AI-driven road safety project all set to roll out in UP after Centre's clearance

India's first AI-powered road safety initiative is set to be rolled out in Uttar Pradesh after the Centre gave its No Objection Certificate (NOC), officials in the UP government said on Tuesday. 'The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) granted NOC for Uttar Pradesh government's Road Safety pilot project, powered by AI and big data analytics. The ministry confirmed the initiative complies with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, and involves no financial liability for the Central government,' an official of the UP government said. For the project, which is to be executed at zero cost by public sector enterprise ITI Limited in collaboration with tech firm mLogica, the state government has allocated Rs 10 crore in this year's annual budget. Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narayan Singh said that implementation of the project has already started with the ITI-mLogica team collaborating with the department's IT, enforcement, and road safety divisions. The initial proof-of-concept phase for the project will run for six weeks, during which AI models will be developed by integrating data related to accident reports, weather patterns, vehicle telematics, driver profiles, and road infrastructure, the official said. 'The objective is to identify the root causes of road accidents, predict accident-prone zones (black spots), and develop real-time policy dashboards,' the official added. 'A detailed report will be submitted to MoRTH upon project completion. The initiative will maintain continuous audits on data privacy, legal compliance, and cybersecurity standards. The project is expected to significantly reduce road accidents, strengthen scientific enforcement, and improve service transparency,' Singh said. Upon successful testing, the AI engine will be scaled up across key transport services—such as the faceless licence and permit system, enforcement modernization, revenue collection, e-challan system, and the Vahan-Sarathi platform. 'This will enable transparent, swift, and scientific transport services for citizens,' the official added. According to the government, insights from the pilot phase will be used to integrate the AI analytical core with other digital services of the department. 'The faceless driving licence and permit system will be powered by automated, AI-based decision-making. Future modules will include real-time fraud detection, vehicle status mapping, and predictive violation monitoring, enhancing the precision of enforcement and on-spot actions,' the official said. 'By extending this AI model beyond road safety to core departmental functions, Uttar Pradesh aims to become a national pioneer in data-driven governance,' Singh added.

TCS Market Valuation Erodes By Rs 28,149 crore Since Layoff Announcement

New Delhi: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has lost Rs 28,148.72 crore from its market valuation in two days after the company announced that it will lay off about 12,000 employees of its global workforce this year. On Tuesday, the bellwether stock declined 0.73 per cent to settle at Rs 3,056.55 apiece at the BSE. During the day, it dropped 1.23 per cent to Rs 3,041. On the NSE, it dipped 0.72 per cent to Rs 3,057. Shares of TCS had declined nearly 2 per cent on Monday. The stock has lost 2.48 per cent in two trading days. The market capitalisation (mcap) of TCS eroded by Rs 28,148.72 crore to Rs 11,05,886.54 crore in two days. India's largest IT services firm TCS is set to lay off about 2 per cent, or 12,261 employees, of its global workforce this year, with the majority of those impacted belonging to middle and senior grades. As of June 30, 2025, the TCS workforce stood at 6,13,069. It increased its workforce by 5,000 in the recently concluded June quarter. The move is part of the company's broader strategy to become a "future-ready organisation", focusing on investments in technology, AI deployment, market expansion, and workforce realignment, TCS said in a statement. "Towards this, a number of reskilling and redeployment initiatives have been underway. As part of this journey, we will also be releasing associates from the organisation whose deployment may not be feasible. This will impact about 2 per cent of our global workforce, primarily in the middle and the senior grades, over the course of the year," it said. TCS will provide appropriate benefits, outplacement, counselling, and support to the impacted employees, it added The move comes at a time when India's top IT services companies have delivered single-digit revenue growth in Q1FY26, capping off a somewhat sobering June quarter as macroeconomic instability and geopolitical tensions weighed on global tech demand and delayed client decision-making.

IT mantri announces ‘Har Ghar Fibre' by 2027

Porvorim: Stating that Goa will have 'Har Ghar Fibre' by 2027, IT minister Rohan Khaunte on Tuesday said that the rollout will begin in Sanquelim, Porvorim and Bicholim. He informed the assembly that the department has received Rs 50 crore as capital assistance for the pilot project in the three constituencies. 'The remaining rural connectivity will be taken up in the second part of the tender, which will come in very soon,' said Khaunte. He admitted that telecom connectivity in rural parts of Goa is poor because of which citizens struggle. He said that under Centre's BharatNet programme, work to create a new fibre network across the state has been tendered and the contractor has been selected. Khaunte said the contractor is expected to give Goan officials a presentation on implementation. Meanwhile, the department has facilitated the installation of 4G towers at 24 locations including in Bicholim, Sattari and Sanguem. Khaunte said a skill development centre will be started at the Tuem ESDM park to upskill youth from Pernem and nearby talukas for jobs there. He also spoke about plans to establish a Global Capability Center park in Goa, to attract multinational companies, but provided no details. Speaking earlier, opposition leader Yuri Alemao said Goa needs an IT advisory council comprising industry experts who can provide policy suggestions and a roadmap for the sector. ____________________________ CAG officers on witch hunt: Minister Porvorim: On the back foot after a series of adverse observations by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), IT minister Rohan Khaunte accused CAG officers of going on a witch hunt. Khaunte said correspondence between the CAG and the IT department was being leaked to the opposition in order to malign the department. ' The office of the CAG is being misused. I have spoken to the chief minister about this and in a few days, things will become clearer. My charge is on certain officers of the CAG,' said Khaunte. GFP MLA Vijai Sardesai, however, reminded Khaunte that the NDA had won the 2014 elections largely because of the CAG's scathing observations about the then Congress-led UPA govt in Delhi. TNN
