to be celebrated on June 7. Eid al-Adha is the second Islamic festival of the year and follows Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. The date changes every year, as it's based on the Islamic lunar calendar, which is about 11 days shorter than the Western 365-day Gregorian calendar. It is celebrated as a commemoration of Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice everything for God. (ANI)
