India should position weddings, MICE as niche tourism segment: Govt official

Kochi, Aug 15 (PTI) India should focus on promoting weddings and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) as a niche tourism segment rather than grouping it under general tourism development, a senior Union Tourism Ministry official said here on Friday. Delivering the keynote address at what was claimed to be the country's first Wedding and MICE conclave, Additional Secretary and Director General of Tourism Suman Billa said Kerala had strong potential to emerge as a leading venue in this category, according to a government release. He suggested that the wedding and MICE segment should ideally have separate microsites on the country's leading tourism portals to bring its immense scope into sharper focus, the release said. The three-day conclave, which began here on Thursday evening, is being organised by the Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) Society in association with the state tourism department. Billa said Kerala stood to benefit greatly from the sector's growth due to its inherent advantages. 'The state has excellent ambience and infrastructure, and the need of the hour is convergence by linking the dots to usher in a synergy," he was quoted as saying. He claimed Kerala had a potential business opportunity worth Rs 1 lakh crore in wedding and MICE tourism. Billa also praised the state government's decision to go beyond conventional tourism strategies and diversify into wedding and MICE. Kerala's green-friendly policies and its widely acclaimed Responsible Tourism model have helped the state renew its reputation as a global destination, he said. He further said the recent US imposition of steeper tariffs on India was unlikely to affect its status as the world's fastest-growing major economy. The summit has attracted over 675 buyers, including 65 from abroad, representing countries such as the UAE, UK, USA, Germany, Australia, and Brazil. Seventy-five exhibition stalls have been set up for sellers. PTI HMP SSK view comments First Published: August 15, 2025, 21:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Spanish Influencer Couple Misses Puerto Rico Trip After Following ChatGPT For Visa Advice

Last Updated: Spanish influencer Mery Caldass and her partner Alejandro Cid missed their Puerto Rico trip due to relying on ChatGPT for visa info. They needed an ESTA, not a visa. Spanish influencer Mery Caldass and her partner, Alejandro Cid, saw their planned romantic getaway to Puerto Rico end before it even began — all because they relied on a chatbot for the final word on their travel documents. Mery, an influencer who shares her travels and lifestyle with thousands of followers, decided to speed up her pre-trip research by asking ChatGPT if they needed a visa. The answer was a simple 'no", which seemed clear enough. But that nuance was missed. For Spanish passport holders — and others from countries in the US Visa Waiver Program — 'no visa" doesn't mean 'no requirements." Travellers must still apply online for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) before boarding a flight, NDTV reported. Believing they were fully prepared, the couple went ahead and booked flights, hotels, and activities. Everything was set until the airport check-in counter became the scene of an abrupt reality check. Without an approved ESTA, boarding was not an option. Later, Mery shared a video on TikTok and YouTube the next day, showing her visibly upset, walking through the terminal while Alejandro tried to calm her down. 'I always do a lot of research, but I asked ChatGPT, and they said no," referring to the visa requirement, she shares on her video. She even joked that the chatbot might have been getting back at her: 'Don't trust that one anymore — sometimes I insult him. I call him a bastard, tell him he's useless, but ask him to give me good information… maybe this was his revenge." The video quickly went viral, attracting thousands of views and sparking heated debates in the comments. According to the New York Times post, some criticised the couple for relying entirely on AI instead of double-checking official travel information. 'If you're crossing an ocean and base your entire trip on what a chatbot says, you're already asking for trouble," wrote one user. Others were more sympathetic, noting that the response wasn't entirely wrong — just incomplete. They suggested the confusion may have stemmed from how the question was phrased. Puerto Rico is an unincorporated US territory, meaning it follows the same immigration rules as the mainland. Nationals from Visa Waiver Program countries, such as Spain, don't need a traditional visa, but they must still complete an ESTA application before travelling. This requirement applies even if the trip is only to Puerto Rico, and airlines will not allow passengers to board without it, as entering US territory without authorisation is illegal. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Dreaming Of Working From Seoul? Here's How To Get South Korea's Workation Visa

The South Korean workation visa allows digital nomads to work in the country for two years. However, the rules make it super exclusive. If your idea of the perfect workday is answering emails from a Han River café or brainstorming ideas while surrounded by Seoul's neon-lit streets, South Korea 's F-1-D Workation Visa, popularly called the Digital Nomad Visa, could turn that dream into reality. Launched on January 1, 2024, as a pilot programme, this visa lets foreign professionals live in South Korea for up to two years while working for overseas companies. But there's a catch: the requirements are strict, the income threshold is high, and not everyone will qualify. The Basics: How South Korea's F-1-D Visa Works The visa is granted for one year initially, with the option to extend for another year, allowing a maximum stay of two years. Processing usually takes 10–15 days, though delays are possible. Key requirement: You must earn over USD 66,000 a year (about Rs 58 lakh) – roughly double South Korea's per capita GNI. This ensures the visa is aimed at high-earning professionals and entrepreneurs. Who Can Apply For South Korea's Workation Visa? To be eligible, you must: Be 18 years or older Have at least one year of experience in your field Be employed by a company outside South Korea or run your own overseas business Work exclusively remotely (no local jobs or profit-making in Korea) Have employer approval to work abroad Hold medical insurance covering at least Rs 83 lakh for treatment and repatriation, valid for your stay Documents for Indian Applicants You'll need: Completed visa application form with photo Passport with 6+ months validity Employer letter confirming your role is remote Proof of income (salary slips, tax returns, bank statements) Indian criminal record certificate (apostilled/notarised) Criminal records from other countries lived in for 1+ years in the last 5 years Medical insurance meeting the coverage rules How and Where to Apply For South Korea's Workation Visa Indians can apply through South Korean embassies or consulates in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, or Kolkata. Tourists already in Korea can apply at local immigration offices. 1. Check your eligibility. 2. Gather and translate/apostille documents. 3. Book an appointment at your nearest consulate. 4. Submit your application with the USD 45 fee. 5. Wait for processing (no express option). 6. Once approved, enter Korea and get an Alien Registration Card within 90 days. Spouses and children under 18 can join you with proper documentation. The visa does not lead to permanent residency. Once the two years are up, you must leave or change your visa type. For high-income Indian remote workers, the F-1-D is more than a visa – it's a two-year pass to experience K-culture, explore historic cities, and work against a backdrop of mountains, temples, and high-speed tech.
