THEY have long been associated with gut-busting Americans who think nothing of cramming calorie-packed meals into their supersized stomachs.
But competitive eating contests are now going mainstream in the UK, with enterprising starved restaurants serving them up to attract punters.

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, dozens of outlets are now offering a variety of food challenges, from finishing the biggest steak to gobbling up a mountain of burgers.
The trend, which started with Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest in the States in 1972, is now popular with social media influencers.
But how would the average Brit fare taking on the gargantuan meals?
Four of our brave writers braced their stomachs to find out.
NEWCASTLE
32-inch pizza to be finished in one sitting
(They're open for 13 hours) - Difficulty 4/5
What is it? Massive pizza with 20,000 calories.
Only two people have ever polished off one of these 32in pizzas – Pizzaholic restaurant owner Ilhan Ozcan and competitive eater Kyle Gibson.
5
It's big enough to feed someone for ten days.
Staring at the humongous pizza, which I must eat all in one go, I realise that a single slice is bigger than my head.
I am shocked by the sheer weight of cheese and crust.
After 25 minutes, I have consumed 60 per cent of the pizza, but I am shaking with nausea and I am defeated, which means I have to pay my full bill, £93.99.
Boss Ilhan said: 'It's popular. The rapper 50 Cent was here and we delivered one to Bryan Adams after his show in Newcastle. We used to challenge people to do it in 20 minutes but it was too difficult.'

The Big 60: 60oz steak to be finished in 60mins - Difficulty: 2/5
What is it? 60oz steak equivalent to seven-and-a-half average servings.
Barbican Steakhouse's 5,000-calorie steak is £64.95.
Around 200 people have tried the Big 60 Challenge in the past decade but just a handful polished it off in under 60 minutes.
As the medium rare slab was placed in front of me, I felt confident.
But 45 minutes later, I threw in the towel with eight ounces left.
Co-owner Tahir Bhatti said: 'Our best time was under 20 minutes. He was an average-looking guy, but the mad thing is his wife told us he'd had a bucket of KFC on the way.'

The Paralyser: Monster English breakfast in 12mins - Difficulty: 3/5
What is it? Breakfast including four slices of bacon, four sausages, four hash browns and equivalent of a loaf of bread, plus trimmings.
A 2,000- calorie feast.
5
Competitors have less than 12 minutes to finish the £18 meal and get their money back at the Greasy Pig.
The current best time is 3.27 minutes.
I managed four slices of bacon, three hash browns, two half slices of bread, half a sausage, a scoop of beans and a couple of mushrooms.
Boss Mitz Bala said: 'It causes a stir on social media, it attracts influencers with huge followings.'

LONDON
Eating 13 burgers in 10mins - Difficulty: 5/5
What is it? Ten minutes to eat 13 burgers.
I'm a glutton, so was looking forward to taking on Red Dog Saloon's burger-eating challenge.
5
But then I found out I would need to eat 13 6oz whoppers in ten minutes to claim £5,000, and my stomach began to shrivel.
Professional scoffer Leah Shutkever ate 12 and it's her record you have to beat.
My mood darkened as I was served a mountain of meat, cheese, onion and suffocating brioche bun.
Halfway through the fourth, I surrendered. I ate three and a half.
Tourists began to film me on their phones through the window of the Soho branch.

Fearne Cotton, Rob Beckett and David Walliams lead stars arriving at Oasis' Wembley gig as Gallagher brothers' kick off first London show in 16 years

Fearne Cotton looked raring to go as she eagerly arrived at Oasis' first gig at Wembley on Friday. A slew of famous faces descended upon the city to watch Noel and Liam Gallagher make their iconic return to London to play their first gig in over 16 years. After a run of homecoming gigs in Manchester's Heaton Park, the rock and roll stars, fronted by the Gallagher brothers, took to the stage at London's Wembley Stadium. Comedian Rob Beckett and David Walliams were among the star-sudded arrivals eagerly waiting to get into the stadium. Rob got in the spirit wearing his Oasis merch, while Goldie and his wife Mika Price wore their casual outfits. Jeremy Kyle and his wife Vicky Burton were also in attendance as they enjoyed a romantic date night at the concert. Comedian Rob Beckett (L) and David Walliams (R) were among the star-sudded arrivals eagerly waiting to get into the stadium Fans pitched up at the venue 12 hours before the start having paid at least £151 per ticket - but some have paid £564 or more for the best seats. The band announced their highly anticipated reunion tour in August last year, after Noel quit in 2009 after a backstage brawl at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris. They returned to perform at Wembley for the first time since July 12, 2009, when they performed during their Dig Out Your Soul tour. With five nights scheduled, the group posted door and stage timings on their Instagram account with an hour-by-hour breakdown of the evening, starting with the gates opening at 5pm. The night kicked off from 6pm with the rock band Cast, followed by singer Richard Ashcroft at 7pm. Oasis then took to the stage for a two-hour set at 8.15pm. The group kicked off their Oasis Live '25 world tour on July 4 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, receiving five star reviews from critics at The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Times. The group has also dominated the UK album charts, with three top five albums, according to the Official Charts Company. The night kicked off from 6pm with the rock band Cast, followed by singer Richard Ashcroft at 7pm While fans were excited at the reunion, some were outraged after some standard tickets in the UK and Ireland jumped from £148 to £355. The controversy prompted the Government and the UK's competition watchdog to pledge to look at the use of dynamic pricing. After their final London gig on August 3, the group will move north to Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium before performing at Dublin's Croke Park. The band will then head to Japan, South Korea, South America, Australia and North America. Formed in Manchester in 1991, the band was led by lead guitarist Noel and lead vocalist Liam during their 18 years together. Oasis signed to independent record label Creation Records in 1993, rising to fame with the release of their debut chart-topping album Definitely Maybe on August 29 1994. They had hits with songs including Don't Look Back In Anger, Champagne Supernova, Wonderwall and Live Forever. Dig Out Your Soul, the band's last studio album, was released in 2008, just months before the Paris row.

