New look Lakers aim to capture 18th championship for LA
Luka Dončić will also be entering his second season in Los Angeles and fans will be expecting more of this team than what they saw transpire this season.
The Lakers have been struggling without a dominant presence in the paint. Their weaknesses at the centre position has seen them fall short of glory ever since their championship win in the Covid-19 bubble season in 2020.
The King, LeBron James, will return for his 23rd season, and one of the best offensive weapons in the NBA, Dončić, should display maturation. The Slovenian sniper has also been increasing his conditioning, which should see him become more of a threat.
The Lakers have added a former number one draft pick in the form of Deandre Ayton. Ayton has been signed to a two-year deal, giving the franchise the edge they have lacked in the interior.
Ayton joins a frontcourt that includes Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Maxi Kleber. Austin Reaves and Bronny James add depth and shooting to the backcourt.
Dalton Knecht who surpassed all expectations last season as a dynamic wing player along with Christian Koloko, a versatile seven-footer, provide the team with more two way weaponry. The Lakers have also ensured to keep a few veterans like Shake Milton, Markieff Morris, and Gabe Vincent as rotation players.
Head coach and former three-point savant for an array of teams, JJ Redick, will look to lead his team through a deep Playoff run as the Lakers have not been able to get by the first round in two years. The Lakers' front office is focused on size, shooting and defensive fortitude. Point Guard: Luka Dončić
Shooting Guard: Austin Reaves
Small Forward: LeBron James
Power Forward: Rui Hachimura
Centre: Deandre Ayton
James is still keeping Father Time at bay as the oldest player in the NBA, and with Dončić pulling the strings offensively and Ayton filling the much-needed centre role, the Lakers could pose a threat in their hopes to secure their 18th championship banner.

Spirited Springbok Women beaten by Canada in Pretoria
Canada confirmed their status as world No. 2 with a commanding 50–20 Test victory over the Springbok Women in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon. The Springbok Women looked competitive in the second half but lacked consistency across the full 80 minutes. Canada punished every South African error, illustrating why they remain one of the world's strongest teams. Canada opened the scoring in the sixth minute through Daleaka Menin, before the Springbok Women responded with a penalty by Jakkie Cilliers. But restart errors and soft defence allowed Canada to surge ahead with three more converted tries – from Fancy Bermudez, Flo Symonds, and Laetitia Royer – for a 26–3 halftime lead. The Springbok Women started the second half strongly, as Cilliers finished a slick break for a converted try. Canada hit back again through Alysha Corrigan, who scored twice within 10 minutes to extend their lead to 38–10. South Africa's backline reshuffle added spark, and Byrhandre Dolf scored after a solid midfield scrum. Sizo Solontsi crossed from a driving maul to narrow the gap to 38–20. But Canada closed out confidently, with Symonds and Caroline Crossley adding two late tries to cap a clinical win. South Africa can draw confidence from their second-half performance and improved structure after personnel changes. However, their first-half indiscipline and error rate proved costly. They must bring full-match discipline if they hope to challenge strong sides at Test level. Canada, on the other hand, showed ruthless efficiency and composure throughout. The Springbok Women now regroup ahead of next Saturday's second Test in Gqeberha. WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT THE SPRINGBOK WOMEN'S TEAM? Kaizer Chiefs news: Transfer frustrations mount, Striker joins squad
Kaizer Chiefs fans are growing increasingly anxious as the transfer window edges closer to closing without a major marquee signing. While local rivals Orlando Pirates have already bolstered their ranks with several top players, Amakhosi's activity has been slower, raising questions about the club's recruitment strategy. Despite these frustrations, Kaizer Chiefs recently confirmed the signing of Flavio Silva, a promising striker who joins the club with hopes of injecting new energy into their attack. Silva's arrival signals that the club is committed to strengthening the forward line, even if bigger names remain elusive. Image: FootballSA/ Facebook In addition to Silva, Kaizer Chiefs are looking to their youth academy to supplement the first team. Naledi Hlongwane, a rising star from the Developmental Division, has been promoted to the senior squad and is expected to be given opportunities in the upcoming season. Sources reveal that the club is still on the lookout for at least one more experienced striker to complement Silva and Hlongwane. However, the price tags on top African forwards like Michael Olunga and Fiston Mayele have made negotiations difficult. Jessica Motaung, the club's director of football, recently addressed these concerns. 'We are working closely with the technical and sporting departments to identify and sign players who fit the team's style and ambitions,' she said. Motaung emphasized the importance of patience, reminding fans that the transfer window remains open and signings can still happen before the new season begins. As the new campaign approaches, Kaizer Chiefs supporters will be watching closely to see if their club can finalize key additions to match their rivals' impressive recruitment.
