After a decade, Mahalakshmi fair returns to Gokak with fanfare
In light of the anticipated crowd and potential traffic congestion, deputy commissioner Mohammad Roshan has declared a holiday for all anganwadis, schools, and colleges in Gokak town from June 30 to July 8. These premises will also serve as temporary accommodations for police and personnel from other departments deployed for the fair.
To coordinate various aspects of the fair, the district administration has formed multiple committees tasked with responsibilities ranging from crowd management and transportation to sanitation and event organisation.
Special attention is being given to the chariot festival scheduled on July 2 and 3, which draws the largest gathering. DC Roshan has directed officials to implement crowd control measures to avoid any untoward incidents such as stampedes.
In addition to the chariot procession, other major attractions like the bullock cart race, horse cart race, and cycle race are expected to draw crowds. DC Roshan has emphasised the need for timely dissemination of public information regarding drinking water, mobile toilets, transportation services, and emergency contacts.
Display boards and media broadcasts will be used to keep the public informed.
To manage VIP darshan requests, an officer will be appointed to handle entries strictly as per protocol, with permissions only granted on the recommendation of the temple secretary.
Given the tradition of devotees bathing in the Ghataprabha River during the fair, safety precautions are being intensified. "I instructed the Gokak City Municipal Council commissioner to install safety ropes and barricades along the riverside and to provide sufficient life jackets for emergencies," said DC Roshan. Superintendent of police Bhimashankar Guled confirmed that SDRF and fire department personnel will be deployed near the river for rescue readiness.
Furthermore, the administration has imposed a ban on liquor sales and the use of chemically mixed bhandara (holy turmeric powder) during the fair to maintain sanctity and public order.

Dharali flash floods: 43 missing, 1,308 rescued, says Uttarakhand govt.
Seven days after flash floods hit Dharali village of Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand, the district administration issued a list of 43 persons missing from the spot along with 1,308 people rescued since August 5. Commissioner of the Garhwal region, Vinay Shankar Pandey said that so far, 43 people were reported missing in this disaster. The body of Akash Panwar, a youth from Dharali village, had been recovered. Financial assistance had been provided to the family of the deceased youth, he said. 'Those missing include nine Army personnel, eight locals from Dharali and five from nearby areas, one person from Tehri district, 13 from Bihar and six from Uttar Pradesh,' he added. Also, 29 Nepali labourers were reported missing from Dharali, out of which five persons had been contacted after the mobile network was restored. Details about the remaining 24 labourers had not been received from their contractors, the official said. Citing the example of 2013 Kedarnath disaster, Mr. Pandey said many people who were reported missing at that time later returned to their homes. 'Efforts are also being made to find out the missing people of other States by collecting their home addresses. The final facts about these people are expected to be clear in a day or two,' he said. He said 1,308 people had been rescued from various locations by teams comprising the SDRF, ITBP, Army and police. Those rescued were mostly tourists who were at Uttarkashi to visit Gangotri and Yamunotri temples, as part of ongoing the Char Dham yatra. 'Search for people buried under the debris is the top priority of the government. We have deployed a separate officer along with the NDRF team for this purpose at Dharali. The IG of SDRF is also camping at the spot. A special team of 10 expert geologists has been sent from Dehradun to Dharali to know the cause of the flash floods,' Mr. Pandey added. The Commissioner said distribution of ex gratia of ₹5 lakh had been started to all those affected by the disaster. 'As per the announcement of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, a better package of relief and rehabilitation is being prepared for the affected people. We have set up a high-level committee for the same. The members of the committee will reach Uttarkashi soon to assess the damage caused by the disaster and to talk to the affected people,' he said. Meanwhile, a machine and its driver fell in the swollen river while repairing a road near Dharali on Monday. The whereabouts of the driver could not be found till the time of filing this report. This led to protest by construction workers at the site who were later pacified by the administration. The construction of the Bailey bridge in Limchyagad was completed on July 10. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department predicted heavy rains and thunderstorms in various areas of Uttarakhand from July 10 to 14. Orange and red alerts were issued for Bageshwar, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar districts. Rivers across the State are already flowing near the danger mark.

