IND vs ENG 1st Test, 2025: Tamil Nadu sensation Sai Sudharsan marked his Test debut on Friday during the first match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at Headingley, Leeds.
Sudharsan was seen receiving the Test cap from Cheteshwar Pujara in a team huddle ahead of the toss, set to be headlined by India's new captain Shubman Gill and England skipper Ben Stokes.
FOLLOW: IND vs ENG LIVE SCORE, 1st Test Day 1
Sudharsan is the 317th man to receive the India Test cap and will likely mark his first innings as India's new No. 3 in the line-up. The left-hander's batting technique received several plaudits after a record-breaking IPL 2025 season, where he finished as the highest run-getter with 759 runs.
Sudharsan has previously featured in two County stints with Surrey in 2023 and 2024, averaging 35. In his last outing for the side, Sudharsan cracked his maiden First-Class century in English conditons while batting at No. 6. Overall, the 23-year-old averages 39.93 for 1957 runs in 29 FC outings since his debut in 2022.
The youngster was also part of the India A squad during the tour to Australia last year where he slammed a century in the first unofficial match against Australia A.
Behind his rise to the Indian team is the story of his family's incredible support and sacrifice.
'My mother takes care of my strength and conditioning and my dad (R Bharadwaj, a former national-level athlete) handles my running aspect. And I have my brother (B Sai Ram) who offers all the support. They know me completely. They understand my emotions. Because they are knowledgeable, they can make a difference in my life,' Sai Sudharsan tells The Indian Express.

IND vs ENG 1st Test: Sanjay Manjrekar uses KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal for massive dig at Virat Kohli; ‘a former batter…'

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar minced no words in taking a massive dig at retired Virat Kohli following the Shubman Gill-led side's domination in the first innings of opening day of the first innings against England on Friday in Leeds. Manjrekar's remarks came after Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul took their time in the middle to negate the England pace attack that featured the likes of Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Jos Tongue and Ben Stokes. With the ball doing a bit, both Jaiswal and Rahul whatever offered wide of the off-stump. The duo added 91 runs before Rahul slashed a Carse delivery only to be caught at the first slip by Joe Root just before lunch. The Kohli reference came from India's tour of Australia earlier this year when the former India captain poked deliveries on the fourth and fifth stump lines only to see him get out eight time in nine innings in a similar fashion. Notably, the weakness really troubled Kohli for most part of his Test career. He retired from the longest format last month. On Friday, Rahul and Jaiswal showed no signs of hurry as the duo pounced on the loose deliveries for boundaries. Manjrekar, who is commentating in the series, poked at Kohli. "Deliveries outside the off stump, full, have been left alone. Jaiswal has done that. Anything that has been pitched right up into the stumps, he has driven. Anything that has been wide, he has looked to score on. KL Rahul has not touched one delivery or attempted to play one single delivery that's been full, just outside off. Anything that has been wide, he has gone with a covered drive," said Manjrekar on air. "So a lot of what you're seeing is being created by these two batters, and my hat's off to them. We know of a former batter who would have gone after that delivery and got himself into trouble. But not these two," added the former cricketer. Although Manjrekar didn't mention Kohli's name, it was certain that he pointed out at former India captain. After the Test retirements of Kohli and Rohit Sharma, India handed Sai Sudharsan a debut while also recalling Karun Nair after a huge gap of eight years. While Sudharsan was out for a duck on debut at no.3, new captain Shubman Gill batted at no.4 (Kohli's batting position), followed by vice-captain Rishabh Pant. Nair, all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur follow.

