Prime minister urges ministers to prioritise field visits, deliver tangible results, accelerate reforms

Jordan Times21 hours ago
AMMAN — Prime Minister Jafar Hassan on Wednesday stressed that field work and on-the-ground engagement lie at the heart of public service and the key to effective governance, urging ministers to be present in governorates and deliver tangible results
'Fieldwork is a cornerstone of government action. It allows us to assess challenges firsthand and formulate strategies accordingly,' Hassan told ministers during the first Cabinet session following the reshuffle.
Hassan urged ministers, particularly those in service roles, to dedicate time to visiting governorates and remote areas to tackle local challenges, according to a government statement.
The prime minister underlined that public service demands full dedication, stating that the time of government officials "does not belong to them, but is a right of Jordan and the Jordanian people."
'The government's direction is clear, as are the requirements and programs for every sector. We know exactly what we want,' Hassan said, urging ministers to work at full capacity and with seriousness to meet national goals without delay, and achieve tangible results on the ground.
'Delays in implementing programmes and projects can carry a high cost and cause us to miss valuable opportunities.'
Hassan urged ministers to take initiative within their portfolios and not wait for his instructions. 'You must be proactive and visionary. It is your duty to propose new projects and develop your sectors.'
He also emphasised that building institutional capacity is a shared responsibility, not one limited to the minister of public Sector development. 'It is a joint effort, and the government as a whole is responsible for delivering the modernisation Jordan needs.'
Highlighting the importance of collaboration and teamwork, Hassan noted that many ministries have overlapping responsibilities. 'Success depends on our ability to function as a team. Achievements must be collective.'
Addressing new Cabinet members, the prime minister said that the focus is not on changing direction but on accelerating implementation and strengthening cooperation. 'We begin where your colleagues left off.'
Hassan urged ministers to fulfil promises made during field visits to governorates. 'Each of you is accountable for implementing the projects and programmes outlined in the development plans for every governorate.'

Lebanon's Hizbollah rejects cabinet decision to disarm it

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Hizbollah said Wednesday that it would treat a Lebanese government decision to disarm the militant group "as if it did not exist", accusing the cabinet of committing a "grave sin". Amid heavy US pressure and fears Israel could expand its strikes on Lebanon, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said Tuesday that the government had tasked the army with developing a plan to restrict weapons to government forces by year end. The plan is to be presented to the government by the end of August for discussion and approval, and another cabinet meeting is scheduled for Thursday to continue the talks, including on a US-proposed timetable for disarmament. Hizbollah said the government had "committed a grave sin by taking the decision to disarm Lebanon of its weapons to resist the Israeli enemy". The decision is unprecedented since Lebanon's civil war factions gave up their weapons three and a half decades ago. "This decision undermines Lebanon's sovereignty and gives Israel a free hand to tamper with its security, geography, politics and future existence... Therefore, we will treat this decision as if it does not exist," the Iran-backed group said in a statement. 'Serves Israel's interests' The government said its decision came as part of implementing a November ceasefire that sought to end more than a year of hostilities between Israel and Hizbollah, which culminated in two months of full-blown war. Hizbollah said it viewed the government's move as "the result of dictates from US envoy" Tom Barrack. It "fully serves Israel's interests and leaves Lebanon exposed to the Israeli enemy without any deterrence", the group said. Hizbollah was the only faction that kept its weapons after Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war. It emerged weakened politically and militarily from its latest conflict with Israel, its arsenal pummelled and its senior leadership decimated. Israel has kept up its strikes on Hezbollah and other targets despite the November truce, and has threatened to keep doing so until the group has been disarmed. An Israeli strike on the southern town of Tulin on Wednesday killed one person and wounded another, the health ministry said. Israel also launched a series of air strikes on southern Lebanon, wounding at least two people according to the health ministry. The Israeli military said it struck "weapons storage facilities, a missile launcher and Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure which stored engineering tools that allowed for the re-establishment of terrorist infrastructure in the area". Hizbollah said Israel must halt the attacks before any domestic debate about its weapons and a new defence strategy could begin. 'Pivotal moment' "We are open to dialogue, ending the Israeli aggression against Lebanon, liberating its land, releasing prisoners, working to build the state, and rebuilding what was destroyed by the brutal aggression," the group said. Hizbollah is "prepared to discuss a national security strategy", but not under Israeli fire, it added. Two ministers affiliated with Hezbollah and its ally the Amal movement walked out of Tuesday's meeting. Hizbollah described the walkout as "an expression of rejection" of the government's "decision to subject Lebanon to American tutelage and Israeli occupation". The Amal movement, headed by parliament speaker Nabih Berri, accused the government of "rushing to offer more gratuitous concessions" to Israel when it should have sought to end the ongoing attacks. It called Thursday's cabinet meeting "an opportunity for correction". Hizbollah opponent the Lebanese Forces, one of the country's two main Christian parties, said the cabinet's decision to disarm the militant group was "a pivotal moment in Lebanon's modern history -- a long-overdue step toward restoring full state authority and sovereignty". The Free Patriotic Movement, the other major Christian party and a former ally of Hezbollah, said it was in favour of the army receiving the group's weapons "to strengthen Lebanon's defensive power". Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a televised interview that any decision on disarmament "will ultimately rest with Hizbollah itself". "We support it from afar, but we do not intervene in its decisions," he added, noting that the group had "rebuilt itself" following setbacks during its war with Israel.