Advanced equipment, canine unit, and a search for the 60 missing in Uttarkashi
As rescue operations following the flash flood enter the fifth day on Saturday in Uttarakhand's Dharali village, only two bodies have been retrieved so far, with over 60 feared trapped. While four life detectors were deployed to locate living people trapped in debris, rubble and in the collapsed buildings, a victim locator camera, along with an exothermic cutting device, was also deployed. As of 6 pm Friday, 154 people had been evacuated from Harsil to Matli, and 121 people were moved from Harsil to Chinyalisaur, bringing the total number of evacuees to 729. P S Pokhriyal, the chief medical superintendent of the District Hospital in Uttarkashi, where nine people are undergoing treatment, said that seven Army men have been admitted in their institution along with two civilians. 'One of the patients is in the ICU. We have referred a few to AIIMS Rishikesh and hospitals in Dehradun. We have provided first aid treatments and specialised care in ENT, Orthopedic department, anesthesiology, and psychiatry,' he said. An Army man rescued from Harsil, Sonu Singh, said that he had no hope that he would survive as soil, water, and uprooted trees cascaded down the path where he stood. 'Debris was all around me. I was flushed into the river and flowed with it until I clinged on to a tree in my path. Many of my colleagues went down the river,' said Singh, who hails from Uttar Pradesh. Eight of his colleagues remain missing, including a JCO. 'I saw them getting swept away. There were other Agniveers like me, but they are still missing,' Singh said. His colleague, Harshvardhan, another Agniveer, was also pushed into the stream as flood hit the camp. 'We were leaving for the rescue operations at Dharali when the flood hit us. I climbed onto a rock on the bank of the river, and my fellow Army men helped us out of the water,' Harshvardhan, who hails from Sikar, said. Meanwhile, Head and Member Secretary of the NDMA, Rajendra Singh, said that Doppler Radars will soon be installed in Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, and Auli to improve weather forecasting capabilities. He instructed the India Meteorological Department to prioritise Uttarakhand for the installation of these radars. Under Mission Mausam, he also assured that more Doppler Radars would be installed in other important areas of the state. Singh said that essential equipment like dozers, ground-penetrating radars, and others are being made available for relief and rescue operations in Dharali. These will be airlifted using Indian Air Force MI-17 and Chinook helicopters to all required locations. The SDRF dog squad is also engaged in the search for survivors trapped under the rubble. The canines helping in the search were named Hazel, Jansi, Opanna, Sarah, and Rahi. As road connectivity remained cut off, the movement of heavy machinery to move the muck continues to be a challenge. On Friday, the SDRF teams got hold of advanced equipment such as victim locating cameras and thermal imaging cameras to conduct intensive searches inside damaged buildings buried under debris.

Uttarkashi flash floods: 58 including 8 army personnel still missing, says NDRF
UTTARKASHI: Rescue operations continued in the flood-ravaged Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand on Thursday, with over 372 people rescued from the Harsil-Dharali region, officials said. Efforts are underway to assist 140 people stranded in the Gangotri Dham area. Uttarkashi: Rescue operation underway following flash floods triggered by a cloudburst at Dharali region, in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, Thursday (PTI) While rescue teams are conducting search operations to locate 58 people, including eight army personnel, who went missing or were swept away in the August 5 flash floods in the upper reaches of the hill state, two new bodies were recovered on Thursday, officials said. The toll from the disaster remained unclear. 'Four teams of NDRF are at the spot, working actively... Eight army personnel and over 50 locals are still missing after Uttarkashi flash floods,' National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deputy inspector general (DIG) Mohsen Shahidi said, according to news agency PTI. According to the Uttarakhand police, 372 people have been rescued from Dharali-Harsil, including 260 who were evacuated by helicopter to Malti. The others were airlifted to Dehradun on Chinook and MI-17 helicopters operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF). Officials said the helicopters had conducted about 93 sorties through the day. Of the rescued locals, 13 individuals were brought to the Matli area of Uttarkashi. Among them, three critically injured civilians were shifted to AIIMS Rishikesh, two to the Military Hospital in Dehradun, and eight are receiving treatment at the District Hospital in Uttarkashi, the army said in a statement. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) officials said that over 400 people, including nearly 300 pilgrims and 100 local traders, were stranded in the Gangotri Dham area. On Thursday, 260 of them were rescued, officials said. Currently, over 450 personnel from the army, ITBP, NDRF, SDRF, and state police are engaged in rescue and search operations. An additional 814 rescuers are awaiting road clearance to reach the affected areas in Dharali, according to state government officials. NDRF officials also said that cadaver dogs have joined the rescue operations to locate bodies. 'Apart from the cadaver dogs who will help us find the dead, we have four sniffer dogs who can sniff out survivors,' NDRF DIG Gambhir Singh Chauhan was quoted as saying by PTI. Connectivity to Dharali from Uttarkashi, nearly 80 km away, remains severely disrupted at multiple locations, including Batwadi, Linchigad, and Gangnani, among others. Restoration work is being carried out on a war footing, said disaster management secretary Vinod Kumar Suman. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inspected the disaster-affected areas of Pauri Garhwal on Thursday. 'In this difficult hour of disaster, I stand with every affected family as a son and brother. On behalf of the state government, every possible assistance is being ensured for those impacted,' he said in a post on X. Meanwhile, in Haridwar, heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours has caused significant damage to the region's infrastructure. Officials said at least three houses in Ghosipura village of Manglaur block collapsed due to incessant rains. In Khanpur, a portion of the outer wall at the ancient Jata Shankar Mahadev temple collapsed after a heavy downpour. Temple committee members said that around 100 metres of the wall collapsed, but no injuries were reported. At the shrine Mata Sureshwari Devi in the Ranipur area of Haridwar, movement of pilgrims has been prohibited due to the rising water level of the Rau rivulet. The Central Water Commission's hydro observatory reported the Ganga river level at Bhimgoda Barrage at 292.65 metres at 3pm on Wednesday –– just below the warning level of 293 metres. 'Hourly updates on Ganga's water level are being shared with the Uttar Pradesh irrigation department and Haridwar district administration to ensure timely alerts and launch of rescue or relief operations, if needed,' said Harish Kumar, junior engineer with the UP irrigation department. Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Pauri Garhwal district, five labourers from Nepal are missing after they were swept away by a surging stream in Bankura village of Pauri Garhwal district on Wednesday. The labourers were identified as Narendra Khadka (40), Amita Parihar (40), Vimal Vila (21), Sadhya Sadka (35), and Roman Khadka (18). District disaster management officer (DDMO), Pauri Garhwal, Dipesh Chandra Kala said, 'The search for the missing labourers is still underway. But there has been no trace of them so far.'
