Kolkata: A Kolkata-based Geography professor, who went to climb Mount Damavand in Iran, got stranded in Tehran a day before his scheduled departure after Israel launched attacks on Iran.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran has meanwhile issued an advisory to Indians stuck in Iran to avoid unnecessary movements and observe safety protocols.
"It (the airstrikes) started a day before my scheduled departure and airspaces were closed," said the professor, Falguni Dey, who teaches at Bagbazar Women's College.
"I had no other way than to stay back at the Hotel Mashhad at Taleqani in Tehran. It is safe here, but I was not prepared for the situation.
Since yesterday (Friday), I have been hearing bomb explosions. Tourists stranded in hotels are trying to peek through the windows each time a bomb explodes. I have never faced such a situation. Officials at the Indian Embassy have asked me to stay calm, but the tension is mounting each hour," Dey said over the phone.
Israel launched Operation Rising Lion on Iran on June 12-13, and the chain of events spiralled into retaliation from Iran.

The strikes and counter-strikes resulted in several Indian nationals getting stranded at a very volatile flashpoint. "My agency for the expedition paid for my stay till Saturday. I can stay at the hotel for two-three more days with whatever I have with me. But it will be a challenge after that as I don't have any friends here. I don't know what is in store for me after that," Dey said.

India Issues Fresh Advisory For Nationals In Israel Amid Iranian Strikes
New Delhi: India on Sunday issued a fresh advisory for nationals in Israel as tensions in the Middle East continued to rise. The Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv asked all Indians to stay vigilant and avoid any unnecessary movement while adhering to the safety protocols issued by the Israeli authorities. "The Embassy of India in Tel Aviv is in touch with members of the Indian community in Israel, including caregivers, workers, students, businessmen and tourist groups. All necessary measures are being taken to ensure their safety and well-being," said the Embassy's statement. It added that India is monitoring the situation closely and is in regular touch with the Israeli authorities. "All Indian nationals are once again advised to stay vigilant, strictly avoid any unnecessary movement and adhere to the safety protocols as advised by the Israeli authorities and home front command ( Safety and security of Indian nationals is most paramount for us," the advisory said. The embassy also issued telephonic (+972 54-7520711 or +972 54-3278392) and email Helplines for any Indians who are in distress in Israel. The advisory came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the evolving situation over Tel Aviv's operation 'Rision Lion'. In an earlier advisory on Saturday, India has asked its nationals in Israel to remain alert and follow local safety and emergency protocols. Israel and Iran, meanwhile, continued to launch fresh attacks on each other into Sunday, killing scores of people on both sides. Tehran said at least 138 people were killed in Israel's onslaught since Friday, including 60 on Saturday, half of them children, when a missile brought down a 14-storey apartment block in Tehran. Iranian missile fire targeting Israel in response killed at least 10 people overnight, according to Israeli authorities, pushing the number of deaths to 13 since Iran began its retaliatory strikes Friday, with 380 reported injured. With no let-up in sight, US President Donald Trump on Sunday urged Iran and Israel to "make a deal" and bring their deadly exchange of strikes to an end. Haifa Port, 70 per cent owned by Adani Ports, was not damaged during Iran's missile strike on Israel, though parts of a refinery and chemical terminal were hit New Delhi The Haifa Port in Israel, operated by the Adani Group, sustained no damage during Iran's recent missile attack, according to a PTI report. Iran launched ballistic missiles late Saturday targeting Haifa Port and a nearby oil refinery in retaliation for an earlier Israeli airstrike on Iranian military sites. While shrapnel reportedly landed in the chemical terminal and some projectiles struck the refinery, no injuries were reported. The Adani-controlled section of the port remained unaffected. A piece of interceptor shrapnel was also found at Kishan West within Haifa Port, but operations continued normally. 'There's eight ships in the port now, cargo operations are normal,' the report added. Operation Rising Lion On 13 June, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, a pre-emptive strike on Iran targeting its nuclear infrastructure. Explosions were reported in Tehran and other areas.
