Ireland scrap home series against Afghanistan over fund crunch

Reuters12-03-2025

March 12 (Reuters) - Ireland's cricket board said they have cancelled a multi-format series against Afghanistan this year due to financial reasons.
West Indies will play six limited-overs matches in Ireland in May-June before England arrive in September for a three-match Twenty20 series. Ireland were then scheduled to host Afghanistan for one test, three ODIs and three T20s in July.
"One planned series that won't go ahead for financial reasons is against Afghanistan," Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom said after announcing the team's summer schedule on Tuesday.
"This decision is part of our management of short-term budgetary constraints, as well as our requirement to comply with the Board's mandate to deliver balanced investment across the organisation's strategic objectives."
Deutrom also said Cricket Ireland will invest to upgrade infrastructure and facilities across the country.
The Irish government announced last August it would build a stadium at the national sports campus in Blanchardstown near Dublin, which will also stage matches of the T20 World Cup in 2030, which Ireland will co-host with England and Scotland.
"All in all, on and off the pitch, in time this will be recognised as one of the more consequential years in Irish cricket history," Deutrom added.

Cyriel Dessers Rangers transfer exit splits the Jury as Celtic urged caution over Evan Ferguson

Cyriel Dessers has agreed a deal with AEK - but should Ibrox chiefs really consider selling a striker who has fired 50 goals in his two years in Glasgow? ANDREW NEWPORT: If the fee is big enough then of course. Rangers have let far too much money slip through their fingers by failing to sell when the price is right. Dessers scores plenty - but misses more. He's 30 and his value will only decline from here. SCOTT MCDERMOTT: Only if the price is right. I'd keep Dessers to be second choice striker at Ibrox because of his excellent goal return. But he's 30 years old and is a high earner so if Rangers can make a profit on him with a sale of around £4million they have to consider it. MICHAEL GANNON: If Rangers can make a profit then it's worth taking the dosh. Dessers is on top dollar and he has delivered goals. He's still unreliable in big games, on big money and the wrong side of 30. Take the dosh and invest it. Is Ireland ace and rumoured Celtic target Evan Ferguson a better bet than countryman Adam Idah to lead the line for Brendan Rodgers' team? ANDY: He looked a proper prospect when he burst onto the scene with a hat-trick against Newcastle a couple of years back but he's only scored three goals since November 2023. Idah isn't the finish product either but at least he's been a regular contributor for Celtic. SCOTT: With both players playing at their best, I think Ferguson is a better striker. He has more natural ability, as well as being a powerhouse up front. But he's toiled for two years now in the Premier League and Rodgers sees real potential and development in Idah. MICHAEL: The Ferguson of 12 months ago would have been a good option but it's more uncertain now after a poor season. A loan deal late in the window could be an option but Celtic should be looking at cheaper targets before then. Ian Maxwell has shelved contract talks with Steve Clarke while the Scotland boss focuses on turning around his team's worrying form - but should Clarke stay on even if he leads the nation to the World Cup? ANDY: Maxxy is right to put negotiations on hold as breaking our World Cup duck is all that matters. If Clarke can do that job he'll get the keys to Scotland, never mind a new deal. SCOTT: If he gets us to the World Cup, that will solely be Clarke's decision because of course the SFA would want to keep him on after reaching three major tournaments. But with current form, the question is - will he still be in charge by the end of the campaign if it goes pear-shaped in Copenhagen? MICHAEL: Clarke has earned the right to do what he wants. If he leads the nation to the World Cup, he can do what he likes, even if he might be tempted to walk away on a high. Motherwell have gone foreign again after appointing Jens Berthel Askou as Michael Wimmer's replacement - but should they have looked closer to home? ANDY: You might have thought they'd have had second thoughts about going down that route given the way Wimmer left them in the lurch. But the German did a decent job in his short time and Fir Park and Well bosses will hope Askou can pick up where his predecessor left off. If he doesn't, a Robbie Neilson or Tony Docherty should be their next call. SCOTT: We don't know enough about Berthel Askou yet to make a judgement. But for what Motherwell wants to achieve in the Scottish Premiership, it's hard to not to feel that a manager like Robbie Neilson or Tony Docherty couldn't have done an excellent job there.

