Kolkata: Days after CM
Mamata Banerjee
raised objections to the Election Commission's (EC's) new voter roll guidelines, a five-member Trinamool delegation on Tuesday met EC officials at the poll body's headquarters in Delhi and submitted a memorandum outlining multiple concerns, and said the new directives could pave way for exclusion and manipulation of voter lists ahead of the 2026 assembly elections in Bengal.
The delegation included Kalyan Banerjee, Firhad Hakim, Chandrima Bhattacharya, Arup Biswas and Prakashchik Baraik. At the meeting, it questioned recent circulars mandating birth certificates of voters' parents and other documents as part of the special summary revision. The party called the directive "impractical" and potentially exclusionary.
Addressing the media after the meeting, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said, "The EC claims the motive is to ensure no voter is left behind, but the circulars imply the opposite — eligibility is being prioritised over inclusion.
We made it clear that those who were voters in 2024 should continue to remain on the rolls. The EC assured us that voters already enrolled will not be removed arbitrarily."

On the requirement of birth certificates for those born between 1987 and 2003, Banerjee said EC clarified that such documents would not be mandatory for already-enrolled voters. He added that any new additions would be subject to verification but not on the basis of one document alone.

TMC also raised concerns about voters being added in bulk suddenly just before the elections, especially individuals aged between 50 and 60 years. The party alleged that this had occurred in Delhi, Maharashtra and Haryana.
Banerjee said the party had asked EC for a cut-off for inclusion of such voters and sought a mechanism by which political parties are allowed to verify voters being added. "We are not against new voters but they should be legitimate and within the 18-21 age-group.
The inclusion of thousands of older voters compromises the process," he added.
On Aadhaar linking and submission of photos at the booth level, TMC said it objected to what it described as a breach of privacy. According to the delegation, EC officials said Aadhaar linking was voluntary and that it would review the process to safeguard identity data.
Bengal minister and Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim alleged that central forces often enter polling booths and influence voters.
"We have asked that if central forces are deployed, state police are also present for balance. No force should enter the actual voting area unless there's unrest," he said.
The TMC delegation also flagged delays in publication of voter turnout data and raised concerns about institutional neutrality, citing the Bengal governor's visits to politically-sensitive areas during elections. It also demanded action against Union home minister Amit Shah for making a political speech during an official programme ahead of a bypoll. "EC said they would examine the issue," said Hakim.

Cheema defends Punjab's Rs 8,500cr loan plan, cites legacy debt & RBI limits

1 2 Chandigarh: Reacting to criticism of the AAP govt by the opposition for its plans to raise a loan of Rs 8,500 crore in the second quarter from July to September, finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Tuesday said that the state govt planned to borrow funds to meet the redemption obligations of over Rs 3,500 crore for legacy debt. He added that the loan was within the borrowing limits sanctioned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the projections made in the state budget 2025-26. "The opposition party leaders don't understand economics. Even their household budgets are made by their wives. From the US to our neighbouring Haryana, state economies borrow funds. However, it is being done within the prescribed limits and continuous attempts are being made to bring down the outstanding debt. The RBI has now allowed us to raise loans over the next three months," said Cheema, on the sidelines of a press conference on growth in goods and sales tax (GST) collections. "I had given the quarterly projections of the state's borrowings in the budget presented in March. The entire details were shared in the vidhan sabha. The AAP govt has improved its financial health and that is why the RBI has been approving the borrowing limits well in advance," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's The Average Price of a 6-Hour Gutter Guards Upgrade Read More Undo The market borrowings to be undertaken by the state govt have been approved by the RBI. The cash-strapped govt would raise a loan of Rs 2,000 crore in July, Rs 3,000 crore in Aug, and Rs 3,500 crore in Sept. Replying to a media query, Cheema said that the state has to make interest payments of Rs 25,000 crore and principal payments of Rs 18,200 crore on legacy debt availed by the previous SAD-BJP and Congress regimes in FY 2025-26, while planning to borrow Rs 49,900 crore, despite Rs 13,000 crore in deductions by the Centre. He added that the state govt planned to borrow Rs 8,500 crore to meet the redemption obligations of over Rs 3,500 crore for legacy debt in the second quarter of the current financial year alone. "Punjab's fiscal management is on a strong footing, with the state govt taking proactive steps to manage its debt obligations. He highlighted that the Punjab govt recently invested Rs 1,000 crore each in the guarantee redemption fund (GRF) and consolidated sinking fund (CSF), with the latter now exceeding Rs 10,000 crore, a significant increase from Rs 3,000 crore when the current government took office," he added. Majithia moves HC against ‘illegal arrest'

