Girl from Cumbria to represent Britain at 'prestigious' international tournament

Yahoo06-05-2025

A girl from Cumbria is preparing to represent Britain at a 'prestigious' international tournament this weekend.
Gabby Pettigrew, a 12-year-old from Kendal, will be competing at the World Taekwondo Cadet Championships in Sheikh Zayed Sport City in Fujairah of the United Arab Emirates.
The tournament will take place between May 10 and 14 with Gabby representing Core Taekwondo Academy.
Coach and dad Steven Pettigrew said: "It's amazing news and we're so proud of her.
"And we've got to say a big congratulations to all the other cadets who have been selected."

Gabby will be joined by four other young Britons in the tournament - Nyah Cannon from Nottingham, Henry Hunter and Luis Harrison from Quest Taekwondo in Sheffield, and Joshua Sherratt of BTS Maddogs in Stoke-on-Trent.
The upcoming event will provide a platform for the 'stars of the future' to showcase their skills on the biggest stage, with athletes coming from across the world to compete for the coveted prize.
Gabby will be looking to continue her fine from the recent European Club Championships in Estonia, and will be competing in the -29kg weight division.

For Steven and Core Taekwondo, Gabby's success is just the latest positive news, with the academy moving into larger premises at Stramongate to welcome more students than ever before.
"Our old do-jang has served us well and it's sad to see it go as a lot of hard work was put into it," Steven added.
"But we have outgrown it now and needed somewhere bigger to help us move forward with our aim and vision of being able to offer a top quality venue, as well as coaching to enhance our members' training experience.
"We have had a great start to the project, completing our smaller hall all thanks to all our fabulous volunteers, coaches, committee, parents, kids, our sponsors, and also all those who've donated items."

Club World Cup: Jack Grealish left out of Man City squad

MIAMI (AP) — Jack Grealish has been left out of Manchester City's squad for the Club World Cup. City manager Pep Guardiola named a 27-man squad for the tournament, which kicks off in Miami on Saturday, with Grealish a notable omission. Advertisement The England forward was a British record signing when he moved to City from Aston Villa for 100 million pounds ($139 million then) in 2021 and went on to help the club win three Premier League titles, the Champions League and a host of other trophies. But he has become an increasingly peripheral figure and made only seven league starts last season. The 29-year-old Grealish's absence from the Club World Cup will add to the growing expectation that he will leave during the offseason, with Guardiola embarking on a squad rebuild following the team's first trophyless season in eight years. City's squad includes four new players signed in time to take part in the month-long tournament in the United States: Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli. Advertisement In January, City also spent big to sign Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis as Guardiola began his overhaul of a squad that saw its dominance of English soccer broken by Liverpool last season. If Grealish goes, he is likely to be one of a number of players to move on. Kevin De Bruyne is leaving at the end of his contract this month and Kyle Walker is also likely to go after a loan move to AC Milan in January; as expected, neither player was in the squad. City's first match at the 32-team tournament is against Wydad Casablanca next Wednesday in Philadelphia. The other teams in the group are Juventus and Abu Dhabi's Al Ain. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer: James Robson, The Associated Press
