FAA raises alarm over RAT fittings on Boeing 787-9 and 787-10 aircraft: Report
The Times of India reported that following the FAA's concerns, operators of Boeing 787-9 and B787-10 models will have to check their RAT forward fittings to 'address the unsafe condition'. The FAA proposal came following reports indicating the same 'were possibly manufactured with an incorrect titanium alloy material'.
The Tata-owned erstwhile Vistara has seven Boeing 787-9 aircraft in its fleet that are now flying for Air India.
This condition, 'if not addressed, could result in loss of backup hydraulic and/or electrical power as well as the RAT module departing (snapping off) from the airplane," the report quoted the FAA as saying.
A RAT is a small, foldable turbine in aircraft that provides emergency power during system failures. It deploys into the airstream and generates electricity or hydraulic pressure using airflow. RAT ensures essential functions like flight controls and navigation remain operational if main power sources fail.
The RAT was deployed on Air India flight 171, which crashed in Ahmedabad seconds after take-off on June 12.
The pre-merger Air India operates Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner variants (including the one involved in the Ahmedabad crash) and might not be subject to this inspection, the report added.
'We issued guidance to our B787-9 and B787-10 customers in Feb 2025 and fully support the FAA's proposal to make that guidance mandatory. The in-service fleet can continue normal operations,' the newspaper reported, citing a statement from Boeing.
The FAA said, 'The titanium material that was possibly used is a Grade 1 or 2 commercially pure unalloyed titanium, which has significantly reduced strength, fatigue and damage tolerance properties… A RAT forward fitting that was possibly manufactured with the incorrect titanium alloy material could fail when the RAT is deployed.'
'The FAA is issuing this 'notice of proposed rule-making' after determining that the unsafe condition described previously is likely to exist or develop on other products of the same type design,' it added.
According to some reports, the FAA warned that this discrepancy could result in failures during RAT deployment. If this scenario occurs, it could compromise the backup power supply or even lead to the RAT detaching during flight. The ramifications for in-flight safety are significant, even though the number of affected aircraft is currently limited.

Due to the geographical distance, the Philippines has long lacked direct shipping, flights, or connectivity initiatives of the kind India already enjoys with other ASEAN nations. Recent developments suggest a shift. The Philippines' decision to grant visa-free entry to Indian nationals, coupled with Air India's move to start direct flights, is expected to boost tourism and enhance people-to-people contact, an area in which the India-Philippines partnership has historically lagged behind other ASEAN countries. The success of direct connectivity in promoting tourism in countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia reinforces this trend. While trade and investment have traditionally been the cornerstones of India's ties with ASEAN, India-Philippines trade relations have remained modest. The Philippines ranks sixth among the 10 ASEAN member states in trade with India. In 2023–24, bilateral trade was $3.5 billion: Indian exports accounted for approximately $2 billion, while imports from the Philippines reached about $1.5 billion. The Philippines has historically been a hesitant participant in ASEAN-India trade frameworks, often being the last to ratify major agreements. However, progress is underway. Since June 2023, a new agreement on cooperation and mutual assistance in customs matters has been in place. Negotiations on a Preferential Trade Agreement have resumed, and discussions continue around the Terms of Reference (ToR) for a Trade Negotiations Committee. While the Philippines is a part of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity, it has not emerged as a major trade actor in either. Its key trading partners remain China, the US, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, and New Zealand. Despite having a higher GDP per capita than India, the Philippines recognises India's status as an emerging economic powerhouse, growing at nearly 7 per cent annually. This recognition is prompting Manila to engage more actively with New Delhi. Indian investments in the Philippines are valued at around $5 billion, primarily in IT and ITeS, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and biomass energy. Filipino investments in India are limited but could grow, especially with the rise of regional supply chains. Financial technology is a priority area for both governments, and a MoU was signed in 2023 to strengthen cooperation. While the Philippines received 1.4 million tourists in 2023, only around 30,000 were from India. This number is expected to grow rapidly with the newly introduced visa-free travel and direct air connectivity, setting the stage for a deeper and more dynamic India-Philippines relationship. Air India Crash Probe Ongoing, DGCA Conducted 146 Audits Of Major Airlines This Year: Minister
New Delhi: The investigation into the fatal Air India crash on June 12 in Ahmedabad is ongoing, and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will examine all the aspects to determine the probable causes and contributory factors leading to the flight AI 171 accident, the Parliament was informed on Thursday. The AAIB has published a preliminary report based on the available factual information, and it does not contain any conclusions. "The sole objective of the investigation of an accident or incident shall be the prevention of accidents and incidents and not to apportion blame or liability. All investigations under these Rules are conducted in a fair, impartial and judicious manner, adhering to the relevant standards of Annex 13," Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. He further stated that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has conducted 146 maintenance audits on major airlines this year (till July). In the last three years, the aviation regulator conducted 683 audits of scheduled airlines, according to the minister. The DGCA has established comprehensive guidelines to ensure the safe operation and maintenance of aircraft. Operators are required to comply with guidelines issued by manufacturers, such as Service Bulletins, Airworthiness Directives (ADs), and Maintenance Planning Documents (MPDs), said the minister. The DGCA adheres to an audit calendar to ensure continuous oversight of all scheduled and non-scheduled airline/operators. Any deviation or rescheduling is addressed with urgency and reported accordingly, he added. Mohol earlier informed that a total of six aircraft engine shutdown incidents and three Mayday call incidents have been reported this year. IndiGo and SpiceJet each experienced two engine shutdown incidents, while Air India and Alliance Air had one incident each. Three Mayday call incidents occurred, including one involving the Air India aircraft (London Gatwick-bound flight AI 171) that crashed into a building soon after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12. IndiGo and Air India Express each reported one Mayday call incident. A Mayday call is a widely used distress signal, primarily used in aviation and maritime emergencies.