‘You can control game more if you bat first': Alastair Cook unconvinced by Stokes' decision to bowl first in ENG vs IND 1st Test

England skipper Ben Stokes's decision to bowl first after winning the toss in the first Test at Headingley in Leeds on Friday seemed to have gone India's way after openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal put on a 91-run stand for the opening wicket. Although two quick wickets against the run of play just before lunch shifted the momentum back to the home side, former England captain Alastair Cook still seems unconvinced by Stokes's decision to bowl and felt it was a good toss to lose for Shubman Gill-led India. FOLLOW: IND vs ENG LIVE SCORE, 1st Test Day 1 'The fact it's so hot… If you bowl first and don't bowl them out, you're bowling all day. England are guaranteed to bowl all day, and probably a bit tomorrow, looking at the conditions, unless India don't bat as well as they've started. Therefore, you're backing up. Say India bat 120 overs. They only have to bowl for two sessions (on day two). You feel like you can control the game more if you bat first,' said Cook to the BBC's Test Match Special. Jaiswal and Rahul played solid cricket for the first 24 overs, making it the first instance in the last seven Tests at Headingley where a wicket didn't fall in the first 10 overs of the game. It was also the first fifty-plus opening stand in the first innings of a Leeds Test since Graeme Smith & Alviro Petersen's 120-run stand in 2012. After winning the toss, Stokes elected to field first and said, 'We'll bowl. Headingley is a very good cricket wicket. We've had some really good games here. Want to try and use the early conditions. Been a long time coming, bit strange that this is just the second series but we're ready. It's been mixed, some lads have played county cricket, we've had three days of really good cricket. Usual suspects in the top seven, Woakes, Brydon, Bashir, Tongue and myself make up the bowling.' India skipper Gill said, 'We would've bowled first as well, might be a bit tough in the first session but it should be good to bat on later. Sun is out, should be a good batting deck for us. Preparation has been amazing, we played a practice game in Beckenham, lads are feeling great. Sai makes his debut, Karun comes in. Sai will bat at three.' India were 92/2 at Lunch after Rahul fell for 42 and debutant Sai Sudharsan was strangled down leg by Stokes.

Lord of the Pings on social media for sharply dividing selection call, Shardul Thakur, had this to say about playing in England

He's the most holy debated selection on the Indian team, but Shardul Thakur got the nod ahead of Nitish Kumar Reddy for the first Test at Headingley. It might be the runs he scored in the intra-squad matches, or his prior experience in England, but Coach Gautam Gambhir chose the Mumbai seaming all-rounder ahead of a top spinner and a fellow utility batter all rounder in Reddy. For the man himself, playing in England remains special. Speaking to BCCI TV before the Test, Thakur had said that the team was keen to show England that India were there to 'put up a show.' A grand show. 'Now England team is also playing different type of cricket. So we would like to surprise them also and prove we are here to put up a show,' Thakur told the board channel. He labelled playing in England his fondest memory. 'I think 2021 series where we won couple of games (was memorable). The first one also we could have won but unfortunately it rained on last day and we couldn't chase down the total. But then we won at Lord's and at the Oval,' he recalled. 'Then we came back for the fifth Test next year and series was level. But that was one of the fondest memories for me. It's one of the best series I've been part of,' he said. Former bowling coach Bharat Arun had seen merit in picking him before the toss up with Reddy, and mostly based on his bowling. 'I think if I'm not mistaken he's got about two or three fifties on the trot and he came up with very important breakthroughs whenever given the ball. He can move the ball and bowled in early 130s,' Arun told IANS via Sony. He had reckoned the decision would be made based on how they were bowling at that particular moment. While social media considered him washed up after having had his moment in Australia, Arun had told IANS, 'Shardul has done very well for us in England on the last tour. He was very handy with the bat.' Speaking to BCCI TV, he said, 'It's very exciting to play in this part of the world where you face different challenges. First one is of course weather. Sometimes cloudy, sometimes bright sunny. As a player you need to make adjustments to your game, whether batting or bowling.' Speaking on the rest of the team, he had said, 'It's good to have that fresh energy in team. Few youngsters coming up. New talent is always exciting.' For someone who's got results in England and Australia, including that 50 at Oval, Thakur, now 33, brings some experience to a young line-up, though his selection chopped it's fair share of brickbats. 'It's always great to win an away series, away from home. If we can achieve this feat, it would be massive for the entire nation,' he told BCCI TV.
