BOPARC initiates $620,000 playground project in upper Marilla Park

Yahoo15-03-2025

Mar. 14—MORGANTOWN — For kids in Morgantown, upper Marilla Park is about to become the center of the universe.
Come Memorial Day weekend, when BOPARC's $14 million pool and aquatic complex opens in the park's upper portion, it'll be flanked by another brand new attraction.
Earlier this week, the Board of Park and Recreation Commissioners approved a $378, 206 contract with Fairmont's Veritas Contracting to install $245, 000 worth of playground equipment a stone's throw from the new pool — very near the location of the old playground area.
"This includes putting the playground equipment together, getting it up, doing the pour-in-place surface, revegetation and all that stuff — basically turning that space into the playground, " BOPARC Executive Director Melissa Wiles said, explaining the play area will cover more than 7, 400 square feet.
"It's a big playground with a lot of equipment, " she said.
The playground will consist of 28 play components broken into two main sections — one appropriate for kids between two and five years old, and another for kids between five and 12.
This is actually the second time BOPARC has bid this project.
When it went out the first time, last October, the anticipated budget topped out at $300, 000. The average bid came in around $380, 000.
The decision was made to try again this spring in the hope costs may come down.
They haven't.
"This is not pre-COVID, and this is a huge playground, " Wiles told members of the board.
"Reality is real and the cost of materials and supplies, especially safety surfacing, is substantial, " she later told The Dominion Post. "That said, we are committed to the provision of modern, accessible play spaces, and having bid this twice now, we are confident we'll have one."
While the pool and playground will begin a new chapter for the old park when they open this summer, the story is just getting started.
Wiles said BOPARC is hopeful a complete overhaul of the park's lower section can go out to bid in late March or early April.
That work has been estimated in the $9 million range and will include a new action sports /skate park in the former pool location.
New tennis courts will move to the end of the property to fill space currently occupied by the skate park and the old shirt factory building.
Improvements will also include pickleball courts, covered and open court bleachers, a new basketball court, a recreational field, a trail head for the Marilla Connector Trail, revamped parking areas aligned with each zone and renovations to the Marilla Center.
"We're moving along. If you're looking at a six-week bid process, you're looking at you guys approving the project in, hopefully, your May meeting, " Wiles told the board. "Then we're hoping to get started in late May, early June or so.

Regional airline closes up shop and plans ‘to sell everything' as flyers are left grounded

Silver Airways, an airline operating out of Florida, is selling all of its assets to an investment firm and shutting down its operation. The airline filed for bankruptcy in late 2024 due to its growing debts. Local broadcaster WLRN reports that Wexford Capital — the only party interested in buying the airline at a recent auction — will take control of the company. "In an attempt to restructure in bankruptcy, Silver entered into a transaction to sell its assets to another airline holding company, who unfortunately has determined to not continue Silver's flight operations in Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean," the airline wrote on Tuesday night. The company requested that customers looking for ticket refunds do so through the website and not at the airport. "All credit card purchases should be refunded through your credit card company or your travel agency," the company said. Silver was already dealing with hundreds of millions of dollars of debt when the company lost another $1 million around Memorial Day due to flight cancellations related to mechanical issues, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The airline maintained its headquarters in Fort Lauderdale and operated a second hub in Tampa, though by the end of its run the company only was flying eight turboprop planes. A few months earlier, it had double the number of planes, but in early March some of its fleet was repossessed. That too caused flight cancellations. The company almost lost its headquarters in April 2023 when the Broward County Commission considered terminating their lease at the airport over unpaid bills, according to One Mile At a Time. Silver primarily served Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. Its locations included Tampa, Key West, Tallahassee, Pensacola and Fort Lauderdale in Florida, Georgetown, North Eluthera, Governor's Harbour, Bimini, Marsh Harbour, Nassau, and Freeport in the Bahamas, and St. Kitts, Tortola, Dominica, St. Maarten, St. Croix, San Juan and St. Thomas in the Caribbean.

