Pahang MMEA detains fishing vessel, 21 foreign crew members

KUANTAN: A local fishing vessel and 21 foreign crew members were detained on suspicion of violating the terms of their licence under Ops Makmur and Ops Tiris about 7.5 nautical miles northwest of Pulau Tioman on Thursday (May 22). Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) of Pahang director First Admiral (Maritime) Mazlan Mat Rejab said the class C2 vessel and all the foreign crew members, including the tekong, aged from 20 to 57, were detained by a patrol ship at about 9.40 am. 'Upon inspection, the vessel is believed to have violated the terms of its licence by hiring foreign workers with valid work permits, while the crew members were found to possess questionable identification documents," he said in a statement on Saturday (May 24). He said they also seized the fishing equipment, relevant documents and their catch, which weighed an estimated seven tonnes. He added that the vessel and crew members were taken to the Teluk Gading Maritime Post Jetty in Rompin, and the case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 and Immigration Act 1959/63. – Bernama

Two foreign fishermen on local boat detained off Kuantan

KUANTAN: Two foreign fishermen were detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for failing to produce valid documents while onboard a fishing vessel about 2.5 nautical miles off Tanjung Tembeling near here yesterday. The duo, a Myanmar and a Cambodian national, did not have valid temporary employment visit passes or work permits, and were allegedly carrying fake passports. Pahang MMEA director First Admiral Mazlan Mat Rejab said the agency's patrol boat, which was conducting 'Op Makmur' and 'Op Tiris' operations, spotted the locally registered trawler anchored at sea at about 11.40am. "Upon inspecting the boat, we found six men, including two foreigners, aged between 31 and 66, onboard. The ship was captained by a local man. "Both the foreigners failed to provide any documents when requested by the MMEA enforcement team. "The vessel and crew were detained for committing offences under the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Immigration Act 1959/1963," he said in a statement today. Mazlan said the trawler, fishing equipment and catch weighing some 13 tonnes were taken to the Kuantan jetty for further investigations. He advised the maritime community, especially vessel owners, to always comply with all the conditions and regulations stipulated in their respective boat licenses. Mazlan urged members of the public with information on illegal activities at sea or emergencies to contact the Malaysia Emergency Response Services (MERS 999) or Pahang Maritime Operating Centre at 09-571 7345.
