Call for balanced approach to early childhood education

Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), Vice Chancellor Dr Nasir Mahmood, has underscored the importance of a balanced approach to early childhood education, highlighting that learning should not be confined to academic assessments alone. He made these remarks during the closing session of a seminar titled "Foundational Learning Assessment in Pakistan: Challenges and Opportunities" held at AIOU on Thursday. The seminar was jointly organised by Allama Iqbal Open University and the Pakistan Institute of Education. The event aimed to evaluate the current landscape of foundational learning in Pakistan, identify key challenges, and explore avenues for improvement. He stressed that equal attention must be paid to children's social, emotional, and psychological development to build a solid foundation for their future. Dr. Mahmood advocated for the creation of an "enabling environment" in schools, stating that educational reforms must go beyond academics to help nurture well-rounded, responsible citizens. "Today's children are tomorrow's architects," he said, "and their holistic development is essential for a brighter national future." During the opening session, Director General of the Pakistan Institute of Education, Dr Muhammad Shahid Surayya, presented the National Education Assessment Report. He expressed optimism that the introduction of a new assessment policy would significantly enhance the overall quality of education in the country.

Deserving students to get financial aid

ISLAMABAD: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) would provide fee concessions to underprivileged, deserving, and needy children for its Spring 2025 semester admissions in programs ranging from matriculation to PhD, starting from January 1. "Our mission is to educate every Pakistani, not to make money. Our sole purpose is to enlighten every home with the light of education," Vice Chancellor Professor Nasir Mahmood said this while sharing details about fee concessions for underprivileged students. The 'Community Scheme' scholarships and the Matric Free Education Plan for the Spring 2025 admissions would be provided to these children. Prof Mahmood stated that the scholarship for the community scheme provided financial assistance to underprivileged groups in society, including disabled individuals, children of martyrs, prisoners, and the transgender community. "Under this scheme, as per SOPs, students are granted a fee concession ranging from 50% to 100%," he added. Professor Mahmood further elaborated that under the Matric Free Education Plan, the university offered free matriculation education to children from the former FATA, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan regions. It is worth mentioning that students can benefit from these financial assistance schemes by contacting their respective regional offices, obtaining the required forms, and applying for financial aid. The students will not be eligible for fee concessions without submitting the application form.
