Ganesh Chaturthi on August 27, 2025, will close schools in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Telangana, allowing participation in pujas and processions. While Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan, and Janmashtami were observed, Onam coincides with Ganesh Chaturthi in Kerala, causing additional closures. Students should check for announcements regarding schedules and makeup classes.
PTI An artisan gives finishing touches to an idol of Lord Ganesh ahead of 'Ganesh Chaturthi' festival, in Moradabad, UP. Schools in states such as Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Telangana will remain closed on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, in observance of Ganesh Chaturthi, a major festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha. The day is marked by elaborate pujas, processions, and community events, giving students and families a chance to participate fully in the festivities. In other parts of India, Ganesh Chaturthi is not traditionally observed. As such, school closures in these regions depend on state government notifications or individual school board directives, and most institutions are likely to maintain regular academic schedules.
What students should do Students in regions where Ganesh Chaturthi is not a public holiday should check with their schools regarding any special arrangements or early dismissals.Even in states observing the festival, schools may schedule makeup classes or activities, so keeping track of announcements is essential for planning. August has been a packed month for students nationwide, balancing academics with national and regional festivities. Independence Day on August 15 was observed across the country, while Raksha Bandhan (August 9) and Janmashtami (August 16) were celebrated regionally.
In Kerala, Onam festivities from August 26 to 28 coincide with Ganesh Chaturthi, leading to additional school closures. For students and parents, these holidays provide a chance to participate in cultural and religious traditions while taking a breather from academic routines. The decision on whether schools will remain closed on August 27 varies by state and depends on local announcements, making it important for families to stay updated with official notifications.

Over 500 rescued after monorail trains stall mid-air in Mumbai amid torrential rains
More than 500 passengers were rescued on Tuesday evening after two overcrowded Monorail trains stranded between stations on elevated tracks in Mumbai during heavy rainfall, according to a report, citing officials More than 500 passengers were rescued on Tuesday evening after two overcrowded Monorail trains stranded between stations on elevated tracks in Mumbai during heavy rainfall, according to a PTI report, citing officials. The rescue operation was over after almost four hours, they said, adding that overcrowding and power supply failure led to the snags. #WATCH | Maharashtra: All passengers of the Monorail train (RST-4) stalled between Bhakti Park and Chembur, near Mysore Colony station in Mumbai, have been safely rescued: Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) — ANI (@ANI) August 19, 2025 STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD One of the trains came to a halt between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park stations around 6:15 pm, prompting emergency teams to deploy cranes to evacuate over 400 passengers. The second train, carrying more than 100 people, was successfully towed back to Wadala station. Officials noted that both Monorail trains were operating well over their normal passenger capacity due to a suspension of local train services amid torrential rainfall. The disruption added to the chaos in the city's already strained transport network. Panic briefly gripped the stranded train between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park as the power outage disabled both lighting and air conditioning systems. At least 15 passengers complained of suffocation before being rescued, though no serious injuries were reported, added the report. Officials said that 14 of the affected passengers were treated on the spot and later discharged, while one girl was admitted to a hospital. Her condition is reported to be stable. Rescued passengers from the Monorail stranded between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park described scenes of panic inside the stalled train. Fire brigade personnel deployed snorkel cranes to carry out the evacuation. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Nobody should panic as everyone would be evacuated safely,' Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in a post on X, adding that an inquiry will be conducted into the incident. 'Due to some technical reason, a Monorail is stuck between Chembur and Bhakti Park. MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority), the fire brigade, and the municipal corporation, all agencies have reached the spot. The highest priority is being given to the safety of all passengers,' Fadnavis posted on X. The train came to a halt at around 6.15 pm and it was an hour before the rescue operation began, passengers said. It had suffered 'a minor power supply issue', Mumbai Monorail said in an initial press statement. 'People were stranded at various stations due to the rains. More people than the carrying capacity of the Monorail trains boarded,' PTI quoted MMRDA joint commissioner Astik Kumar Pandey as saying. Narendra Kumar Mishra, a rescued passenger, told PTI that Monorail officials should have regulated the number of passengers boarding the train. 'I was stuck in the Monorail for almost one hour and 45 minutes. People were scared as there was no communication from the authorities. Some were struggling to breathe, and tried to break the window. A couple of passengers fainted,' said one passenger after he was rescued. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD A woman passenger said there was no air conditioning and electricity inside. 'As the local services on the harbour line were shut due to the heavy rains, we took Monorail, and went through this ordeal,' said another passenger. Mumbai has been battered by rains for the last two days, throwing normal life in the metropolis out of gear. With inputs from agencies

Delhi University announces schedule for UG upgradation, quota, spot admission rounds
Candidates must accept the allocated seat by 4.59 pm on August 23, while colleges are required to verify and approve applications by 11.59 pm the same day. The deadline for online fee payment is August 24. According to the admission branch, the declaration of upgraded allocations and quota-based seat allotments — including Children/Widows of Armed Forces personnel (CW), Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA), Sports and Ward categories — will take place at 5 pm on August 22. New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) The University of Delhi on Tuesday released the schedule for the next phase of undergraduate admissions under the Common Seat Allocation System (UG) 2025-26, covering the Round-II for upgradation of supernumerary quotas, and the spot admission round. After this, the list of vacant seats will be displayed at 5 pm on August 25. Students not admitted to any college by August 24 can apply for the spot round until August 27. Allocations under the spot round will be declared on August 28, with seat acceptance due by August 29 and the final fee payment by August 30. As per earlier university data, a total of 6,079 seats had been allocated in supernumerary categories — 3,263 under CW, 1,091 under ECA, and 1,725 under sports. These allocations were processed independently of other common seat allocation system rounds and did not impact the status of candidates provisionally allocated or withdrawn earlier. The university has clarified that candidates admitted by August 24 will not be able to withdraw their admissions thereafter, as their dashboards will be frozen. Admissions taken in the spot round will also be final, with no scope for withdrawal or upgradation. PTI MHS MHS OZ OZ This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