1 2 3 Chandigarh: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia has approached the Punjab and Haryana high court against his "illegal" arrest by the Punjab Police in a corruption case. According to Majithia, the FIR dated June 25 registered against him by the vigilance bureau in Mohali is a result of political witch-hunting and vendetta, initiated by the present political dispensation. It has also been stated that the sole object of the FIR is to malign and harass him for being a vocal critic and political opponent. As per the petition, he was kept in illegal custody on June 25 for few hours before his formal arrest was made. "The remand application filed by the investigating agency lacked any concrete or urgent investigative ground and merely relied on broad, speculative allegations such as his alleged influence, foreign connections, and general statements about the need to confront him with documents or digital devices. These assertions clearly reflect a motive to extract a confession or admission from the petitioner in violation of the constitutional provisions," Majithia claimed in his plea. The petition filed by the senior leader also alleged that the magistrate, while granting remand, failed to record mandatory satisfaction as required under rules, including examining case diaries, recording reasons for police custody, and ascertaining the existence of a specific investigative need. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Neuropatia atacando durante o dia? According to the plea, the SC in its detailed order dated March 4 refused his custodial interrogation despite the same allegations being pressed before it via multiple affidavits filed by the state of Punjab. It has been further claimed that despite his cooperation and findings of the apex court, the state once again resorted to seeking police custody by concealing material facts and misrepresenting urgency before the magistrate. 70% dip in Indians caught trying to enter US illegally in Jan-May 2025

AHMEDABAD: The number of Indians caught crossing illegally into the US in the first five months of 2025 fell a whopping 70% over the same span last year following Donald Trump's return as President and his take-no-prisoners immigration policies. The number fell from 34,535 in Jan-May 2024 - when President Joe Biden was in office - to 10,382 in the same period of 2025. Yet, the fact that 10,382 Indians risked life and limb to sneak in even as the route becomes more perilous indicates the desperation to chase the American dream remains just as fierce. The count included at least 30 unaccompanied minors, many from Gujarat. The numbers have been released by US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP). The sharp drop coincides with the Trump administration's renewed crackdown on illegal immigration, which allegedly disrupted long-standing smuggling networks that cater to hopeful migrants from Gujarat. Anticipating Trump's return, many syndicates paused ops from late 2024 US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) data shows a dramatic reversal in border encounters, with daily arrests of Indians dropping to around 69 from 230. Many of these syndicates paused their operations from late 2024, anticipating Trump's return. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She is just 10 years old! "People still want to go, but smugglers have either scaled back or raised costs, and the fear of stricter deportation is real. " The broader impact is also visible in USCBP's overall data, which show the number of illegal immigrants (across all nationalities) apprehended dropped sharply over the same five-month period of 2025. Such arrests fell from 81,492 in Jan to 28,617 in Feb, 29,021 in March, 29,218 in April, and 29,502 in May. Yet for many Indians, especially from Gujarat, the dream of a better life across the border remains irresistible, and often fatal. On May 9, a boat carrying illegal migrants capsized near Del Mar, California, killing 14-year-old Prince and 10-year-old Mahi. Their parents, Brijesh and Sangita Patel, survived the wreck with grievous injuries. The deaths are not isolated. At least nine people from Gujarat are confirmed to have died while trying to cross the US border since Jan 2025. Of the at least 30 unaccompanied minors caught this year, agents said some were probably abandoned by adult companions during the perilous journey. In some cases, smugglers encouraged families to separate in hopes that minors would be treated more leniently under US immigration rules. According to officials, Gujarat continues to be one of the main sources of such illegal migration. "Over the past decade, networks of agents have established overland routes through Central America," an official said.
