PH Embassy in Israel preparing contingency plans amid airstrikes

GMA Networka day ago

The Philippine Embassy in Israel has convened its crisis management team, bringing together key embassy officials and representatives from the Migrant Workers Office of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), to review contingency measures as deadly airstrikes send jitters in the country and across the region.
Ambassador Aileen Mendiola-Rau confirmed that previously identified shelters for Filipinos have been reactivated and essential goods have been pre-positioned across various locations in Israel.
"[We convened] to review the contingency plan. Tapos tignan 'yung current situation kung anong nangyayari. Doon sa meeting namin kahapon, we discussed 'yung purchasing once again ng mga essential goods na puwede i-preposition sa mga iba-ibang locations natin dito sa Israel," Mendiola-Rau said.
(We are reviewing the contingency plan and the current situation. We'll see what will happen. In our meeting yesterday, we discussed again the purchase of essential goods that we can pre-position at different locations here in Israel.)
She added, "Chineck din natin status ng mga shelters, 'yung mga ginamit din natin the last time, no? Nu'ng nandito ka. So, nire-renew natin yung mga usap, 'yung mga arrangements natin doon sa mga shelters na 'yun para 'pag gumrabe pa 'yung sitwasyon, our people have somewhere to go."
(The status of shelters that we used last time was also checked. We renewed talks and arrangements for those shelters so that if the situation worsens, our people have somewhere to go.)
Residents in Israel, including Filipinos, are witnessing relentless airstrikes and rocket alerts, with security apps frequently updating them on the situation.
"Ang nai-encounter natin ngayon since yesterday, barrage of missiles, walang humpay eh, sa iba-ibang parts sa iba-ibang parts ng Israel," Mendiola-Rau stated.

LIST: DMW shares hotlines amid Israel-Iran tensions
More than 50,000 Filipinos either work or reside in Israel, many of whom are accustomed to conflict situations.
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) told reporters at a Saturday press conference in Quezon City that the figure is at 20,000 Filipinos in Israel, 13,000 of whom are documented and 6,000 are undocumented.
DMW offices across the Middle East were placed under heightened alert due to the Israel-Iran conflict.
As of posting time, no Filipino casualties have been reported.
Although a mandatory evacuation order has yet to be issued, nine OFWs have already contacted the embassy, expressing their desire for repatriation according to the Philippine Embassy. However, both Israeli and Jordanian airspace remained closed, halting outbound flights.
The embassy is now exploring alternative evacuation routes.
"We're checking 'yung mga possibilities kung paano ma-repatriate ang mga kababayan natin. Kasi ang airspace ngayon ng Israel at ng Jordan, closed eh. So walang aircrafts na puwede mag-take off... So we're looking at other possibilities in case na lumala pa 'yung sitwasyon. We're doing, we're coming up with plans to bring our people out. Not by air but probably by land towards Jordan or towards Egypt. Tapos siyempre, ico-consider natin din 'yung repatriation by sea," she said.
(We're checking possibilities on how to repatriate our countrymen. The airspace over Israel and Jordan is closed. No aircraft can take off... So, we're looking at other possibilities in case the situation worsens. We're doing, we're coming up with plans to bring our people out. Not by air but probably by land towards Jordan or towards Egypt. Of course, we are considering repatriation by sea.)
The Philippine Embassy has urged Filipinos in Israel to strictly follow government-issued safety protocols, including avoiding outdoor movement, refraining from gatherings like Sunday Mass, and immediately heading to bomb shelters upon receiving alerts or hearing rocket sirens.

Photo from Philippine Mission to the United Nations NEW YORK - Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo reaffirmed the Philippines' commitment to multilateralism and global peace as he laid out the country's priorities in its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027-2028 term. Speaking before more than 300 diplomats and guests during the diplomatic reception commemorating the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence, Manalo emphasized the Philippines' role as Asia's first republic and its longstanding dedication to equality among nations. 'The Philippines will bring to the Security Council 80 years of multilateral experience, a tradition of principled diplomacy, and a readiness to listen, engage, and lead with purpose,' Manalo said in his keynote address at the Philippine Center in New York. 'If elected to the Council, we will uphold the UN Charter with sincerity and resolve,' he pledged. Manalo underscored that the Philippines' candidacy builds upon its solid track record as a reliable partner, pathfinder, and peacemaker within the global community. 'We stand for multilateralism that does not retreat in the face of challenge, crisis, or fragmentation. Amidst turmoil or paralysis, we seek solutions, we seek new milestones, we persevere in reaching common ground,' he declared. For his part, Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the UN, highlighted that the campaign for the Philippines' UNSC seat has been ongoing for years, underscoring the country's commitment to help solve global challenges. 'This is a day of great pride for all Filipinos, wherever we may be. It reminds us to value the freedoms we enjoy today and to celebrate our rich culture and identity,' Lagdameo said. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in a video message played at the reception, emphasized that the Philippines has consistently worked to promote understanding, healing, and rebuilding across the world. 'You can count on the Philippines to be the same tried and tested partner, pathfinder, and peacemaker in the Council,' the President said, urging the international community to support the country's bid in the elections slated for June 2026. The Philippines is aiming to represent the Asia-Pacific Group in the 2026 Security Council elections. The last time the country served on the Council was in 2004-2005. The UN Security Council, composed of 15 members — five permanent and ten elected — holds the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security in accordance with the UN Charter. —KG, GMA Integrated News

Filipinos join 'No Kings' historic nationwide protest in US vs Trump

Members of the Filipino and Filipino-American communities participate in the 'No Kings' protest in New York against US President Donald Trump and his government's immigration crackdown on Saturday, June 14, 2025. 'No Kings' protests were also held in other parts of the US while Trump's military parade marched through Washington, DC. DAVE LLAVANES JR. NEW YORK - While President Donald Trump's military parade marched through Washington, DC, millions of demonstrators across all 50 states in America participated in what organizers called the largest coordinated action against his administration. The protests were called 'No Kings,' led by the 50501 Movement, which stands for 50 States, 50 Protests, One Movement. The goal of the protests was to condemn and highlight what they described as the authoritarian policies of the Trump administration. Protesters gathered in major cities and small towns, strongly emphasizing what they viewed as threats to democracy, excessive executive power, and the ongoing repression of immigrants. In New York City, the New York Police Department (NYPD) estimated about 50,000 participants in marches across different parts of the city. According to the NYPD, the demonstrations were peaceful, with no arrests or disturbances linked to the 'No Kings' protests. Members of the Filipino and Filipino American communities also joined the protest in support of their kababayan who are still being held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities. Some of the Filipinos who joined the protest were relatives and friends of those arrested. In Los Angeles, tensions flared after police fired tear gas to disperse crowds at a downtown rally following reports of protesters throwing rocks, bottles, and fireworks at officers. Meanwhile, organizers described the nationwide 'No Kings' protests across America as peaceful and meaningful. —KG, GMA Integrated News
