7/11Mumbai train blast: Pune's Suhail Shaikh acquitted by HC: we had lost hope, but he did not, says family
After the HC verdict, Suhail's younger brother Rahil Shaikh, was in tears. 'I cannot tell you how happy we are. We as a family had lost all hope. But Suhail bhai had not lost hope. He used to say he had faith in the judiciary of India. We have finally got justice,' Rahil told The Indian Express.
A metal fabrication worker, Rahil said his brother Suhail has been in Amravati central prison. 'I spoke with him over the phone after the judgement today. He was so happy and emotional at the same time. We are leaving for Amravati tonight. We used to talk to him via video conferencing calls and he was the one who used to tell us to have faith in the system,' he said.
Rahil added he lost his parents after Suhail's arrest. 'They left this world waiting for Suhail to get justice,' he said.
Rahil said Suhail's wife, three children (a daughter and a son, who are now married, as well as the youngest, a boy) are all eagerly waiting for him to return. 'They suffered a lot. The investigators had taken all their documents including the gas card. The family was publicly humiliated. Even our relatives abandoned us. But the truth has prevailed now,' he said.
On the evening of July 11, 2006, seven bombs had exploded in local trains in Mumbai, killing 187 persons and leaving 817 injured. A probe into the terror attacks, termed as the '7/11' Mumbai train blasts, led to the arrest of 13 persons, including Suhail, who was picked up from his Pune residence on July 21. At the time, he worked as a rafoo artisan and tailor to earn a living. He had completed HSC from an English medium school in Pune Camp and also worked as a faith healer, said Rahil.
In September 2015, a special court in Mumbai, convicted 12 accused persons, while one was acquitted. The court awarded the death penalty to five accused, while seven others including Suhail were sentenced to imprisonment for life. The Bombay HC Monday acquitted all the accused in this case.
'I am on my way to meet my father and bring him home after so many years,' said Suhail's son Syed Shaikh, who is employed in repairing and installing air conditioners in Pune.
Investigators had claimed that the 7/11 train blast strike was allegedly masterminded by wanted accused Azam Chima alias Babaji, a Pakistani operative of terror outfit Lashkar e Taiba (LeT), who indoctrinated and trained SIMI operatives from India for the terror strikes.
It was alleged that a wanted SIMI member, Mohammed Faizal Ataur Rehman Shaikh from Pune, had incited Suhail and gave him Rs 1 lakh to go to an LeT training camp. It had been alleged that Suhail was trained in handling arms, ammunition and explosives at an LeT terrorist camp at Muzaffarabad in Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
Investigators had also alleged that Suhail went to Iran by obtaining a Ziyarat Visa and then infiltrated into Pakistan via clandestine methods and contacted LeT commander Chima. It was alleged that after returning from Pakistan, Suhail was asked to look after LeT's work and assignments in Pune.
However, Suhail's family had claimed he went to Iran to set up a dry fruits business. Suhail had refuted the allegations. He had also submitted before the court that his confession statement was the outcome of torture inflicted on him. While acquitting him on Monday, the High Court observed that Suhail's confession statement 'is inadmissible as it appears to have been extorted by torture.'
Three other suspects from Pune — Mohammed Raheel Shaikh of Kubera Garden, Kondhwa, Pune; Rizwan Mohammed Daware, a software professional, who had been resided at Premanand Park in Wanavdi and Sohail Usman Gani Shaikh of Gaffar Baig street in Pune Camp — who were named as wanted accused in the 7/11 Mumbai train blasts case are still on the run. Their names and photographs were also printed on the pocket calendar (for the year 2015) titled 'Wanted', which was prepared by the Pune unit of the state ATS.

Himachal makes dope testing for ‘Chitta' mandatory in police recruitment
Days after Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla expressed concern about the drug menace in the State, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday said his government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards the drug menace, even as it decided to introduce mandatory dope testing for 'Chitta' (heroin) during police recruitment. He made the remark during the Cabinet meeting held under his chairmanship in Shimla. The Departments of Police, Social Justice and Empowerment, and Health elaborated the steps being taken to combat drug abuse in Himachal Pradesh. 'The State government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards the drug menace and is fully committed to protecting the youth from falling victim to drug abuse,' said Mr. Sukhu, adding that there's an urgent need of coordinated actions to dismantle drug networks to protect the youth of the State from addiction. The Cabinet decided to introduce mandatory dope testing for 'Chitta' (heroin) during police recruitment. Besides, all new government employees will be required to submit an undertaking confirming they do not consume 'Chitta', said an official statement, adding that strict action would be taken against any government employees found involved in drug-related activities. 'It was informed during the meeting that the drug abuse situation in Himachal Pradesh remains under control, with Narcotic Drugs And Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 cases accounting for nine percent of total cases, significantly lower than Punjab's 20%. Under the tenure of the present government, 45 cases were registered, and properties worth Rs 42.22 crore belonging to individuals involved in drug-related activities were attached. This marks a more than two-fold increase in the number of cases and a three-fold increase in the value of properties seized as compared to previous periods,' it added. The Chief Minister directed the Health Department to intensify its efforts in capacity building, awareness generation, treatment, counseling, follow-up, and rehabilitation of individuals affected by drug addiction. Besides, he emphasized the need for a coordinated approach, asking all concerned departments to work jointly in waging a comprehensive war against substance abuse. He also stressed the importance of regular interstate border monitoring to prevent drug trafficking.

Student killed; politician's grandson on police radar
Chennai: When a 19-year-old college student, Nithin Sai, was killed after being knocked down by a luxury car near Thirumangalam in Anna Nagar on Monday, police registered a case of road accident death. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It now turns out to be a premeditated murder; the main suspect the grandson of a DMK politician. Rivalry over a romantic relationship is the motive, police said. Though police have gathered details of the car and its occupants with the help of CCTV camera footage and witness accounts, they did not reveal details to the media. They are yet to arrest anyone, though they are treating it as a murder case. Police said Nithin Sai, a third-year English literature student at a private college in Nungambakkam, went to School Road near Thirumangalam police station with his friends Abhishek, 20, Venkatesan, and Mohan to celebrate Mohan's birthday on Monday. The friends dispersed on their bikes after dinner. Abhishek was riding the bike with Nithin Sai on the pillion, when the car hit them from the opposite direction. Venkatesan and Mohan, who were on another bike, initially left the area unaware of the crash but returned moments later to find Abhishek seriously injured and Nithin Sai lying dead on the road. The car had sped away by then. Police transferred Abhishek to a nearby private hospital and took Nithin's body to the Kilpauk Govt Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Nithin's friends told police that the four of them had a rivalry with another student gang and that they suspected that they were deliberately targeted. They also released a video on social media making these allegations. When police reviewed CCTV camera footage from the area, it showed that though bike was well to the left of the road, the car from the opposite direction dashed into it. A senior officer who viewed the footage said, "one occupant of the car can be seen laughing and taunting the victims moments before the collision." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Outraged by the video evidence, the victim's family and friends held a protest at the Thirumangalam police station demanding justice. The case was then moved from the traffic investigation wing to the law and order unit. Nithin Sai relatives said they would not accept the body until the real suspects were arrested. Assistant commissioner Brahmanandam and inspector Deepak Kumar assured the protesters that action would be taken promptly. Police are currently probing the involvement of the politician's grandson in the murder. "We are actively working to identify and apprehend all those involved. The nature of the attack indicates planning and motive, and we are treating this as a murder case."
