Man (70s) dies following assault at a house in Waterford as man charged
A man, aged in his 70s, has died following a serious assault at a house in Waterford city on Friday.
The man was discovered with injuries and in an unresponsive condition in St Catherine's Grange, shortly after 2pm on Friday.
He was transported to University Hospital Waterford for treatment and was pronounced dead on Sunday.
A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene during the incident and subsequently detained at a Garda station within the Waterford-Kilkenny Division under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
He was later charged in relation to the investigation and appeared before Waterford District Court yesterday.
The local Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified and a post-mortem examination will be carried out.
A technical and forensic examination at the scene has been completed.
A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) is leading the investigation and a Family Liaison Officer (FLO) is providing support to the deceased's family.
An incident room has been established at Waterford Garda Station.
Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.

Garda car 'deliberately' hit by Northern registered Audi in 'serious incident'
An investigation is underway after a motorist 'deliberately' drove into a Garda car in Louth, causing damage to the vehicle. At around 8:30pm on Saturday, August 3, members of the Louth Roads Policing unit were on patrol as part of the Garda Bank Holiday weekend road safety operation when they were involved in a serious incident. Gardaí have been conducting a dedicated road traffic enforcement operation throughout the August Bank Holiday weekend which commenced at 7am on Thursday, July 31 and will continue until 7am Wednesday, August 6. While patrolling the Ravendale area, north of Dundalk, Gardaí observed a grey Northern Ireland registered Audi A4 acting suspiciously. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver deliberately drove into and caused damage to the Roads Policing patrol car showing a reckless disregard for Garda safety. Gardaí say they are 'working closely' with colleagues in the PSNI to identify those responsible as they appeal for witnesses. Funeral details announced for man who died two days after incident at his home
The funeral details of a man who died two days after an incident at his home in Waterford have been announced. Pat Fitzgerald, who was in his 70s and a former chairman of the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union (ATGWU), was found with injuries and unresponsive at his home in St Catherine's Grange on Friday, August 1. He was brought to University Hospital Waterford but passed away on Sunday, August 3, two days after the incident. Mr Fitzgerald was a former chairman of the ATGWU and had been employed for many years at Waterford Crystal, his death notice on stated. Mr Fitzgerald is predeceased by his wife Kathleen (nee Flynn), his father Jack, brother Mark and nephew Luke. 'Much loved father of Wayne, Joanne and Karl. Will be sadly missed by his mother Maura, brothers Nicky and John, sisters Joan, Margie, Brenda, Helen, Ann and June, grandchildren Mia, Ruben, Sofia and Adam, son-in-law Mick, daughter-in-law Barbara, his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and friends," his death notice continued. He will lie in repose at Tom Hennessy's Funeral Home, 45A Johnstown, Waterford on Thursday, August 7 from 5.30pm to 7pm. Mr Fitzgerald's funeral will walk from Ballytruckle Green at 11.40am on Friday, August 8 to the Sacred Heart Church, The Folly, Waterford for Requiem Mass on arrival at 12 noon followed by burial afterwards in St Mary's Cemetery, Ballygunner, Waterford. Mr Fitzgerald's funeral announcement comes after David Norris, 35, appeared before a special sitting of Waterford District Court on Sunday, August 3 on a charge of assaulting Mr Fitzgerald causing him harm. Norris, of Assumption Terrace, Rosbercon, New Ross in Wexford, appeared before Judge Miriam Walsh. Garda Donal Donohue of Waterford Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. Norris is charged with assaulting Mr Fitzgerald causing him harm at St Catherine's Grange, Waterford City on Friday, August 1. That offence is contrary to Section 3 (1) and 3(2) of the Non-Fatal Offences against the Person Act 1997 (as amended by Section 20 of the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions Act 2023). The young man's dad passed away a few years ago FINAL GOODBYE '19 years of happy memories' -Heartbroken mum pays tribute to 'beautiful' son, 19, killed in Dublin collision THE mother of a teenage cyclist who died in hospital following a collision has paid a heartbreaking tribute to the "beautiful" boy. The incident, which involved a car and a bicycle, happened on the R113, Fonthill Road South in Clondalkin shortly after 11:40pm on Sunday, July 27. The cyclist, a 19-year-old man, was raced to Beaumont Hospital in a critical condition. Gardai confirmed this morning that he was pronounced dead at the hospital yesterday August 4. The coroner has been notified and post-mortem examination will be carried out. The deceased has been named locally as Luke Bryne, 19, from Clondalkin. Tragically Luke's dad Shane passed away a number of years ago. In a heartbreaking post on social media his mother Martina McGarry wrote: "My beautiful son you're in peace now. "You put one of the hardest fights you gave me in 19 years of happy memories that I'll cherish forever. "You'll never be forgotten. You will always be in my heart. "I know you will be in heaven looking down on me. You're back home with you dad now gone but never forgotten. "Love you so much son. Sleep tight." 'WILL FOREVER BE MISSED' A family friend also wrote: "Beautiful boy will forever be missed such a gentleman he was. You were the best mother he could of asked for, you gave him the world rest in peace Luke. "Thinking of you and all your family at this heartbreaking time'." Gardai have renewed this appeal for witnesses to the crash to come forward. A Garda spokesperson said: "Road users who may have relevant camera footage (including dash-cam) and were traveling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí. "Anyone with information is asked to contact Clondalkin Garda Station at 01 666 7600, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station." Luke is the 98th person to died on Irish roads this year, nine of whom have been cyclists. No funeral arrangements have been made as yet.
