Pahang MMEA Detains Fishing Vessel, 21 Foreign Crew Members
KUANTAN, May 24 (Bernama) -- A local fishing vessel, together with 21 foreign crew members, were detained on suspicion of violating the terms of its licence under Op Makmur and Op Tiris about 7.5 nautical miles northwest of Pulau Tioman on Thursday (May 22).
Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) of Pahang director First Admiral (Maritime) Mazlan Mat Rejab said the class C2 vessel and all the foreign crew members, including the tekong, aged between 20 and 57, were detained by a patrol ship at about 9.40 am.
"Upon inspection, the vessel is believed to have violated the terms of its licence by hiring foreign workers with valid work permits, while the crew members were found to possess questionable identification documents,' he said in a statement today.

MMEA Miri zone director Khairol Anuar Saad said the crew of the Vietnamese boat refused to cooperate when they were confronted about 31 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Niah, Miri. 'They carried out dangerous manoeuvres, throwing hard and sharp objects at the MMEA enforcement personnel in rough seas, threatening the safety and lives of the security forces,' he said in a statement today. However, the situation was successfully controlled and the vessel, with three Vietnamese on board, was detained without any injuries to maritime personnel on duty. The MMEA had detained another vessel with five Indonesians on board northwest of Kuala Suai, Miri. Khairol said the two vessels and crew, aged between 25 and 53, were then taken to the Miri maritime zone complex in a journey which took nearly 18 hours due to rough weather over the long distance. The two boats and its fishing and navigation equipment, with a value of about RM3.3 million, were seized.

Klang boat tragedy: Victims may not have been wearing life jackets, say cops
KLANG: All victims involved in the capsized boat incident in the waters off Tanjung Harapan here Friday (June 6) were believed not to be wearing life jackets, says Asst Comm S. Vijaya Rao. The North Klang OCPD said initial investigations also revealed that the boat, which was being test-driven, was operated by its owner at the time. He said the absence of life jackets had made the search and rescue (SAR) operation for the remaining two missing victims among the six people on board more difficult. "Those who engage in activities at sea must wear life jackets, which are very useful during emergencies like this capsized boat incident, in addition to having swimming skills," he said at a press conference at the search site in Tanjung Harapan Saturday (June 7). ACP Vijaya said the location where the boat capsized had been identified, but strong currents may have swept the two missing victims away and caused them to drown. Meanwhile, he said police had recorded statements from three individuals, including one survivor. "The actual cause of the incident has yet to be determined, and the case is being investigated under Section 280 of the Penal Code," he said. In the incident at about 5pm, three individuals including a child died, one survived (Alvin Chang Yan Qin, 17), while a married couple remains missing. The deceased victims were Darren Gan, 3; Cheu Son Hin, 50; and Fong Yong Sen, 29, while those still missing have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. - Bernama