Love Island star Dejon comforts Helena and reveals shock over best friend Harry's actions after explosive Grafties

LOVE Islander Dejon comforted Helena after being left shocked by his best mate Harry's antics during the show's explosive Grafties. Dejon and Harry have had a close bond throughout their time in the villa with Harry consistently backing Dejon during his almost-daily arguments with villa partner, Meg. 4 4 However, during the Grafties, Dejon failed to back Harry as his antics regarding his feelings for Shakira, Helena and Emma were finally exposed. During a tense moment, Helena was left emotional as she came to terms with the fact that Harry had not been honest with her regarding his conversations with the other girls. Helena said to her after watching a clip shown: "I didn't expect you to be sat with your ex-girlfriend talking about getting back into bed with her. "You just don't shut things down. You entertain everyone and everything." In a tender moment, Dejon extended his arm to comfort Helena and check that she was okay whilst keeping notably silent on Harry's actions. It led many fans to comment on how Dejon had failed to stick up for Harry despite the 30-year-old having always backed Dejon during his wrongs in the past. One eagle-eyed viewer said: "So Dejon can't back Harry but Harry is always backing Dejon for what he does an doesn't do interesting…" Another added: "D seeing that 50k and now wants nothing to do with Harry yet he was the one egging him on lol." A third picked up on the instance as they surmised: "Dejon pretending to be shocked at Harry's behaviour when he's been complicit in the f***ery." Collapse of fashion label The Vampire's Wife investigated

The fallout from the closure of a cult fashion brand worn by royalty and celebrities remains unresolved as investigations continue into events leading to its collapse. The Vampire's Wife was launched by Susie Bick, the former supermodel and wife of the musician Nick Cave. The brand's Falconetti dress was worn by the Princess of Wales for her official portrait alongside Prince William, completed by Jamie Coreth in 2022. Other customers included the actors Jennifer Aniston and Rachel Weisz, the model Kate Moss, and singers Florence Welch and Kylie Minogue. Harry Styles, the singer, and Brad Pitt, the actor, have the label's custom-made tote bags. The company went into administration in July last year after receiving a tax bill from HM Revenue & Customs, which was owed more than £700,000. The administrator's accounts showed that although the company had £852,000 in a bank account, its total estimated financial deficiency was £1.18 has already settled an outstanding bill from a financing company recorded as being owed £600,000 after it called in his personal guarantee. The winding up of a company normally ends within 12 months, but the administrators have been given more time after saying they are investigating the brand's affairs prior to its collapse. The administrators stated in their most recent report: 'Initial assessment of the company's records suggested that there could be a matter that might lead to recoveries for the insolvent estate and thus further investigations were considered necessary.' Bick, 58, launched the label in 2014 and named it after an unfinished novel written by her Iovine, co-founder of Interscope Records and Beats Electronics, made a significant investment in the company in 2019. Bick's son, Arthur, died aged 15 in a fall from a cliff near Brighton after taking LSD in 2015. Cave's album, Ghosteen, was written in the aftermath. Bick announced the closure of the fashion label in an Instagram post in May last year, writing: 'I wish to thank my extended family at The Vampire's Wife who helped me create such beautiful things.' Cave, 67, later wrote on social media: 'The Vampire's Wife was not just a clothing company, it was a pure and necessary articulation of the grief that Susie felt in the wake of the death of our son, Arthur. 'The Vampire's Wife was Susie's Ghosteen … Susie's dresses were an attempt to give her grief form by throwing fabric over an invisible boy, as an act of love, an act of mercy, and an act of contrition… 'The clothes Susie created were objects of devotion, sacred things that will live on regardless of the brand's fortunes.'
