Sanskrit, French as optional languages; teaching in Punjabi in early grades: Union ministry lists Punjab's initiatives under NEP
Responding to a question by Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi, Union Minister of State (MoS) in the Ministry of Education Jayant Chaudhary replied that Punjab has taken several initiatives in alignment of NEP.
'As informed by the state of Punjab, following initiatives aligned with the NEP 2020 are being actively implemented, under the umbrella of centrally sponsored schemes of Samagra Shiksha and PM SHRI, with continued financial and technical support from the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, Government of India: 1. Implementation of pre-primary classes in all primary schools of Punjab including rural areas 2. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy: The NIPUN Bharat Mission is being implemented with focus on achieving FLN by grade early childhood education activities are being promoted in all primary schools,' Chaudhary said.
The reply said on multilingualism and mother tongue instruction, Punjab schools are teaching in the mother tongue Punjabi in early grades. 'In context to multilingualism, the state has already taken the following initiatives: Sanskrit, French, German and Urdu languages are also implemented as an optional subject at senior secondary level. Most of the time classroom instructions are given bilingually and students have the option to choose one medium from Punjabi, English and Hindi. Teaching-learning materials and resources have been developed and disseminated in Hindi, Punjabi, and English, catering to regional language needs,' the MoS said.
Chaudhary added that training modules and digital content have also been translated into these languages. He also said in Punjab, Teacher Professional Development is being carried out under the NISHTHA training modules aligned with NEP goals. 'In the category of digital and tech-based education, the state has adopted initiatives like DIKSHA. The state has also approved 5 TV channels under PM e-Vidya. In the assessment reforms, learning outcomes-based assessments are being promoted. Punjab participated in PARAKH-led national assessments like NAS and is incorporating competency-based evaluation in line with NEP directives,' he added.
Furthermore, the PM-SHRI scheme has been implemented in 347 schools of Punjab.

'It wasn't easy to bring the BCCI on board, but extensive dialogue was held between lawmakers and the BCCI top brass to ensure their cooperation," a source involved in the legislative process told CNN-News18. 'The government's intent is clear: to instill accountability and transparency across all sports federations in the country." Once enacted, the bill will mandate all recognised sports bodies to comply with the RTI Act, opening up access to decision-making processes, financial records, and governance structures to the public. The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, aims to overhaul the Indian sports ecosystem through a series of structural reforms, including legal clarity, gender equality, athlete empowerment, and enhanced public oversight. More than just a legal framework, the bill signals the dawn of a new era where athletes are not just competitors but active stakeholders in India's sporting future. India's sports sector has long been plagued by controversies such as mismanagement, opaque elections in sports federations, and poor athlete representation. With over 350 court cases pending across federations, the judiciary has consistently urged the government to legislate a comprehensive governance structure. Efforts to introduce such a bill date back to 2011, but progress was repeatedly blocked by legal challenges, shifting political priorities, and unresolved court interventions. The Delhi High Court's endorsement of the 2011 Sports Code and pending litigations around the 2017 draft further stalled momentum. Officials believe that beyond governance reform, the bill will also contribute to employment generation, better protection for athletes—especially women and minors—and a more ethical, competitive, and globally aligned sporting culture in India. Centre: No Samagra Shiksha funds for TN for FY 2024-25
Chennai: Tamil Nadu did not receive a single rupee from Union govt under Samagra Shiksha for 2024-25, according to information submitted to Parliament by Union ministry of education. Answering a query raised by DMK MP Ganapathy Rajkumar on withholding funds under the scheme for some states, Union minister of state Jayant Chaudhary on Monday said the funds under Samagra Shiksha are released based on fulfilment of guidelines prescribed by Union ministry of finance. Union govt withheld its share of Samagra Shiksha funds to the tune of 2,151crore for 2024-25 for the state, citing its opposition to following the three-language formula in PM SHRI schools. The reply also showed that Kerala and West Bengal also did not receive any funds under the scheme from Union govt for the 2024-25 financial year. Centre owes state 464cr under rural employment scheme
Chennai: Union govt owes TN 464crore in dues under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), Centre told Parliament. This comes as fund allocation and job generation saw a sharp decline over the years. Response to more than seven starred questions from MPs across states, including TN MPs Thamizhachi Thangapandian, TM Selvaganapathi, and Thangathamilselvan, came from ministers in Union rural development ministry. Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said dues comprising wage and material costs were pending due to procedural requirements, fund utilisation pace, and existing liabilities. Centre, having issued new standard operating procedures, is pushing for Aadhaar-linked DBT payments, and is conducting regular reviews to clear backlogs, he added. The statement also revealed that TN's allocation under MGNREGS dropped from 9,743crore in 2022-23 to 7,585crore in 2024-25. The number of person-days generated fell from 3,346 lakh to 3,061 lakh, indicating fewer work opportunities for rural households. Union govt said about 2,884crore of wage dues to TN was released in April this year, and another 50% of material component dues of 858crore in March. Allocations under the Centre's housing scheme will be based on previous usage, pending houses, and current targets. To a query on rural roads, the ministry said 7,375 km of roads were relaid in TN and more have been sanctioned.
