Giant Border Protection blimp crashes in Texas after escaping during high winds, traveling 400 miles
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – A Customs and Border Protection (CBP) aircraft used to monitor the border in Texas snapped loose and traveled hundreds of miles north after high winds blasted the area Tuesday.
The federal agency said that a Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS) operated by CBP Air and Marine Operations broke free from its tether in South Padre Island, in an area where wind gusts of nearly 60 mph were reported.
A helium-filled balloon measuring about 200 feet long and more than 60 feet wide, the TARS was located Wednesday on a ranch east of Dallas. This means the blimp was blown about 400 miles away from where it was originally tethered on the southern tip of Texas.
Footage of the crashed aircraft showed a crew tending to it as its white fabric exterior appeared torn and flopped over bare tree branches and power lines.

The weekend is kicking off much like the work week has ended across much of the nation's heartland: with weather maps and radars dotted with clusters of strong thunderstorms and severe weather alerts. Saturday's severe weather threat covers around 65 million people across the southern Plains, Deep South and into the Southeast. Primary dangers include wind gusts of 60+ mph and very large to giant hail, but a few tornadoes are possible. A lightning strike hit a house in Southern California Tuesday, startling a mom and her two children who were standing just feet away. Tiffanie Buckner was recording the lightning as storms were rolling in, as she and her children were about to go inside, she told Storyful. Her 6-year-old daughter, Penelope, was standing in front of the camera the moment a large lightning bolt hit a home in the cul-de-sac behind her. A busy start to the hurricane season in the eastern Pacific Ocean got even busier Saturday morning as the National Hurricane Center has now added a third area to watch for possible tropical development. But in the short term, two clusters of thunderstorms are on the cusp of becoming the basin's next named storms, but which area of disturbed weather will take the name Barbara remains somewhat of an open question. Watch: Drone captures extent of flooding in Lubbock after severe storms
LUBBOCK, Texas – Severe weather swept through the Southwest on Thursday, causing power outages and flooded streets in Texas. The storm traveled more than 80 miles, producing its first tornadoes around Causey, New Mexico, and not giving up before reaching Lubbock, Texas, during the evening hours, where most of the impacts were felt. Drone video from Thursday shows the extent of flooding across parts of the city. In the video, lightning flashes across a darkened sky as a large truck drives through several feet of floodwater toward an on-ramp to a highway. The City of Lubbock said the storm caused damage to buildings, debris in roadways and severely flooded streets. As the video continues through the neighborhood, cars sit parked in the floodwaters. In other parts of the neighborhood, the flooding extends onto sidewalks. For the most part, it appears the homes and buildings in the neighborhood remained safe from the flooding. How To Watch Fox Weather However, some damaged homes and toppled trees were reported on the west side of town as a possible tornado blew through. Emergency managers reported one person was injured. The town of Smyer clocked a wind gust of 109 mph. The city of Lubbock said roughly 1,400 people were without power after the storms on Thursday evening.
