Rape case: Kerala HC allows complainant to implead in rapper Vedan's pre-arrest bail plea
Kochi: High court on Monday allowed the de facto complainant, a young doctor, to be impleaded as a respondent in the pre-arrest bail petition of Malayalam rapper and lyricist Hiran Das Murali, popularly known as 'Vedan', in a rape case based on her complaint alleging sexual exploitation under the false promise of marriage. The bench of Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas further adjourned the petition to Tuesday to provide additional time to the complainant for submitting further documents and for obtaining instructions from the state. According to the prosecution, Vedan allegedly sexually exploited the complainant between August 2021 and March 2023 at various locations in Kochi and Kozhikode by making false promises of marriage. From March 2023 onwards, he reportedly began distancing himself from her, which prompted her to file a complaint with the Thrikkakara police. On Monday, the complainant made serious allegations against the petitioner, stating that he is a habitual offender and that two more cases have been registered on the complaints of two women alleging similar offences. At this stage, HC orally observed that each case will have to be considered on its merits.