With Smotrich's Participation: Settlers Storm "Tarsala" Site South of Jenin - Jordan News

On Thursday, Israeli settlers—accompanied by far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich—stormed the 'Tarsala' site near the town of Jaba', south of Jenin. اضافة اعلان According to local sources, five buses carrying settlers, along with a large number of Israeli military vehicles and a bulldozer, entered the site, which lies adjacent to the former settlement of 'Sanur,' evacuated in 2005. The sources noted that, in addition to Smotrich, the head of the Settlements Council in the northern West Bank, Yossi Dagan, also took part in the incursion. Despite previous evacuations, settlers have continued to repeatedly storm the area. It is also worth noting that on May 30, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant also visited the 'Tarsala' site. In May, the Israeli Security Cabinet ("the Cabinet") approved the establishment of 22 new settlements in the West Bank, including the reestablishment of the 'Homesh' and 'Sanur' settlements in the Jenin Governorate. — (WAFA)

JHCO says 26 trucks carrying emergency aid dispatched to Gaza

AMMAN — The Jordanian Hashemite Charity Organisation (JHCO), in direct coordination with the Jordanian Armed Forces -the Arab Army (JAF), said it dispatched 26 trucks carrying food supplies to the Gaza Strip as part of ongoing relief efforts to support the Palestinian people. The organisation said the convoy, which was supposed to be part of a larger flow of aid, faced obstacles on the ground, most notably repeated attacks by Israeli settlers while crossing the West Bank. Some trucks were delayed for hours, it said, adding that, despite sustained efforts, the number of aid trucks reaching the Gaza Strip has declined to fewer than 30 per day, compared to a previous average of 100 to 150. 'This further aggravates the humanitarian and health crisis facing civilians in the enclave,' JHCO said. Secretary-General of the JHCO Hussein Shibli condemned the ongoing 'systematic attacks' on humanitarian aid convoys, affirming that such actions will not deter the organisation from fulfilling its humanitarian duty toward the people of Gaza. He expressed concern over the significant decrease in the number of trucks reaching Gaza, attributing it to the obstacles imposed on the ground. He held the other side [Israel] 'fully responsible', noting that it continues to enforce a policy of siege and restrictions in clear violation of international and humanitarian law. Shibli stressed that Jordan under the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah, will continue to dispatch relief convoys despite all challenges, in full coordination with the JAF and partner organisations.
