PIMA for effective implementation of anti-tobacco laws
In a joint statement, PIMA President Prof Atif Hafeez Siddiqui and health experts Prof Sohail Akhtar and Dr Ahmar Hamid highlighted that tobacco use is causing an alarming rise in non-communicable diseases in Pakistan, due to weak enforcement of laws and poor public awareness.
They cited World Health Organization (WHO) data, revealing that tobacco use results in approximately 164,000 deaths annually in Pakistan and an economic loss of over PKR 700 billion.
PIMA noted that global research confirms raising tobacco taxes not only boosts government revenue but also significantly reduces consumption and related health burdens.
In Pakistan, following tax increases in 2023, tobacco use declined by 19.2 percent, while 26.3 percent of smokers reduced their cigarette intake.
Revenue from federal excise duty (FED) on cigarettes rose by 66 percent, from PKR 142 billion in 2022-23 to PKR 237 billion in 2023-24.
Prof Siddiqui and medical experts also called for stricter regulation of emerging nicotine products like e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches, and heated tobacco, which are aggressively marketed and equally harmful.
'Alarmingly, 68 percent of student users are involved in e-cigarettes, highlighting the urgent need for targeted awareness,' they added.
They urged that tobacco tax revenues be utilised for consistent awareness campaigns in all local languages, and called on provincial governments to invest in youth-focused education programmes. Additionally, they demanded the establishment of smoking cessation clinics in all teaching hospitals to support those looking to quit.

CDA chairman for revamping, upgradation of Capital Hospital
ISLAMABAD: Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, has directed a complete revamp and upgradation of Capital Hospital, emphasising 24/7 presence of doctors and biomedical staff, full functionality of all medical equipment including the MRI machine, and urgent improvement in cleanliness and patient care. He made these remarks during a detailed visit to the facility on Tuesday, where he personally inspected departments and engaged with patients about their healthcare experiences. Accompanied by Member Finance, Member Engineering, DG Services, and other senior officials, the chairman visited key areas including the emergency department, OPD, laboratories, dispensary, and patient wards. The executive director of Capital Hospital briefed the delegation on existing medical services and challenges being faced. During the inspection, the chairman directly interacted with patients, inquiring about their health and the quality of treatment provided. Many patients shared concerns regarding service delays and equipment issues, prompting immediate instructions from the chairman. He issued firm directions to hospital administration to ensure: Round-the-clock presence of doctors and biomedical staff; Immediate functional status of all medical equipment, particularly the MRI machine and operation theatres; and improvement in hygiene and cleanliness across all hospital premises. 'The hospital is a critical public service institution. Any negligence in health services will not be tolerated,' Randhawa emphasised. The chairman instructed the Member Finance to release urgent funds for equipment procurement and hospital modernisation. He also asked the IT Wing to expedite digitisation of the hospital's operations to enhance efficiency and staff accountability. Further, the DG Services was directed to oversee urgent repairs and maintenance of air conditioners, elevators, and other essential utilities, ensuring uninterrupted service delivery during monsoon and summer seasons. Taking serious note of parking issues, Randhawa ordered that 1122 Emergency Services be shifted to the Emergency and Disaster Management Premises near DMA, allowing Capital Hospital to reclaim crucial space for patient services. He also directed the Planning Wing to identify a separate parking area for attendants and visitors. Highlighting the importance of emergency care, he said, 'The emergency wing reflects the face of a hospital. It should match the standards of any top-tier facility with availability of specialised doctors, modern equipment, and essential medicines.' He called for the daily visit of CDA members to Capital Hospital to monitor implementation of these directives and ensure sustainable improvements. Seminar on ‘Work Based Harassment' held at LUMHS Jamshoro
HYDERABAD: While addressing the Vice Chancellor LUMHS Prof. Ikram Din Ujjan expressed that the most effective weapon against harassment is prevention. Harassment does not disappear on its own. In fact, it is more likely that when the problem is not addressed, the harassment will worsen and become more difficult to remedy as time goes on. He further added that most successful preventive strategies and plans on harassment require the involvement of all those concerned and a clear statement of intent. The statement of intent should reflect a real commitment from all parties concerned to recognize the importance of the fight against harassment in the workplace. The Vice Chancellor further added that university has been initiating multiple steps to ensure the security for the female doctors so that our female undergraduate and post graduate students can work in a peaceful and stress free atmosphere. He informed that the University has established female hostels within one boundary wall with provision of highest security along with all the facilities including a newly established sports complex and other needful necessities for our female students so that they should not leave the secured premises for their day-to-day requirements, other than attending their duties. To facilitate the postgraduate students, the University is providing transport from Jamshoro to Liaquat University Hospital Hyderabad and back during the night shift. Prof. Ikram Din Ujjan urged the postgraduate students to identify their problems and the same may be communicated to the administration immediately for prompt response. He added that the training of postgraduate students is being monitored vigilantly, so that they can complete their skilful training in a proper way, to clear their exams and obtain the postgraduate degrees to serve the nation. PM unveils charter for JMC
ISLAMABAD: In an effort to enhance the government's healthcare credentials, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday unveiled an ambitious charter for the proposed Jinnah Medical Complex (JMC), directing that the facility be developed in accordance with international standards of infrastructure, service delivery, and governance. While chairing a review meeting on the project's progress – which is set to be built in Islamabad – the prime minister emphasised that international benchmarks should serve as the baseline, not merely an aspiration. He said the complex must emerge as a top-tier institution, offering specialised healthcare services to all provinces, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Jinnah Medical Complex: PM says will personally monitor construction In a symbolic gesture promoting federal inclusivity, the prime minister ordered that various blocks of the facility be named after the provinces – a nod to the national unity. Underscoring transparency and meritocracy, PM Sharif called for rigorous third-party validation of construction quality and recruitment processes. 'There is no room for inefficiency or favouritism,' he declared. Citing the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) as a model, he asserted that the Jinnah Medical Complex would surpass it – not only in scale, but also in standards. 'By the grace of Allah, PKLI has been a beacon of healing. Jinnah Medical Complex will go even further,' he said, adding that all services – from diagnostics to janitorial – would be outsourced strictly on merit. Officials briefed the prime minister on land acquisition, board formation, and the proposal for a commercial centre adjacent to the hospital – indicating plans for a future healthcare hub. Concept designs and land transfers, the meeting was told, are in the final stages, while geotechnical and social impact studies are under way. The prime minister also called for an urgent plan to upgrade Islamabad's primary and secondary healthcare network to relieve pressure on tertiary care facilities.
