KarlTzy accepts 'GOAT' status after steering Team Liquid to MSC glory
With it, the star jungler has finally embraced the GOAT label after years of sidestepping the conversation and letting his play do the talking as he finally captured the MSC title with Team Liquid Philippines.
Team Liquid bucked a Game 1 hiccup en route to a decisive 4-1 victory over defending champion SRG.OG of Malaysia in the grand finals last Saturday.
"Yes. If I have a lot of people backing me up, saying that I'm the GOAT, I'll agree with them right now," KarlTzy said.
"I'm just really happy and really proud of myself that I became the GOAT."
It has been a long journey for KarlTzy.
He made his MPL debut way back in Season 2 in 2019 under the banner of Finesse Solid and was later selected to be part of the Philippines' gold medal team in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang debut in the Southeast Asian Games here in Manila.
He was later acquired by Bren Esports, where he helped the team capture the MPL Philippines Season 6 title—a victory that marked the beginning of his meteoric rise.
KarlTzy played a crucial role in Bren's historic title run in the M2 World Championship in 2021, claiming the MVP honors as the Philippines seized its first world title.
Later that year, KarlTzy found his way to Echo Philippines where he initially teamed up with the likes of powerhouse names Tristan 'Yawi' Cabrera, Frediemar '3MarTzy' Serafico, and Ashley Marco "Killuash" Cruz.
Under Team Liquid (formerly Echo) KarlTzy captured three more MPL titles in Season 11, 13, and 15, all while also winning the M4 World Championship crown in early 2023 after they swept Blacklist International in their all-Filipino finals showdown.
MSC was the one trophy that always got away.
KarlTzy and Echo came close to it in the 2023 edition in Cambodia, but the Philippine bets fell to eventual champion Onic Esports of Indonesia during their semifinals bout. Then again in 2024, Team Liquid fell short anew after absorbing a 1-3 loss to compatriot AP. Bren in the semifinals.
This year, they shattered the curse with a flawless title run, putting an end to the Philippines' two-year MSC dry spell.
"Hindi naging madali 'yung run namin dito sa EWC. Nagumpisa kami sa MPL na kumapa kami sa isa't isa. Sobrang dami rin namin naging ups and downs and mga na-ecnounter na problema," Team Liquid head coach Rodel "Ar Sy" Cruz said.
"Pero mas pinili namin labanan 'yun nang magkakasama kami until makuha namin 'yung MPL and now, MSC. Sa lahat ng nangyari sa amin, masasabi ko lang na sobrang proud ako sa sarili ko at sa mga naging players ko."

Light comes home, joins Aurora Gaming for MPL PH Season 16
Dylan "Light" Catipon is back home and set to join Aurora Gaming in its campaign in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) Philippines Season 16 that kicks off on August 22. The veteran roamer is returning to the Philippines after wrapping up a one-season stint in Indonesia, where he reinforced Bigetron Alpha in MPL Indonesia Season 15. Prior to his move overseas, Light suited up for RSG Philippines and helped the franchise win a pair of titles in MPL Season 9 and the Mid-Season Cup in 2022. He now brings his act to Aurora to fill in the void left by fellow veteran roamer Renejay "Renejay" Barcarse, who has moved to another gaming title Honor of Kings. "'Yung thought process ng pagbalik ko kasi unang-una ayoko na sa Indonesia and inisip ko na if may option sa Philippines, iga-grab ko na. Ang hirap ng pagkain at language barrier [sa Indonesia]," Light told GMA News Online during the league's media day last Friday. "Six months din ako doon, walang uwian." At Aurora, the 22-year-old Light will reunite with his former RSG teammate Jonard "Demonkite" Caranto to complete the core of exp laner Edward "Edward" Dapadap, mid laner Kennet "Yue" Tadeo, and gold laner Jan Dominic "Domeng" Delmundo. Aniel "Master The Basics" Jiandani, who called the shots for Turkey's Aurora Gaming during the MSC 2025, is still at the helm alongside assistant coach Dexter "Dex Star" Alaba. Aurora is seeking redemption in Season 16 following two heartbreaking runs in the past two seasons---a runner-up finish in Season 14 and a lower bracket semifinals exit in Season 15. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Kevin Quiambao the 'highlight' for Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA Asia Cup opener vs Chinese Taipei
