
Survivors of past air disasters offer support after Toronto crash

'It's amazing,' said passenger Peter Carlson, who spoke at a conference less than 48 hours after the crash. Though he managed to crack a joke — 'Nothing beats a good road trip besides an airplane crash' — he later admitted struggling to leave his hotel room.

'I was quite emotional about this whole thing and just really want to be home,' said Carlson, the newest member of what retired flight attendant Sandy Purl calls a 'sad sorority and fraternity.'
A history of survival
Monday's crash in Toronto wasn't the first time lives were spared during a major aviation disaster there: In 2005, all 309 people on board Air France Flight 358 survived after it overran the runway and burst into flames.
In 1989, 184 of the 296 people aboard United Airlines Flight 232 survived a crash in Sioux City, Iowa. And in 1977, Purl was one of 22 survivors when Southern Airways Flight 242 lost both engines in a hailstorm and crashed in New Hope, Georgia. Sixty-three people aboard the plane died, along with nine on the ground.
'Immediately you have a euphoria because you survived,' said Purl, now 72. 'But then you go into what's known as psychic numbing, which protects you from everything that's in your brain that you can't bring to the surface for a long time down the road, if ever.'

For more than a year after the crash, Purl's strategy was to flee whenever anyone mentioned the disaster. Eventually she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital where she told the staff, 'I can't stop crying.'
A kindly doctor took her hand and reassured her what she was feeling was real.
'For the first time, a year and a half later, people weren't saying, 'You look so good! Get on with your life, you're so lucky to be alive,'' she said. 'For the first time, someone gave me permission to feel and to cry and to feel safe.'
Survivors stick together
Both Purl and Lockie are members of the National Air Disaster Alliance, which was created in 1995 to support survivors and victims' families and advocate for safety improvements.
In 2009, the group published an open letter to the 155 passengers and crew members of US Airways flight 1549 after Captain Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger famously landed the plane in the Hudson River after a bird strike disabled both engines.
'We are grateful and thankful that all survived, but survivors need time to process and comprehend what it means to be an air crash survivor,' the group wrote, encouraging survivors to rest, retreat, rely on others and reserve their rights to privacy.
Paying it forward, Lockie is offering similar advice to those aboard the Toronto flight. She described being in a fog for about eight weeks after her crash, struggling to keep up with her corporate job as her injuries healed and being beset by nightmares and panic attacks.

'Absolutely number one as far as I'm concerned is taking to somebody who can understand,' she said. 'I think Delta is a fantastic airline and I'm sure their care team is fantastic, but then again, how many people on those care teams have actually been involved in an aviation incident?'
Friends and family might urge survivors to move on with their lives, she said, but 'it just doesn't work that way.'
'You might have fears that come out later on, and you really have to be able to deal with those,' she said. 'So my recommendation is to take all the help you can possibly take.'
It doesn't take much to trigger memories
While Lockie said her experience hasn't deterred her from flying often, it has shaped her behavior in other ways. When she enters a store or restaurant, for example, she always checks for the fastest way out.
'You have to be able to calm yourself if there's something that triggers your emotional aptitude,' she said.
Purl, who returned to work as a flight attendant four years after the crash, said she can be triggered by the smell of gasoline or seeing news footage of other crashes.
'I look at the TV and I see my crash,' she said. 'I smell it. I taste it. I see the black smoke and I can't get through it. I feel the heat of the fire.'
The Toronto survivors may find their experience exacerbates underlying traumas, she said.
'Like the layers of an onion, you pull one back and there's another layer underneath,' she said.
Her advice: Live one day at a time, seek out people who offer unconditional love and talk, talk, talk.
'And then find a way to make a difference as a result,' she said.