FIFA Club World Cup prize money and exact amount all 32 clubs will earn

Chelsea, Manchester City and a number of other European big guns are ready for the controversial Club World Cup and despite criticism huge sums of money are on offer Many players are unhappy to be competing, at least one Premier League manager has said he will not be tuning in and tickets are six times cheaper than initially advertised because fans are so unenthused. But one thing that cannot be sniffed at in FIFA's controversial 32-team Club World Cup is the $1bn prize pot with the winners expected to pocket about £100m - roughly the same as the Champions League winners for fewer than half of the games. And without such riches being dangled in front of them it is fair to question whether Europe's big guns would have committed in the first place. 'The distribution model of the FIFA Club World Cup reflects the pinnacle of club football and represents the biggest-ever prize money for a football tournament comprising a seven-match group stage and playoff format with a potential payout of $125m foreseen for the winners,' Gianni Infantino said in typical understated fashion when announcing the distribution model. Here is what each team is set to earn over the coming four weeks, broken into a performance pillar of $475m (£350m) and a participation pillar of $525m (£386m). Performance pillar The format is the same as the real World Cup - well, until that is changed next summer - with an impressive $2m prize in every group stage game with the winner taking it all and a draw split evenly. Reaching the round of 16 will see clubs earn an additional $7.5m, quarter-finalists will get $13.125m, the four semi-finalists pocket another $21m with the beaten finalists getting $30m and the champions earning $40m alongside a trophy with Infantino's name scratched on. Group stage $2m (£1.47m) for a win $1m (£740,000) for draw per club Round of 16 $7.5m (£5.5m) Quarter-final $13.125m (£9.67m) Semi-final $21m (£15.46m) Finalist $30m (£22.1m) Winner $40m (£29.46m) Participation pillar But even if your team has a stinker and bows out after three group stage fixtures, simply turning up will prove worthwhile. All 32 clubs will get a base payment based on their rankings and federation with the UEFA sides on a sliding scale based upon what FIFA called 'sporting and commercial criteria.' Europe $12.81-38.19m (£9.43m-£28.12m) South America $15.21m (£11.2m) North, Central America & Caribbean $9.55m (£7.03m) Asia $9.55m (£7.03m) Africa $9.55m (£7.03m) Oceania $3.58m (£2.64m) Global football FIFA also say that the CWC will see 'an unprecedented solidarity investment programme' with 'a target of an additional $250m being provided to club football across the world ' - though exact details around how that is being distributed are unclear. Infantino said: 'This solidarity will undoubtedly provide a significant boost in our ongoing efforts in making football truly global.'

Martin Zubimendi transfer ditched as Arsenal submit fresh Viktor Gyokeres bid

Arsenal's summer transfer window is gathering pace once again, with Martin Zubimendi closing in on a move to the Gunners and fresh hope a deal can be agreed for Viktor Gyokeres Arsenal's summer transfer window looks to be turning a corner after some early setbacks. The Gunners have already completed a £5million move for Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. They have now set their sights on finally sealing a long-awaited move for Martin Zubimendi. Negotiations between the Gunners and Real Sociedad have been ongoing for some time, but the move was derailed by late interest from Real Madrid. ‌ Madrid's interest took Sociedad by surprise and prompted concern at the Emirates that they would miss out on the midfielder. But Los Blancos now appear to have ditched their attempt to hijack the deal. ‌ That provides a huge boost for Mikel Arteta, who is now also lining up a move for Viktor Gyokeres. Arsenal are preparing a new bid for the Sporting Lisbon striker, who is keen to move on. But in a blow to Arteta's summer plans, one of his targets has revealed he is not looking to make a move in this window. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest Arsenal transfer news. Madrid ditch Zubimendi hijack Real Madrid have decided to move on from Martin Zubimendi, in a major boost to Arsenal's hopes of signing the midfielder. The Gunners have been attempting to complete their move for the Spaniard all summer but it was derailed by late interest from Madrid. But according to AS, Madrid have now decided to ditch their attempts to hijack the deal. Los Blancos believe that Zubimendi is 'escaping their orbit' and have already begun the process of considering alternative options. One of those options is to not make any new midfield signing, depending on Dean Huijsen's performance at the Club World Cup. Arsenal are now putting the final touches on sealing their move for Zubimendi. Hato rejects move ‌ Ajax star Jorrel Hato has insisted he is happy with life in Amsterdam and is not looking to make a move this summer. Hato had emerged as a target for Arsenal, but the defender has made it clear that he sees his future as being at Ajax. "In the Dutch league you have to show how good you are against the big clubs. Ultimately I have to continue to develop the things I am already good at, so that it becomes top", he said. "How do I describe my time at Ajax? Ajax is home for me. I just feel at home here. "I still have plenty of time. I don't think: I absolutely have to win the Champions League in two years," Hato continues his story. What is the youngster's ultimate football dream? "That is winning a World Cup. You want to be there when it happens." ‌ Fresh Gyokeres bid submitted Arsenal are set to submit a fresh bid for Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres. The striker has emerged as the Gunners' top target for the summer window as they look to bring in a new striker. According to Maisfutebol, Sporting turned down Arsenal's opening £55million offer for the Swedish star. The Premier League side are now set to up that offer though, with the club ready to submit a fresh bid that would exceed £59.5m. The deal would comprise an upfront fee of £51m with another £8.5m in add-ons. There is said to be 'growing optimisim' among Gyokeres' representatives that an agreement can be reached.