Kevin Quiambao's performance did not go unnoticed even if he played in a losing effort. The young Gilas Pilipinas forward injected life into his team's second-half comeback attempt against Chinese Taipei in their 2025 FIBA Asia Cup opener early Wednesday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Though he sat out the entire first half, KQ finished with 17 points in the second half while also grabbing four rebounds and two assists in just 16 minutes of action. The former UAAP MVP also made key plays, igniting a personal 5-0 run early in the fourth quarter and burying a step-back three that brought Gilas back to within six, 80-74, with 4:43 remaining in the game. But his efforts were not enough as the Philippines came up short, 95-87, in their first assignment in this year's Asia Cup. READ MORE | Gilas Pilipinas stumbles vs Chinese Taipei in 2025 FIBA Asia Cup opener Despite the loss, Gilas head coach Tim Cone tipped his hat to Quiambao for providing life when the team needed it most. "Well, he came out and played with a lot of energy, hit some big shots for us but we still came up short," Cone said. Justin Brownlee carried the offense for Gilas in the first half, collecting 16 points over the first two quarters that was highlighted by a buzzer-beater triple from beyond the halfcourt mark that trimmed Gilas' deficit to 11, 27-16, to end the first period. But the naturalized forward was forced into limited minutes in the fourth quarter due to foul trouble, setting the stage for the former De La Salle star's takeover. With Brownlee fouling out of the game at the 4:31 mark, Chinese Taipei's Robert Hinton sank a pair of freebies to bring Chinese Taipei to another double-digit lead, 88-78, before KQ answered with another long bomb and a jumper to cut the gap to seven with 1:01 to go, 90-83. But his and the rest of Gilas' efforts went for naught as Chinese Taipei closed out what had been a dominant game behind veteran sharpshooter Ying-Chun Chen, who fired 34 points on 6-of-8 shooting from downtown. "We were playing from our heels so we were trying to rush back into the game and took a lot of ill-advised shots, made a lot if ill-advised fouls," Cone added. "But in terms of the way Kevin played, Kevin played very very well. He was the highlight of the team." —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Philippine teams Team Liquid and Onic Philippines reaped the rewards of their stellar Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Mid-Season Cup (MSC) 2025 campaigns held last week in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Based on the Esports World Cup website, Team Liquid is bagging US $1 million prize pool after claiming the championship that saw the Cavalry sweep the contest, winning all five games that included a convincing 4-1 victory over defending champion of Malaysia in the grand finals. The milestone cemented Team Liquid's legacy as the first MLBB squad to capture all major titles—MPL, MSC, and the M-Series World Championship — thanks to the quintet of jungler Karl "KarlTzy" Nepomuceno, gold laner Kiel "Oheb" Soriano, roamer Jaypee "Jaypee" Dela Cruz, exp laner Sanford "Sanford" Vinuya, and mid laner Alston "Sanji" Pabico. KarlTzy has also legitimized his status as the MLBB Greatest of All Time (GOAT), having won two world championships, four MPL titles, and now, an MSC crown. He has also won a SEA Games gold medal in 2019. Onic, the reigning world champion, took home US $250,000 after finishing third in the 16-team field. Onic, led by gold laner Duane "Kelra" Pillas and jungler Cyric "K1NGKONG" Perez, fell to in a grueling best-of-five semifinals duel to bow out of contention. They then bounced back, stunning powerhouse Onic Indonesia in the battle for third with a 3-2 triumph. Both teams will take a quick breather before plunging into action in the MPL Season 16 that fires off on August 22. Incidentally, both teams will tangle right away to kick off their campaigns as they lock horns on August 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Green Sun in Makati. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