West Point Cadets honor Junior ROTC cadet killed in Parkland shooting
Washington — Just before the class of 2025 graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and accepted their commissions as officers in the U.S. Army, a group of cadets this past May decided to honor one of their own — a boy who dreamed of attending West Point but before he could, laid down his life as a hero. Peter Wang, an Army Junior ROTC cadet, was just 15 years old and among the 17 killed during the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. During the shooting, he held a door open to allow students to escape the merciless gunfire on that day. In a follow-up story published seven years after the shooting, CBS News reported in May that Wang was posthumously accepted to the West Point class of 2025. When CBS News reached out to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in the days before graduation this year to ask whether Wang — who was symbolically accepted into the class — would be awarded his diploma posthumously, the inquiry appeared to catch both the academy's media relations staff and leadership off guard. Yet among some class members, Wang's story of sacrifice remained vivid, and their determination to see him honored had not faded. "When we put out a form asking for classmates to nominate honorary members of our class, I was not expecting Peter Wang's name to be on the list of nominees," newly minted Army 2nd Lt. Katherine Metz, the president of the class of 2025 at West Point, told CBS News. "Most cadets nominated former classmates who were separated from West Point for reasons outside of their control — mostly medical — or foreign exchange cadets who made a significant impact on our class or their countries. However, Peter's name appeared countless times within our class's responses." Metz had read the article by CBS News and other news stories from the time of the shooting. She said a number of cadets from the class nominated Wang for the Honorary Graduate Award and would soon be mailing his certificate to his parents. The award is an honor conferred on those who did not physically graduate with the class but who embody West Point's core values of duty, honor and country. When the sounds of gunfire reverberated through the hallways of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Wang was in study hall. As panic spread, he moved toward the exit — not to flee, but to hold the door open, easing the way for his classmates to escape. He was shot 13 times. Wang was found dead in a third-floor hallway, wearing his Army JROTC uniform. The Florida National Guard honored Wang with a military funeral, and hundreds assembled to pay their respects. Metz said one of her classmates wrote about how Wang "valiantly sacrificed himself to hold the door for his fellow classmates to escape," and said it was only fitting "that we recognize him as an honorary graduate, as he would have been with us." Some members of the class of 2025 were already familiar with Wang's story and the tragic path that led to his posthumous admission. But for many, the details emerged only when his name was announced as an honorary member of the graduating class. From that moment, classmates say, his story became part of the class's shared identity — an enduring example of selflessness and sacrifice. "Now, our whole class knows his story and will take his selfless example of sacrifice with us into our service as commissioned officers in the United States Army," said Metz. For his actions in 2018, Wang was posthumously awarded the Medal of Heroism by the U.S. Army, the highest award given to Army JROTC and ROTC cadets whose performance "involved the acceptance of danger and extraordinary responsibilities." Junior ROTC cadets Alaina Petty and Martin Duque, who were also killed during the shooting, also received the medal. "Peter demonstrated the characteristics and attributes we seek out of graduates of the Naval Academy or West Point," retired Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen told CBS News in May. Caslen, who was the superintendent of West Point in 2018, authorized Wang's entry into the class of 2025. He added, "Individuals like Peter are exactly the men and women you want leading America's youth in combat situations, the fact that he demonstrated that at his age says a lot about him which is why we made him an honorary member of the class."

‘Primal Intelligence' Review: Why Brains Are Better
The Army recruit looked out over the obstacle course of logs and ropes. Between him and success was a simple rule: Ring the bell at the end of the course before time expires. If he doesn't, he fails—and he can pack his bags. There was just one problem: He simply wasn't fast enough. He didn't want to quit, and he didn't want to fail; he needed a plan. So when the clock started, the recruit ran around the obstacles, ringing the bell in record time. This isn't the way to make friends in the military—or at least, not usually. 'At any other military school,' writes Angus Fletcher, 'the recruit would have been disciplined for insubordination.' But this was the Army special-operations unit—where Rangers and Green Berets, among others, are trained—and he'd reminded his superiors of something important, even crucial: In the real world, there are many paths to a goal, and those who succeed tap into something beyond black-and-white rule-following. They have creativity and flexibility; they have something that Mr. Fletcher, a professor of English at Ohio State's Project Narrative, calls primal intelligence, a 'natural cleverness that AI can't replicate.' It evolved with us and it's something that artificial intelligence is 'mechanically incapable' of mastering. Curious, intriguing and accessible, Mr. Fletcher's 'Primal Intelligence: You Are Smarter Than You Know' begins with a colonel on a mission. 'He'd parachuted onto a thousand targets, from coconut Pacific reefs to concrete Persian palaces to moonlit bullet alleys,' and in March 2021 he 'dropped into Ohio State.' His objective: investigate a rumored discovery about the 'primordial brainpower that drove intuition.' If true, then the Army wanted it, because each year the new recruits seemed to be getting worse and worse at the kind of thinking that keeps people alive on the battlefield. As Mr. Fletcher describes it, primal intelligence is part of our lost nature and a key to activating intuition, imagination, emotion and common sense. The colonel called it the answer to making soldiers think faster, act wiser and even heal from trauma more quickly. It's hard not to be skeptical of something that makes such enormous promises. Yet in 2023 the Army awarded Mr. Fletcher the Commendation Medal for his research on retraining the human mind.