'We all deserve some money back': Liberty Utilities hears from upset customers at Town Hall meeting

AURORA, Mo. – On June 5, starting at 6 p.m., the Missouri Public Service Commission held a town hall to investigate the customer service and billing practices of Liberty Utilities. According to Forrest Gosset, Communications Director at Missouri PSC, the investigation was launched due to a significant number of Liberty customers expressing frustration over increased billing prices and a lack of communication from them. 'What the commission told our staff to do is go out, invest and report back to us what's going on, what you find. So, there's no preconceived notions about what we're going to find,' says Gosset, 'We just want to hear people talking tonight. It's really about the consumers being able to ask questions. The (Liberty) Utilities are going to be at the table.' Customers were able to stand at the podium for 2 minutes each, asking questions and speaking directly to Liberty representatives. 'We all deserve some money back, a lot of money!' one woman stated before leaving the podium, which was met with applause from other customers. City council approves funding for rental inspection pilot program 'I'm going to be honest here; you're billing process sucks,' said another man, which caused the room to erupt in laughter. Heather Nickum said she and her family's bills had inaccurate amounts due to their billing, which has made them skyrocket in cost. 'There's been bills that have been tripled, quadrupled, and I call them to get help on that,' said Nickum. 'I get passed along. I get told, 'Oh, check your appliances, check this, check that.' No, it's not from our appliances.' Charity Tweed is the City Manager for the City of Miller, who states that she and others are being taxed, even though the city is tax-exempt. When she tried to get answers about it, she claims there was little to no communication from Liberty. 'The problem was all the customer service representatives I talked to, including management, said they had no direct line to billing, no emails, no phone numbers,' said Tweed, 'They didn't even know who worked in those departments. Every single one of them I talked to.' FEMA teams in the Ozarks survey Memorial Day storm damage Kelli Price, the Communications Director for Liberty Utilities, says that they have been listening to their customers' concerns. 'We did implement some new systems and that did include a new billing system. And for some of our customers, it has been less than an ideal billing experience for that,' says Kelli, 'We do want to start first by just apologizing. Our customers do expect and quite frankly, deserve to have timely and accurate billing.' Kelli states that 'all customers deserve a good billing experience,' and they are currently addressing the problems and are working to fix them for most people. 'We have been making steady progress. About 99% of our customers are being billed as they should, but we still do have some areas where we are still continuing to work, particularly for our customers who maybe have more complex billing,' Kelli says. 'But we are seeing improvements. So fewer calls to our call center, for example.' According to Gosset, there are more town halls scheduled in the next few days, with one happening at Branson City Hall on June 11 starting at 12 p.m., as well as one in Ozark that same day and then in Joplin on June 12. Missouri PSC also is holding Liberty's currently pending electric rate case during the week of July 21-25. Dave & Buster's Stock Soars as Solid Outlook Offsets Weak Results

Positive comments about the business helped send Dave & Buster's shares 17% higher Wednesday even though the game-themed restaurant chain missed quarterly profit and sales estimates. Interim CEO Kevin Sheehan explained that operating results significantly improved throughout the quarter. Dave & Buster's believes it will produce strong revenue, adjusted EBITDA, and free cash flow of Dave & Buster's Entertainment (PLAY) soared 17% Wednesday, a day after the game-themed restaurant gave a positive outlook despite weaker-than-expected first-quarter results. Interim CEO Kevin Sheehan said in the company's earnings release Tuesday that Dave & Buster's was "making good progress and our operating results significantly improved over the course of the first quarter." Sheehan noted in a call with investors that May's performance was "very encouraging with a particularly robust Memorial Day weekend of solidly positive sales to kick off the summer and we expect this momentum to continue," according to an AlphaSense transcript. Sheehan added the company was confident its current actions "will lead to significantly improved revenue, adjusted EBITDA, free cash flow and shareholder value in the months ahead." Sheehan explained that Dave & Buster's "back to basics" strategy was working and driving a "material recovery" in its revenue trajectory. The comments came after the company reported first quarter adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.76, about 25% less than the average estimate of analysts surveyed by Visible Alpha. Revenue fell 3.5% year-over-year to $567.7 million, also missing forecasts. Comparable store sales were down 8.3%. However, Dave & Buster's noted that they improved every month since the beginning of the quarter in February. With today's advance, Dave & Buster's Entertainment shares moved into positive territory for 2025.
